Davis Bike Club's: GOLD RUSH RANDONNEE September 3 - 6, 2025
On Day 2, you will encounter gravel. The BIZZ JOHNSON Trail is a well known Rails to Trails trail starting in Susanville, CA. We'll be on 17.5 +/- miles of the Bizz. It's scenic, and easy gravel. You will pass through 2 tunnels (dark but short), but generally, the route is a gentle 3% grade with wide gravel surfaces. The trail should be dry and packed in September. The caution sign is a warning for crossing Highway 36. We will have a water drop at Devil's Corral and someone will be at the Goumaz CG to help point you in the direction of the pavement.
Tire choice: many people in 2022 rode the entire GRR on 28s, including the Bizz section. It was not difficult, BUT! Riding on 32s will make it more enjoyable.

We have two gravel permanents on Day's 2 & 3 for those who come up and volunteer, or for those who bail on the 1200k or 1000k. We worked with Yuba Expeditions, the locals who know ALL of the roads and trails in the area. These are both challenging routes through remote areas with no services are passers by, so please plan accordingly.
The unpaved portions of both routes consists of forest roads, mostly dirt, some gravel, and a few sections of chunky gravel where loggers have made repairs or crossed wet areas. Also, due to recent activity, there are a few areas of deep dust and a few areas of branches and/or debris on the roadway. All doable with the right frame of mind on 38’s but if you can fit larger it would be suggested. Both routes are more formidable than they look on paper.

Looping both East and West from Quincy, this gives you a good sampling of the local roads.
Quincy – Genesee – Perm #05641

65.6 mi , 33 mi unpaved , 6350 ft elevation gain
The bulk of the climbing on this ride, 14mi and 4k, comes just after a short warmup crossing the valley and the unpaved section comes in one big chunk in the first half of the route. At mile 37, older locals will recognize the next 18 miles as part of the DBC Antelope Lake 600. Use this section to recoup prior to the final 10 miles of pavement back into Quincy.
The Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship is an amazing resource in the area. The original idea was to mitigate the impact of riders around Downieville, and the best way to do that was to create more riding opportunities. The Connected Communities vision is to link the towns of the Lost Sierra by trail and dirt roads, bringing people together and by spreading the "dirt stoke". Read more about it here.
We'll be making a contribution to SBTS with some of the dollars from our event.
If you need a bike shop while in Quincy, stop in to Yuba Expeditions: 550 Crescent St. While they are a mountain bike shop, they know we're coming and can help you with your bike IF you BRING the gear you need.
