The AP Principles of Computer Science course is a College Board approved AP course that explores computer science topics from a variety of perspectives.
Students will learn about the inner and outer workings of computers with emphasis on big-picture concepts looking at the past, present, and future of the industry. Every student will be expected to take the AP exam.
The syllabus and guidelines sheet gives a detailed look at what's expected for incoming and attending students.
Please read and become acclimated with this sheet as it will answer many of your questions and be referenced during individual discussions regarding behavior, expectations, and grades.
All students should show up to class prepared and ready to learn. Laptops will be provided, but students should always have their Chromebooks ready and charged. Phones will not be allowed in class.
It is expected that students keep up with assignments, be productive and efficient in their work, and pay attention to the requirements.
No student should fail this course. Each of the programs comes with video lectures, copious notes, guided practice exercises, and study quizzes. Class participation is required as class-time will be spent going over classwork.
Please be aware that all students taking AP classes at Rancho San Juan High School (and any school in the Salinas Union High School District for that matter) are required to take the AP exam at the end of the year. Fees are paid for by the district, but any student who does not take the test -- for any reason -- will be responsible for paying the fee for the missed test.
The fee is $40.
If a student opts to take a late test or would like to test for a class they did not take, they may pay $98.
I encourage all students to consider taking an AP class and doing well on their tests as many colleges/universities offer college credit for completed courses with test grades of 3 or better.
This letter will go out to students and parents in August.
Parents: Please fill this out and have your student return it.
