Book Ends

For the bookend project, are assignment was to create a set of bookends that were inspired by a certain novel genre that has impacted you. the genre that I chose was nonfiction. I chose nonfiction because I wanted to create a set of bookends that had a fish swimming through the books, with the tail on one end of the books and the head of the fish on the other. when I was younger I used to read a lot of non-fiction books about animals. I was most enthusiastic about fish because I really enjoyed fishing.

first step of my process was to create the 90-degree slabs of clay that would give support to the books. after I had made my frame, I then sculpted a trout. I then cut the fish in half and and then placed each half on the book ends. After my bookends had been fired I then decided to keep them somewhat simplistic throughout the glazing process. I painted the fish in realistic colors and pattern, while leaving the bookends all white, so that all the viewers attention would be directed on the fish.

Overall I am satisfied with the way my bookends turned out.
