A square number is the result when a number is multiplied by itself.
For example 4 x 4 = 16
Another way to write 4 x 4 is 42 which is also called four squared. That small '2' is called an exponent.
Therefore 42 = 16
Any whole number multiplied by itself will result in a perfect square.
For example, 9 is a perfect square because 9 = 3 x 3 or 32.
25 is a perfect square because 25 is the same as 5 x 5 or 52.
One way to to represent a square number is to use a number of objects to form a square.
