black history month

The month of February is Black History Month. Black History Month is made to honor and recognize the amazing contributions and abilities of African Americans. This month, students will spend time learning about important African Americans related to their class content. Here, some familiar Homestead alumni are featured that have made an impact on the community!

Ayanna Patterson

Ayanna Patterson is a sophomore at the University of Connecticut, aka UConn. She graduated from Homestead in 2022 after being named Miss Basketball for Indiana and being a McDonald’s All-American. She was also a Jersey Mikes National Player of the Year Finalist. She was the Outside the Huddle national girls basketball player of the year. She also was on the USA U18 3v3 girls basketball team in 2021. She is now a member of the UConn women’s basketball team. Though she just had left knee surgery, Ayanna is working hard on and off the court so she can represent the Huskies next winter.

Keegan Ferrell

Keegan Ferrell was a participant on The Voice for season 20. Looking back on his time at Homestead, he is very grateful for the encouragement he felt to pursue his career in music. He remembers a time when Dr. Ginder specifically called him out in the hallway to ask about upcoming gigs which meant a lot to him to be truly known with such a big student body. He loved that Homestead had so many opportunities for him to perform, such as the Variety Show, NHS Coffee House, and Poem in Your Pocket Day.

Academically, Keegan felt well prepared. He says the "work ethic and tireless effort that was instilled at Homestead carried over to the next level." Keegan remembers many teachers who were important along his path, specifically naming Señor Peeper and Mrs. Merkling. They both had a way of encouraging him and the students around him to maximize their potential. He says, "Their passion and love for students is palpable when you step into their classrooms, and they were both teachers that I knew I could go to with anything and they would have my back."

Keegan had a remarkable experience on The Voice, getting to work with Blake Shelton and Nick Jonas. During the show, he lived in a hotel with the other 40 contestants for 2-3 months. He gained lifelong friends from the experience and has now produced music for over 30 Voice contestants. This was a wonderful launch to his career in Nashville, and now he works as a full-time music producer and audio engineer.

amber austin

Amber Austin graduated from Homestead in 2021. Currently she is a 3rd year Biology, Health minor on the Pre-med track. She attends Hampton University. Over the summer she was selected to be part of the POWERED Plus internship program. For her internship, she participated in wet-lab research experience, job shadowing, tumor boards, grand rounds, morbidity and mortality meetings, educational seminars, and tours of medical centers. She was able to speak with many physicians and build connections within the medical community. In the grand rounds, she was able to discuss how public health crises are addressed locally and globally. After this time spent at the Dartmouth Cancer Center, she plans on taking her research back to Hampton in hopes she will return to the Gerber-Kettenbach Lab for another year of the POWERED Plus internship program in the summer.

onye ezeakudo

Onye Ezeakudo graduated from Homestead in 2018. He is notable for playing guard in his basketball career. After playing basketball at Homestead, he became a Pittsburgh Panther at the University of Pittsburgh. As an undergraduate, he majored in Biomedical Engineering. Then he was given the opportunity to graduate with his degree and leave basketball, or to continue to play for one more year. This is when he chose to be a part of one more season. To do so, Onye transferred to Radford University as a graduate student this year.

Samuel harness

Samuel Harness was on the 21st season of the Voice. As a middle schooler, he participated in a play, Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat, that changed his outlook on performing arts and his life as a whole. He received the lead role in the play but did not tell his friends or family. He left this detail as a surprise for them at the show. At 26, he auditioned for The Voice and was chosen by John Legend for his team. Ariana Grande and Blake Shelton also turned their chairs for Harness. He ended up choosing John Legend, and he claims the experience felt like a dream. One of his favorite moments of being on the show was working with Ed Sheeran. His biggest inspirations in music include Ed Sheeran, Lewis Capaldi, and Bruno Mars. He encourages anyone who wants to pursue a career in music to take a risk because you never know when your time will be.
