What do we need to do/know about the 4R Home Reading Program?
Research says that reading each day is the best way to become a better reader and that the best readers practice…
EVERYONE! EVERY DAY!
The best way to become a better reader is to do just that, READ and PRACTICE! All it takes to get started is setting aside a few minutes every single night. Help your child practice strategies they are learning at school. Being patient as your child reads is important. Try not to rush to give them the unknown word, allow them time, and ask if they need help.
Here are some strategies your child is learning that will help if they come across unknown words:
For readers who have some sight words, have them chunk the word or look for smaller parts in the bigger word, Ex. under/st/and. Another strategy readers can use is to skip the unknown word or jump over the word, finish reading the sentence, and go back to the unknown word afterwards. Whenever your child is really struggling with a word don’t draw the process out for too long, otherwise, they may lose the meaning of the text or forget the plot.
Sight Words often called high-frequency words, are commonly used words that children are encouraged to memorize as a whole by sight so that they can automatically recognize these words in print without having to use any strategies to decode them. Learning them helps children become more confident and fluent readers.
Students will be reminded daily to go and exchange books at their instructional reading level. If you find your child is not bringing home books or maybe the wrong levels, please email me so I can check in with them.
I will be sending home some reading packages as we learn and practice new skills. The most important thing a parent can do at home is share your love of reading and talk to your child about the books they are reading. Please see the links below for more information.
GOOD LUCK AND ENJOY THE MANY BOOKS THAT YOU WILL EXPLORE THIS YEAR!
