Additional Notes: This is a VERY IMPORTANT lesson. You will be Double Distributing for the rest of your math career. Recall that when a number is attached to parentheses by multiplication, we apply the Distributive Property. In this case there are PARENTHESES attached to the parentheses, so we distribute BOTH terms in the first parentheses to BOTH terms in the other:

Distributive Property: 3x( x + 4) we distribute 3x to both terms: 3x(x) and 3x(+4) giving us an answer of 3x^2 + 12x
Distributive Property: 3x - 2( x + 4) Only the -2 is attached by multiplication. we distribute -2 to both terms: -2(x) and -2(+4) giving us 3x - 2x - 8. THen we combine like terms for a final answer of x - 8
Double Distributive: (3x - 2)( x + 4) Since parentheses are touching parentheses, we multiply both in first set to both in second set. See steps below:
(3x - 2)( x + 4) write out as 4 separate products: First multiply 3x to second set, then multiply -2 to second set

3x*x 3x*(+4) -2*x -2*(+4) then follow the multiplication rules for each of the 4 sections (don't forget + and - signs)

3x^2 +12x -2x -8 combine like terms (two middle terms) and write answer

3x^2 + 10x - 8
