Digital Exhibit

Part of our project entails a digital exhibit put together by some of the project team members alongside a Digital Humanities class at Saint Mary's College. The Digital Exhibit (hosted on a Scalar site) includes a completely digitized copy of a journal written by Cambodian refugees for the sisters who helped them in a camp in Thailand in 1979. The website is linked below for your perusing pleasure, as well as some of the main features of the exhibit.

introduction

The Digital Exhibit begins with an introduction to the digitized journal providing context to the Sisters' role in obtaining the journal, the role of one specific sister, Sr. Paula Goettelmann, historical context of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia, and the methodology our team applied in creating the exhibit.

Complete Edition

A complete edition of the Cambodian journal is included which pairs the edited and diplomatic transcriptions of each entry along with an accompanying digitized image of the entry.

Edited Transcriptions

Our team took the liberty to lightly edit the syntax and word choice of each journal entry (which are originally written in English by the Cambodian author) to improve reader comprehension. Each edited entry is paired with an original piece of artwork.

Diplomatic Transcriptions

In an effort to retain the refugees' authentic voices while improving readability, the site includes typed out diplomatic transcriptions of the journal entries. Authors of the entries are kept anonymous to protect their privacy.

Digital Images

Visitors of the digital exhibit can flip through the original digitized journal separate from our teams' edited and diplomatic transcriptions.

Appendix

Our digital exhibit closes with an appendix which includes acknowledgements, statements from the students who were a part of the project, and artist statements from the artists who contributed their original artwork.
