I took a class entitled Community Immersion. Through that class, I had the opportunity to meet with and learn from professionals across the community in the for-profit, non-profit, and government sectors. This page includes my learning and reflections on some of the presenters I found most significant.
I had the opportunity to tour the Food Lion warehouse. As Mickey McGinnis toured us around the warehouse, I began to understand how complex the inner workings of such a large company really can be. For example, there was an entire department solely responsible for bananas and is known as "The Banana Room". Mr. McGinnis shared different ways that people with many different needs can access the products provided by Food Lion.
Candace McKnight and Johnathan Prater visited our community class at Salisbury Academy Upper School to explain the connection between her independent company and Food Lion. Mrs. McKnight and Mr. Prater also explained the supply chain and how it works throughout different companies.
After hearing from Jonathan Prater, Candace McKnight, and Mickey McGinnis, I gained a deeper understanding of Food Lion’s community relationships. The journey of their products from manufacturing to local stores shows the strong connections between the stakeholders. The regulatory process by the local government greatly affects Food Lion’s operations and plays a crucial role in sustaining the business ecosystem.
Rowan Helping Ministries is a big team that helps people in our community who are having hardships. Rowan Helping Ministries is a puzzle where each piece is important and fits together to make the whole picture.
Rowan Helping Ministries is a huge supportive system for our community. They work with lots of different groups, like schools, churches, and volunteers, to make sure everyone has what they need to thrive. They show us the connection on how citizens come together, they can make a real difference in making our community stronger and happier.
During my visit to Rowan Helping Ministries, I had the privilege of being guided by Kyna Grubb, who showed the detailed operations within the nonprofit organization. As Kyna led us through the building, I gained an understanding of the varied nature of serving the community non-profit. Kyna shared stories expressing how people from diverse backgrounds could access the vital resources provided by Rowan Helping Ministries, to support those in need.
I had the opportunity to tour the Rowan County Chamber of Commerce at the Gateway Building. On the upper floor of the Gateway building, I learned that the EDC promotes economic growth and prosperity within a specific region. They attract new businesses, help existing ones expand, and facilitate job creation. Additionally, the Tourism Bureau showcases Salisbury's rich history, vibrant culture, and natural beauty to attract tourists and boost the local economy.
