Nets of 3-D Shapes

What is a Net? A net is a pattern that can be used to build a 3-D solid.

A net shows all the faces of an object in a flattened format. The faces are the part that would be visible on the outside of an object. In the above diagram, the dark blue 'tabs' would not comprise part of the face. A net is the 2 dimensional shape that represents a 3 dimensional object when it's folded together.

Different nets can represent the same 3-D object. All of the following nets could be folded to make a cube.

These are only 4 of many nets that will make a cube.

A prism is a 3-D object that has 2 bases that are congruent - the same size and shape. The prism is named for the shape of the bases. The faces of a prism are parallelograms.
