Can you think beyond - 'I'm just gonna make a thing' ?
Students must engage in at least one project per trimester in Stage 2 that has a social/community cause that is close to them.
Project must be in support of or raise awareness of the social cause.
The scope of this project is flexible. It could be a smaller side project, or one of your major projects.
The key aims of this project are:
researching your cause and the media you're producing
engaging with concepts beyond audio and ideally engaging with our community outside of SAE
Social Causes could include:
Disability/Mental Health
Race
Gender/Sexuality
Multicultural
Socio-Economic impacts
Charities/NFP
Religion
Politics/Activism
Discrimination
Environment/Climate Change
Substance Abuse/Addiction
and many others....
It can also be a celebration of these topics. It can focus on positive or negative.
Research:
As with any project, you should be be aware of the nuances of both the subject areas you're engaging with and the expectations of the media object.
For example, if you were working on project discussing any of the above mentioned causes, you would need to have a fundamental understanding of the key issues within the cause and seek feedback from people involved/affected. You would need to ensure your product was being communicated with care and delivering the intended meaning appropriately.
Additionally, you would want to ensure you have an understanding of the relationship between the media object you plan to create and it's relationship to the cause.
Examples:
You are planning to produce an interactive game experience talking about domestic violence:
Would this be an appropriate media format for reaching your target audience?
Could elements of this create a triggering experience for some players?
What would you need to do to ensure an appropriate experience for all players?
You want to create a collection of protest songs along with some visuals to talk about climate change:
Would this be an appropriate media format for reaching your target audience?
Are there genres that historically are linked to protest songs?
Are you following the expectations of protest music genres, or breaking the norms?
What is your justification for your choices based on the media, the themes and the target audience?
As with any new project concept, you will surely have clarification questions. Please discuss your ideas with your facilitator to ensure project approval before you commence.

Wanna work on a games project?
Think: How can you link it to a socially conscious cause?

The project must:
Use some form of interdisciplinary collaboration
Be delivered in a 'release ready' state for exhibition
Be accompanied by a Synopsis document for exhibition. This should include a summary of the project, credits for all contributors, and should be presented as an A4 document which can be printed to sit alongside your project (Canva suggested as it should be aesthetically pleasing)
Be approved by your facilitator
Be supported by scholarly study and research - both into the technical processes and the cause.
All other project requirements are dependant on the project you choose to attach this to.
This is why approval from the facilitator is required.
These will be relevant to the type of project being completed.
