Our pottery unit brought us to Water Works where we worked with Brent Smith to make some pottery pieces. We started with a tutorial on how everything works and how to use certain tools we needed like the spin wheel and the wire to cut it. He also showed us a few tips he had learned from doing pottery for so long, in the end, I made a functional bowl and learned some professional tips on how to continue expanding my skills in pottery.
After working with the clay for a few days and picking up on the techniques and tactics taught to us I can confidently say I could do it better next time. I had a hard time with this subject because of my less-than-gentle touch and lack of experience in this specific art material which was more hands-on than I had experience with. The experience opened my eyes to a new medium of art I hadn't tried before and the experience was very humbling and extraordinarily eye-opening.
In the class, we worked for two weeks on any piece we wanted as long as it was made out of clay and made by ourselves. We worked diligently for those two weeks and I spent a lot of time at the spinning platform but finally got a perfect shape. After they were fired in a kiln and glazed the final product was displayed.
After spinning the clay for half an hour using, all the water in the bucket, and changing the shape of the bowl multiple times I had finished my bowl. After waiting for it to be fired and glazed for a few months I got it back and it was gorgeous.
I made a small bowl in hopes I could use it as a big coffee cup, I was aiming for a practical use object when I started the project. It was glazed in the color of my choosing and then fired in a kiln to get the final color and texture.
Sculpting clay required lots of motivation and problem-solving abilities. I was attempting to make a bowl that I could use but faced problems because I had to try again and again to get the right shape and texture of the clay. It was a very back-and-forth issue that you had to deal with when making clay sculptures and being able to think quickly on your feet and learning from failure was something you had to have mastered.
