Kirpal Kaur Dhindsa

Kirpal Kaur Dhindsa Memorial Scholarship Application Kirpal Kaur Dhindsa Beyond being an amazing mother and a doting grandmother, Kirpal Kaur Dhindsa was a fiercely independent and ambitious woman. Born in Haryana, India on September 13, 1930 to the Bal family, Kirpal was the third of seven children. Her father instilled in them the importance of education and Kirpal was able to graduate with a Double Masters in Science; a strong feat for any woman in India at that time. As a single mother of three children, Kirpal immigrated to Winnipeg, Canada determined to make a better life for her and her three daughters.

Although moments were trying, she was able to persevere – with her education behind her and through hard work, determination and a strong mind set, she was able to build a life for herself and her daughters. Once her children were grown, Kirpal moved with her growing family to Calgary where her four grandchildren attended Bowness High School. She instilled in them the same values she had in her children; compassion, to live honestly and to learn at every opportunity. Kirpal Kaur Dhindsa passed away June 6, 1997 – a few days after her eldest granddaughter’s high school graduation.

Kirpal was continuously grateful for all that she was given in life and it is in her name that her family chooses to continue her memory with a scholarship of $1,000 dollars to 5 high schools in Calgary and area.

Education was a key factor in her life and a reason Kirpal was able to support herself and her kids as a new immigrant in Canada. It is the least they can do to show gratitude for having been blessed to Kirpal in their lives. There are so many lessons that Kirpal taught her children and grandchildren; she was and continues to be an amazing influence in their lives.
