Guidance

PSAT Information

The PSAT will be administered this year on Wednesday, October 12th, 2022. Homestead Sophomores and Juniors are required to take the PSAT and will remain on campus on October 12th per usual and report to their Advisory teacher's classroom, which can be found on Powerschool. Seniors will not be attending classes and are expected to participate in post-secondary-related activities and will be required to submit proof of their participation on that day (ex. college visits, job shadows, admissions interviews, scholarship applications, etc.) Freshmen will also be off-campus working in the assigned modules in their Class of 2026 Canvas Page and will not be expected to complete coursework for their traditional classes that day.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PSAT/NMSQT TEST FOR SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS

The PSAT is an important indicator of College and Career Readiness. Sophomores and Juniors interested in taking Homestead courses that provide students with the opportunity to earn free college credit should remember that the scores they earn on this exam are used to qualify them for all of our free Dual Credit courses. Dual Credit Prerequisites and Qualifiers Juniors who do well on this exam may also be eligible for the National Merit Scholarship Program, and other programs that use PSAT/NMSQT scores.

PSAT Exam Prep

The PSAT test will provide students, parents, and school counselors with an earlier and better gauge of post-secondary preparation. After the test, students get free access to My College QuickStart. Some features of My College QuickStart include an interactive score report (allowing students to address areas of weakness before sitting for the actual SAT), a personality test, major and career suggestions, and a starter list of colleges. AP Potential may also be used after the test to identify students who demonstrate potential for Advanced Placement Courses. Please encourage your students to do their best on this test. The following links are great resources to help your students to prepare for the exam, and they are FREE!

PSAT Day for Seniors

Wednesday, October 12th is a day designated for seniors to participate in postsecondary opportunities. While freshmen are completing a college and career assignment and sophomores and juniors are testing on this day, seniors will be afforded the opportunity to gain information regarding their postsecondary aspirations.

Seniors will not report to school for this activity. Students will be coded as CV (College/Career Visit) for the day. Please note: October 12th is not considered as one of the three postsecondary visit days allowed for seniors.

Please select one of these three options to participate in on October 12th.

Job Shadow - Students can spend the day going to work with someone in a career they are interested in learning more about. The day may also be split between two occupations. Companies typically require advance notice to approve having someone shadow their employees, so start making those arrangements as soon as possible.

Postsecondary Visits - Use this opportunity to visit, either virtually or in-person, places being considered for receiving post-secondary training, certifications, or degrees. This includes any location where students would be able to receive valuable information and guidance concerning post-secondary aspirations, such as visiting businesses to learn about potential apprenticeships, traveling to a base or recruiting center to learn about enlisting in the military, traveling to a college campus to learn more about degree programs and scholarship opportunities, etc. Parents are encouraged to participate in these activities with their students. Students and their parents who wish to visit a location in person are reminded that they must make an appointment in advance, so that the facility they will be visiting is prepared to provide information and answer your questions. Please call as soon as possible to make those arrangements. Use the institution’s website to locate contact information and schedule an appointment. Students and parents may also explore post-secondary opportunities virtually, visiting websites and learning more about the career and college options they are considering.

Other Educational Activities - Seniors may also use this day to complete other post-secondary activities, such as writing college essays, completing Box 2 Reflections in Canvas, working on and completing college applications, and applying for scholarships. Select this option if you have made your post-secondary plans and can use the time to work toward those goals.

JUNIORS: Important SAT Graduation Exam Information

On Thursday, March 2, 2023, Homestead High School will be administering the SAT in person to our grade 11 students. Because the SAT has replaced the ISTEP+ as a graduation qualifying exam, it will be given at no cost to students. All students in the Class of 2023 are required by the state of Indiana to test in person on Thursday, March 2. It is important to note that students CANNOT use an SAT exam score that they have taken in the past or will take in the future in place of the March 2nd administration. The school test, unlike the Saturday exams, is a digital exam that has been specifically designed for the Indiana graduation requirement. This is why ALL Juniors must be present for this exam.

The SAT exam will focus on reading, writing, and math skills. Additional information about SAT content can be found on the College Board SAT webpage. Because this is such an important exam, Homestead encourages all Juniors to practice for the SAT for free by using the Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy. This free resource has video lessons and full-length practice tests. In order to access these personalized practice tests, students can find their unique PSAT Code in the left-side toolbar in PowerSchool. This access code will allow Khan Academy to personalize the practice activities based on your PSAT results. Schoolhouse.world from Khan Academy is also offering two free online tutoring bootcamps in November and December for students taking the spring SAT. Registration for the November bootcamp closes on Thursday, October 6. Contact College Board or IDOE’s Office of Student Assessment with questions.

This is a tremendous opportunity for all of our students as the SAT is a standardized college entrance exam accepted by every college in the U.S. and over 600 institutions internationally and is used as one component of the admissions process. The SAT connects you to scholarship opportunities as well and can also be used to qualify for free college classes offered during your senior year.

Financial Aid

State Financial Aid

The Commission for Higher Education is dedicated to making college affordable through need-based financial aid awards and to allow choice by granting awards to those attending public, independent, and proprietary colleges.

Award notices contain information about a student's eligibility for Indiana student's Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the approved tuition and regularly assessed fees at the college the student will be attending, the type of high school diploma the student earned, and the number of credit hours the student has successfully completed.

Indiana ranks fifth in the nation in the need-based grant aid per undergraduate full-time equivalent enrollment, making higher education more accessible and attainable for more Hoosiers. Indiana has two primary grant programs: The Frank O'Bannon Grant, Indiana's primary need-based financial aid program, and the 21st Century Scholarship, Indiana's early promise program where students sign up in middle school.

Please visit the Indiana Commission for Higher Education website at https://www.in.gov/che/ for more information about Indiana's grant programs.

Diploma Type Verification

Scholartrack is used to facilitate the reporting of eligible Academic or Technical Honors graduates to the Commission. Graduates not reported through ScholarTrack may not receive the full financial aid award for which they are eligible. To report this information in ScholarTrack you need to create your own account. If you have not already created your own ScholarTrack Account, please visit https://scholartrack.che.in.gov/Login?ReturnUrl=%2f#/RegistrationAccountType

FAFSA

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is available for the Class of 2023. The FAFSA must be completed by April 15th to qualify for Indiana state aid, but it is recommended to file as soon as possible. Many schools have deadlines as early as January 1, and some types of aid are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. You will need:

Requesting Letters of Recommendation

As we enter the season of college applications and scholarships, remember that many of these applications will require letters of recommendation from school personnel. Make sure you give some time and consideration to those you choose to write your letters of recommendation. Please consider the following when requesting a letter of recommendation:

  1. Ask someone who knows you well

  2. Ask early and provide appropriate time to construct a well-written letter (at least two weeks)

  3. Ask before assigning them as a recommender

  4. Ask in person

  5. Provide your resume or counselor information sheet (see attached) to the recommender

  6. Send a thank you letter

Students needing a letter of recommendation for a November 1st, 2021 deadline need to have requested and provided a recommendation sheet to the recommender by October 14, 2022.

College Application Information & FAQS

What does “Test Optional” Mean?

Colleges that are test optional de-emphasize the importance of the SAT and ACT by making the tests an unnecessary component of the admission process. So if you took the SAT or ACT but didn't score as highly as you'd hoped you would, you can apply to test-optional colleges in order to avoid having to send in any unsatisfactory test scores that could potentially hurt your application. https://blog.prepscholar.com/test-optional-colleges-list

Important information regarding college applications:

Students must allow counselors/teachers at least two weeks to complete applications and letters of recommendations. If your deadline is November 1st, all materials need to be provided to your counselor by October 14th. Recommendation sheet (purple sheet) for students to complete and provide to recommenders.

Here are instructions for sending your transcripts through Parchment, it is important you list Homestead High School (Fort Wayne, IN) as your school. Please make sure to enter your year of graduation correctly.

Although SAT and ACT scores are on your transcript, most colleges want them sent directly through College Board or ACT. Students have to make this request; counselors cannot request official scores to be sent.

If applying to colleges using the Common Application, make sure you have email addresses for your recommenders and counselor. You do NOT have to have your portion of the application completed in order to submit the application to your counselor. Common Application allows students and counselors to work simultaneously.

Although colleges might offer multiple ways to submit information and transcripts, you should only use one. Priority should be given to Common Application and Parchment.

Wednesday, October 12th is an opportunity for seniors to job shadow or visit a college. While sophomores and juniors are taking the PSAT on this day, seniors will be afforded the opportunity to gain information on a college or career.
