The only difference between today and Friday is that today we begin with a coefficient. It is attached to the radical symbol by multiplication. Since the coefficient is OUTSIDE the symbol, you do not take its square root. When you simplify the radicand inside and bring a number out, those two numbers will now multiply together, like in the example to the right.
3:42 - 5:02 for specific examples. If you watch from 6:40 to the end, you will see multiple simplifications in each problem.

The Pythagorean Theorem is a rule that applies to right triangles. The Legs are the sides that come together at the right angle. The Hypotenuse is the side across from the right angle, and is always the largest side.
To answer problems, it is helpful to determine C (the Hypotenuse) first. Then the other two sides, the legs go in place of A and B in no special order:

The only difference between today's lesson and yesterday's is that our answers will not be "pretty" today. The radicands are not perfect squares, and therefore must be expressed as a decimal (use your calculator) or simplified. The problem will tell you which way to express your answer. Refer back to the videos and work from yesterday on how to solve for the missing side.

Additional Notes.
We use the Pythagorean Theorem to find missing sides of right triangles because it only works in right triangles. The converse says means we are going in the opposite direction. We have all 3 sides but do not know if the triangle is a right triangle. To determine this, we plug the sides into the Pythagorean Theorem. It is works, it is a right triangle. It it doesn't then it is not a right triangle. Simple as that. Just remember that the longest side is always C. In the case of radicals, you may have to use the calculator first to find out which number is truly larger.

Additional Notes.
When solving Pythagorean Theorem word problems, you MUST sketch a picture. In many instances, just drawing a right triangle will not be any help. You need to put as much detail as possible into your picture. In the example to the right, someone is standing on a wall so a ladder is put in place to help them. Notice how the author started with the person on the wall (the Vertical side of the right triangle.) When the ladder is drawn, notice how it is leaning against the wall. All ladders lean!!! The 5 goes on the bottom because it says the ladder is 5 meters from the wall. Many times the problem will say the "base of the latter is 5 meters from the base of the wall." Base is always on the bottom.
This is still math class, not art class. Be sure there is enough detail in your picture to help you, but don't take 2 hours to draw 1 picture. Do your best to get the job done.
**Always remember to go back and read the problem. Many times there is another step like on the butterfly problem from the 11.5 HW. In that case, the problem asked for the entire wingspan, so you had to double your answer.
