Russell County High School has participated in wrestling since 2005. The first head coach was Coach David Nichols. He was able to organize the team and see multiple state qualifiers and several state place winners. He also lead the team through multiple fundraising opportunities in order to purchase mats and other needed supplies. The David Nichols JV Tournament we host every year at the beginning of the season is named in honor of his efforts to advance wrestling in Russell County. He retired from teaching History and Economics in 2020. He enjoys spending time with his grandkids.
Coach Bo Bailey followed and he coached several athletes to the state tournament before he accepted an offer at Auburn High as a history teacher.
The next head coach was Coach Matt Pipkins. He led the team for a couple years and lead several athletes to the state tournament. He moved to Enterprise High School and founded the first Wrestling Team there.
The current head coach is Coach Eric Chamberlin. He has been the head coach since 2018 and also currently is a science teacher and Assistant 9TH Grade Football Coach.
There have been many wrestlers that have qualified for state since the foundation of our program. Several wrestlers have also placed in the AHSAA State Tournament.
In 2019-20 Russell County made history by seeing 2 wrestlers make the AHSAA Season Victory Board for earning more than 55 victories in one season. Colton Danielson had the most wins in the season for ALL Alabama wrestlers with 80 wins in 2019-2020. He is currently 5TH in Alabama History for most wins in a season. Shelby Fugate also made history by becoming just the second woman to ever qualify for the AHSAA wrestling tournament. She also secured the first victory by fall against a male opponent by a female during the state competition. They both also made history by becoming (to our knowledge) the first wrestlers from Russell County High School to sign and wrestle in College.
