When we introduce vocabulary, we aim to make the word as rich and memorable as possible for our learners. The Frayer, or vocabulary frame is one way of engaging closely with key words.
Explicit instruction encourages students to:
say the word aloud (and hear it)
create a definition
make associations with other words
know what the word is and is not
The Literacy Pedagogy Guides have useful strategies to support vocabulary learning in New Zealand schools. Find the guide for your subject area. https://ncea.education.govt.nz/literacy-planning-resources#literacy-pedagogy-guides
