Blogging
Level 2
Level 2
It's hard to keep up with 100's of blogs from day-to-day amidst our busy schedules as educators. This quest will share tools that will make the Internet do that work for you, bringing the resource...
Hopefully, in the previous quest you found fellow educators who are sharing ideas, resources, tips, and tricks. Perhaps you found many! There are so many resources out there, that it's often challenging to keep up with them all. Visiting 100's of sites each day to check for updates isn't exactly practical is it? Wouldn't it be nice if there were tools that would do all the work for you?
In the mid- to late-90's a new Internet technology emerged which eventually became known as RSS, short for Really Simple Syndication. Technical explanations aside, RSS allowed for easy communication between sites like blogs and between them and tools that gathered basic information from them.
Today, most news-oriented sites and blogs publish their resources as an RSS feed in addition to their traditional web content, and there are a variety of tools and services that can go out and gather this information for you and bring it to a central location. This gives you the luxury of having a single tool or site to visit to see the latest content from all of your favorite sites!
Other Options
Feedly's not the only option! Apps like Flipboard, Zite, and Pulse provide beautiful, magazine-like options for tablets like the iPad.
And don't forget tools like Pocket! Pocket's an app, formerly known as Read-It-Later, that allows you to save great resources from your favorite blogs in their entirety to your Pocket account.
You can learn more about all of these tools in this article: The 10 Best News Aggregators for Those on The Go!
Feedly is a news aggregator. It's a tool that lets you subscribe to the content of multiple sites and brings all of the latest news from them to you, formatting it into an easy-to-read format on a single screen.
There are multiple versions of it, too. If you use Chrome web browser, you can add it as an app from the Chrome Web Store. Sign-up/Sign-in using your Gmail account and then begin building your own, personalized Feedly page.
When prompted to add content, you can search content already curated by the Feedly team or you can add the URLs (web addresses) of the blogs and resources you want. Remember those great blog resources from the previous quest? Add them! Go find some new ones to add to the mix, too! As you add content, you can place it into "collections." Perhaps you have those science teaching resources in one collection while keeping your favorite food blogs in a separate collection.
As the authors of the various sites you subscribe to add content, you'll see new resources in your Feedly page!
There's also an iOS version and an Android version so you can take your favorite bloggers with you!
