At this time, I have started my study with the students in Ms. Marcilliat's health class. Brian and Michele came in to the school on January 19th and 21st and taught Brand and Flow to the students. The first day was focused on Flow. We put up posters around the room with the different states of flow. The students had to write on sticky notes how a specific state of flow affects themselves, how being in that state of flow impacted others, and what triggers that state of flow. They were put in groups and asked to share their responses. The students were very engaged in the task. They did well with working together to come up with ideas and they gave answers they were passionate about. They were then asked to present their responses to the class. This created some anxiety among the students. The first class was more hesitant to present. They were very quiet and reserved. The second class, however, was much more confident and willing to present. They projected well and seemed passionate about their answers.
The second day centered around Brand. On that day, the students worked on participation guides that Brian and Michele handed out. After a brief lesson, they were asked to write down their preferences, passions, and expertise. This helped them develop their brand. They were asked to share what their brand was to other students. They seemed to enjoy this part of the lecture. They found it interesting to talk about themselves, as well as learn new things about other people. Most students found it more useful to talk about their brand as opposed to writing it. Both classes were more responsive than the first day. They were more comfortable with Brian and Michele and had more fun with the second lecture. The lecture concluded with a short lesson and example of how to navigate flow. Brian and Michele gave the students a scenario and had them work through the states of flow to get to the correct state. The students were very engaged and the scenario helped them understand how to apply brand and flow together.
From this point on, the students will have roughly a month to apply brand and flow to there everyday day lives. This will test how effective and inspiring the lesson was. I am hoping these ideals will stick with at least some of the students. It is unrealistic to expect every student to remember to use brand and flow, but I can hope that a few will find it useful. To help keep brand and flow in the minds of the students, Brian wrote three key phrases on the board. These phrases are: I will focus on..., I am grateful for..., and I will let go of.... These phrases are a tool the students can use to make their day a bit easier. Keeping these phrases in mind can help the students appreciate their lives and keep them more focused on their goal. This is one of the key ideals of brand and flow, which is why it can help the students stay connected to it.
During the lecture, no changes had to be made. Everything Brian and Michele had in mind was carried out and went according to plan. Going off of the lesson of Brand and Flow that was taught to adults, some small changes had to be made that related more to teenagers and their lives at school as opposed to adults at work. Other than that, everything that Brand and Flow normally goes over was covered in the health classes. Brian and Michele were excellent teachers. They got along well with the students and made sure to be entertaining and kind.
