What does the i-Ready Window mean? Do students have to finish the Diagnostic within the window?

Short answer:

Students have 21 days from the date they begin the Diagnostic to finish it. If they started the Diagnostic on the last day of the window or even after the window closed, they still have 21 days to complete it. The window does not cut them off or turn it off. So, if you reassign the Diagnostic they have 21 days to complete it.

Longer answer with added info:

The window is a time-frame for gathering data. If a student takes the Diagnostic outside of the window, when you go to look at the data for the Diagnostic for all students, you’ll need to change the time frame from “D1 ELA” (or D1 Math) to “Most Recent.” This will collect all of the scores from the most recent Diagnostic, not just those that happened during the window. See screen shot below. Use the drop down to change D1 ELA 2^nd-8th to Most Recent.
