Through my Art Immersion class, I developed multiple forms of creative expression as I learned alongside an array of professionals in the community. This page shows how I developed new, artistic ideas as well as interpreted, presented, and shared artistic work. This page also illustrates my understanding of how the arts convey meaning and my ability to connect artistic work with personal meaning and external context.
Pottery Unit
The class was welcomed by Brent Smith from Waterworks to learn about pottery. I got an understanding on how pottery is made and all the aspects there are to creating pottery.
At first, Mr. Smith talked to us about the aspect of pottery and some history about it. Then, we were given a block of clay and had to mold the clay before we put it on the wheel. After molding our clay, Mr. Smith let us use the wheels to start on our design. The beginning of my bowl design was extremely frustrating due to the fact that I wasn't so experienced.
At first, I had to mold the clay to form it into a specific object I wanted.
After molding my clay, I moved to the wheel and was extremely frustrated.
After a little motivation, I tried again and completed this final product!
As Brent Smith taught us, I realized that you need characteristics like patience when your clay breaks, communication when you're struggling, and understanding to know what you are doing. Brent Smith explained what we had to do step by step from the beginning by making a foundation and then shaping it into what we would like to create. I completed the unit by creating a bowl. Throughout the process, I was extremely impatient and frustrated multiple times and learned to become more patient with myself. Making pottery not only taught me the technical skills of working with clay but also showed me the importance of perseverance in the face of challenges, the value of clear communication in seeking help, and the appreciation for mistakes to learn from them.
Costume Design
We were excited to meet Bradley Moore from Piedmont players to learn about costume design. I got an understanding on how a costume is made and all the aspects there are to costume design.
At first, Bradley Moore told us the importance of costume design and everything that had to do with it!
After getting an understanding, we started our own costume design on a play named Dragon Trouble that we read together!
This was my final design for Magician #2 in Dragon Trouble!
As Bradley Moore taught us the main ideas of costume designing, I had an understanding of what type of characteristics you need to become a costume designer. Costume designing comes with a lot of different responsibilities such as communication with the director, patience with your drafts, and most importantly understanding the character that you are designing for. My personal experience was extremely frustrating due to the fact I couldn't imagine a costume in my head and took me a while to create a costume for a magician.
Prop Design
We were challenged to create props for the Salisbury Academy Winnie the Pooh play. I learned to work together with the group I was assigned to create thistles and acorns.
My group and I shared ideas on how we will make thistles and acorns.
After some communication and dedication, we completed the acorns and thistles!
My group and I finished a little early and decided to help with the frosting of cupcake props!
This art project was challenging because my group and I had to be organized, and positive, and had to communicate with each other to get our props complete. We also needed to have simple skills such as using a hot glue gun to assist us in creating the props. Overall, it was extremely important to understand the meaning of group work throughout this project.
My resilience was tested during these processes as I had to work diligently to create my foundation for pottery, think of a color scheme for costume design, and work together to complete props for a play. I understood that increasing my practice in simple characteristics like patience, care, and consideration would increase my lifelong skills.
