Girl Scout Silver Award Project

About this Project

This website and its garden lesson plans were created by Lily Mahieu and Juliana Petersen as part of their Girl Scout Silver Award project.

The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. It challenges girls to identify a need in their community and design a project that creates a lasting, sustainable solution, not just a one-time event. Silver Award projects are meant to keep making a difference long after the project itself is finished, often by building a tool, program, or resource that others can use for years to come.

To earn the award, Girl Scouts must plan and lead the entire project themselves: researching the issue, designing a solution, working with community partners, and following through on every step, all while developing leadership and problem-solving skills along the way.

Why We Chose This Project

We saw that the SAGE Garden at San Pasqual Union relies on volunteer docents to bring garden lessons to life for students, but new volunteers had no easy way to learn about the role or get started. We wanted to make it simple for parents, grandparents, and other loved ones to say "yes" to volunteering by clearly explaining what a docent does and by organizing ready-to-use lesson plans for every grade level.

The Benefit We Hope This Brings

Our goal is for this resource to:

Make it easier to recruit garden docents, so every class gets the chance to learn in the garden
Save teachers and coordinators time by having lesson plans organized and ready to go
Strengthen the SAGE Garden program for years to come, even after we've moved on
Bring families closer to their students' school experience, through hands-on time together in the garden
Help students build a lasting connection to healthy food, nature, and their community

We hope this website continues to support the SAGE Garden program long after our Silver Award project is complete.
