Addition:
1. Find a common denominator - multiply the denominators by each other OR find a common factor
2. Add numerators
3. Keep denominators the same
4. Reduce to lowest terms (simplify) - divide numerator and denominator by the same number
Subtraction:
1. Find a common denominator - multiply the denominators by each other OR find a common factor
2. Subtract numerators
3. Keep the denominators the same
4. Reduce to lowest terms (simplify) - divide numerator and denominator by the same number
Multiplication:
1. Covert any mixed fractions to improper fractions
2. Multiply numerators straight across
3. Multiply denominators straight across
4. Reduce to lowest terms - divide numerator and denominator by the same number
Division:
1. Convert any mixed fractions to improper fractions
2. “Keep, change, and Flip” - flip the second fraction
3. Multiply numerators straight across
4. Multiply denominators straight across
5. Reduce to lowest terms - divide numerator and denominator by the same number
Mixed Fractions:
1. Convert mixed fractions to improper fractions
- multiply the whole number and the denominator and add the numerator
- denominator stay the same
Improper Fractions:
1. Covert improper fractions to mixed fractions
- how many times does the denominator go into the numerator? That number is your whole number
- What is left? That is the numerator of your fraction. Keep the denominator the same.
