Subject Overview:
The elective will operate as an additional Mathematics subject. Students will continue to attend their regular Year 9 or Year 10 Mathematics class. This course is designed purely as extension and enrichment.
A/B Structure
To ensure sustainability and enable students to complete the elective in consecutive years without repetition, the course will operate on a two-year rotating sequence:
Extension Maths A (Semester 1)
Extension Maths B (Semester 2)
Students may join in either Semester and complete one or both, depending on interest and timetable availability.
Class Composition
Mixed Year 9 and Year 10 class
Approximately two-thirds of instructional time dedicated to explicit teaching of high-level content and problem-solving strategies
Approximately one-third dedicated to rich tasks, modelling projects, competitions, and extended investigations
The elective will draw on the following conceptual areas:
Curriculum Extension Content
Advanced topics from the Year 9 Extension and Year 10A Mathematics curricula
Conceptual development emphasising algebraic manipulation, functions, non-linear relationships, proof, trigonometry, and introductory calculus concepts
High-level reasoning tasks aligned with national and international extension benchmarks
VCE Preparation
Content that strengthens assumed knowledge for:
VCE Mathematical Methods (functions, algebraic techniques, set theory, problem solving, nonlinear modelling)
VCE Specialist Mathematics (vectors, logic, proof, deeper algebraic reasoning)
VCE General Mathematics (linear modelling, financial maths, networks and matrices)
Senior Science readiness (rate of change, proportional reasoning, literal equations, vectors, trigonometry and linear modelling used in Physics/Chemistry)
Problem-Solving and Enrichment
Complex NAPLAN and GAT problems, focusing on the items rarely completed by >10% of the state
Mathematical competition problems (e.g., AMC, CAT, ICAS, problem-solving olympiads)
Investigative and modelling tasks inspired by Y11 Mathematical Methods coursework
Rich tasks requiring reasoning, strategic thinking, and mathematical communication
SUBJECT PATHWAYS
VCE Maths Methods
VCE Specialist Maths
VCE Physics
CAREER PATHWAYS
Careers that use mathematics are pure and applied Maths, research, science, engineering, computer science and programming, finance, business, actuary, insurance, architecture and teaching.
This elective prepares students for Maths Methods, which an important subject for competitive courses such as Medicine, Dentistry, Optometry, Veterinary science and Radiography
