Singing, listening, and moving to music are the cornerstone activities in the general music curriculum at MLS.
Music engages empathy and social emotional awareness that forms the feelingful foundation of being human. MLS musicians have opportunities to develop all of their musical capacities. 3rd grade is where students begin to build on their earlier aural practice and move into notational literacy, starting with decoding rhythm patterns and delving into tonal solfege patterns using "do", "re", and "mi". For instrumental instruction, the 3rd grade curriculum includes the recorder unit which takes place later in the year. Students also experience Orff instruments and boomwhacker performance as part of their instrumental exploratory at school. Social dances and musical movement round out the 3rd grade curriculum.
