Bergamo is a town located northeast of Milan, in the Lombardy region. Its older upper district, called Città Alta, is characterized by cobblestone streets. The city is surrounded by the Venetian Walls now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bergamo is surrounded by nature, and is full of rich history.
Republic Day, also widely known as ‘Festa della Repubblica’ for Italians, is celebrated every year on June 2. The historical day commemorates 1946 when Italians took a vote to decide the form of their government after World War II. They chose to be a republic. On this day, a massive celebration takes place in the city of Rome to celebrate the creation of the Italian Republic. Offices, banks, and schools close; grand parades march; and a ceremonial wreath is laid on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
