In the Media Elective, students explore how media languages, technologies and processes are used to create meaning, tell stories and influence audiences across a range of media forms, including print, audio, screen-based and hybrid media artworks. Students analyse and evaluate media artworks from diverse cultures, times and contexts, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, to examine how representations, values and viewpoints are constructed and interpreted.
Students experiment with ideas and stories by manipulating technical and symbolic elements, genre conventions and media codes to communicate meaning and engage audiences. They explore how media artworks reflect and challenge social beliefs, cultural perspectives and institutional values, while considering ethical, regulatory and community contexts.
Through the media production process, students develop and refine skills in planning, producing and distributing media artworks for different purposes and audiences. Working both independently and collaboratively, students use traditional and emerging technologies to create representations through still and moving images, sound, text and interactive elements. They apply creative and critical thinking to shape meaning, style and audience engagement, while reflecting on and evaluating their own and others’ media arts practices.
Representations in Media - analysing and evaluating how technical and symbolic elements are manipulated in media artworks to challenge representations framed by social beliefs and values in different community and institutional contexts.
Film Analysis (Film-focused case study) - analysing and evaluating how media codes and conventions are utilised in media artworks to symbolise elements to convey meaning in a variety of contexts.
Narrative, Style & Genre - exploring, analysing and experimenting with ideas and stories that manipulate media elements, and genre conventions to construct new and alternative viewpoints in images, sounds and text.
Media Production Process (students undergo the Production Process to produce and direct their own media product) - developing and refining media production skills to integrate and shape the technical and symbolic elements in images, sounds and text to represent a story, purpose, meaning and style. This also includes planning, producing and distributing media artworks for a range of community, institutional contexts and different audiences, and considering social, ethical and regulatory issues.
