Additional Notes: Adding polynomials is just combining like terms. Recall that like terms have the same variable AND exponents. When combining, alwys follow your integer rules.
When combining, there are 2 ways to show your work. The first is the way you have been combining like terms for years: placing circles, squares, and triangles around like terms (being sure to include the sign in front of the term.) The second way is to line them up in columns.
By lining them up, it eliminates mistakes with signs.
You can set up the problem any way you like. Just be careful of which terms are like terms and which are not!

The reason we separate Addition and Subtraction is because Subtraction has 2 tricky parts to it:
Section 1: Subtracting polynomials is just like Adding, with one additional step: the Distributive Property. Subtraction of Polynomails is written in the form ( ) - ( ). It means ( ) -1( ), so we need to distribute the negative sign to EVERY term in the second parentheses. Then we can follow the addition rules from yesterday. again, it is your choice if you want to do columns or not, but understand, that method is how you will be doing math in high school, so if you didn't practice columns yesterday, I suggest you practice today. *The columns need to be set up AFTER you distribute the negative!
Section 2: Sometimes the problem is worded differently. Instead of being set up for you, they use words like "Subtract from." The order is VERY IMPORTANT in this situation. 3-6 is not the same as 6-3. If I say subtract 3 from 6, that means start with 6 and then subtract 3. It changes the order of the problem. Once you have the problem written in the correct order, distribute the negative and answer the problem.
