Starting the Women Empowerment and Equality Club in my junior year of high school inspired me to continue my research in what I am most passionate about: feminism!
Inspirational Topics of Discussion:
Title IX Legislation
Discrimination Prevention in schools
Sexual Assault/Harassment Prevention
Healthy Relationships/Boundary Setting
As I began to dive into potential research topics related to feminism, I became fascinated with primary source documents from different eras of the fight for women's rights. I explored documents such as the Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions from the Seneca Falls Convention. This helped me make the decision to conduct research based on the analysis of historical primary source documents.
“Equal Rights Amendment Overview Origins and Subsequent Actions in Congress and the States”
“Who Opposed the ERA? An Analysis of the Social Bases of Antifeminism”
“Politicians' Attitudes Toward the Equal Rights Amendment: A Study of the West Virginia and Virginia State Legislatures”
In my review of existing literature, these three articles became the most influential in my current research question and methodology.
Provided introductions to and historical context on the ERA
Different examples of methodology for analyzing what factors led to ratification
Demonstrated a gap in the existing body of literature on why Colorado voted to ratify
Based on the methods used by the above articles, the overall method for my research is the identification of multiple factors which may have a relationship with the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment in Colorado. The data sets will be determined and organized, and then a chi-squared goodness of fit test will be used to determine if, based on the data, the identified factor has a statistically significant relationship to ratification.
The final step on the road to approval was creating my "pitch" presentation for my advisor to approve. Watch the video to see the proposal of my research that has now been approved for me to start!
Stay tuned! :)
