Sandakan is the gateway to viewing the best of Sabah's rich wildlife.
My name is Cynthia Au. I am a Licensed Guide and the Supervisor for KHT Tours in Sandakan.
Our team of experienced Mandarin and English speaking Guides and very knowledgeable Drivers would be delighted to show you the best of Borneo in the forests, on the rivers, the islands the seas and the beaches that surround Sandakan.
Our tours range from one half day to the five day premium wildlife adventures. We can also develop special tours, such as a birdwatchers delight, tailored to your specifications. Take some time to study our tours and pick one that is right for you. Contact me if you would like more information or a personalised tour.
Orang Utan, Sun Bears, Proboscis Monkey, the endangered Green and Hawksbill turtles, which lay their eggs all year-round, the mighty Kinabatangan River where elephants are often sighted and diverse birdlife in a protected rainforest, are just some of the adventures waiting for you.
Most can be seen on one or two day tours conducted by our experienced team of guides, though we recommend a minimum of three days and two nights for our Kinabatangan adventures and the five day tour that gives you time to experience the very best of Borneo.
Your base will be Sandakan, a delightful city with wonderful cuisine and much to offer adventurous, and sometimes weary, travelers. It is the second-largest city in Sabah, East Malaysia, and located on the north-eastern coast of Borneo. Sandakan was the former capital of British North Borneo from the years 1884-1946. Sandakan was one of the largest towns in Sabah in the early years with traders from Europe to Africa, from Arabia to China, from the Indies to Java and from local Dusun’s to the Japanese. After WWII the capital was transferred to Jesselton (now Kota Kinabalu). In the early years, Sandakan served as a major port for early settlers to Sabah, and most Chinese came through this port. With the many Chinese from Canton, Sandakan once earned the nick-name of "Little Hong Kong".
Sandakan is one of those places whose names have a magical ring, promising all kinds of exotic surprises. Sandakan not only has an intriguing past but is the gateway to the rich wildlife of Sabah. Within less than a couple of hours of the town lies an incredible variety of adventures, both on land and in the ocean, including a forest reserve where orangutan are helped to re-adjust to life in the wild; islands where endangered marine turtles come ashore to lay their eggs; limestone caves where a rare delicacy, birds' nests, have been gathered for centuries; an island paradise in the Sulu Sea offering exciting scuba diving and Malaysia's largest freshwater swamp forest or wetlands, along the Kinabatangan river, which is teeming with wildlife.
You surely will not be disappointed when you come to Sandakan, as Sandakan offers a great diversity in wildlife, flora and fauna, as well as a special culture and wonderful people.
