Blogging

Level 4
It's time to stake your claim, online and establish your own blog!
It's time to create your own blog and share your expertise, resources, and ideas with the world. Now, you may be thinking to yourself, "What will I share? Who'd want to read it?" Don't worry, everyone thinks that when they start. And, frankly, sometimes you'll simply do it for yourself. The opportunity to write and reflect are critical for professional growth. Likewise, you may find that your blog becomes your own best resource as you gather your favorite resources in one place. You may consider writing for an audience or simply writing for yourself.
Choosing A Platform
There are lots of tools to help you get started with blogging. You may want to explore a few before settling on one. Here are a few to get you started:
Blogger.com - owned by Google and connected your GMail account, this is an easy-to-use platform to get you started.
Edublogs.org - specifically marketed to teachers, the free version is somewhat limited, but easy-to-use.
WordPress.com - hosts WordPress blogs with both free and paid options. If you already have your own website, the WordPress platform is free to download and install.
Customize Your Blog
One of the great things about a blog is that it can become your home on the web. So, make it your own! Most of the tools listed above have a variety of theme and customization options. Find what works for you!
Write and Share!
Once you've created your blog, it's time to add a post! What you write is up to you. If you're suffering from writer's block, here are some ideas to get you started:
Share a teaching strategy that you've used, either one you've borrowed from somewhere else or one you've designed yourself, that resulted in a high level of student engagement. Share how you did it.
Share about a time when you failed spectacularly in a lesson. What led to the failure? What did you learn from it?
Share a digital tool or set of tools that you've used with your learners that was really effective. Share tips for a reader that will tell them how to get started with the tool. Be sure to include links.
Respond to another blog post (with a link to the original) sharing your own thoughts and views on the topic.
Those are just some starters. Again, this is about you. Choose something that's relevant to you and your professional practice.
Tips:
Here are some additional tips and guidelines for blogging teachers:
Avoid discussing anything specific regarding your students. In other words, don't mention students by name.
Avoid excessive negativity.
Be professional!
As educators, it's more important that we advocate for our profession more than ever. By connecting, sharing, and marketing the great things we do, we'll have a positive impact on our profession.
