Pattern Making (Draping) :

Basic Knowledge of fabrics:

Categorizes of fabrics:

Basically, we can divided fabrics into two types; woven and Knit.

1) Woven

    • fibers that create a little criss-cross pattern, and it created when all those tiny fibers are actually woven together.
    • usually not that stretch
    • examples: linen, denim, cotton twill, satin, chiffon, corduroy, tweed and canvas

2) Knit

  • weaving by yarns or other stretchy materials
  • usually stretchy
  • Examples: Jersey rayon spandex, Cotton ribbed knit, French terry knit.

Common fabrics:

  • Satin
  • Denim
  • Cotton
  • Polyester
  • Velvet
  • Chiffon
  • Jeans

First Sewing Project: Sewing a shopping bag

1) Before I start making the shopping bag, I practices sewing straight lines in a piece of fabric.

2) I randomly picked the fabric, and cut what I need for making the bag. A large rectangle for the body of the bag and two parts for the handles.

3) I first turned the fabric inside out, and start sewing the side of the bags, and the handles.

4) Ironing the sides of the bag and handles to prepare for sewing parts together.

5) I sew around the mouth of the bag and connected the handles together, and the bag is finished.

Different stitches on the sewing MACHINE:

Straight Stitch: use to basting, seaming, and topstitching.

Zigzag: use to stitching around appliques, making buttonholes, sewing on buttons, and embroidering.

Blind hem and stretch blind hem: the blind hem stitch is designed to hem woven fabrics so that the stitches are almost invisible when looked at from the right side of the garment. The stretch blind hem stitch has an extra zigzag or two that stretches to invisibly hem knit fabrics.

Three-step zigzag: Use the three-step zigzag for finishing raw edges, sewing on elastic, mending tears, and making decorative effects.

Overlock: use to stitch and finish the seams in one step, usually works better on the woven fabric.

Decorative: use to decorate the border. Can be categorized in two types: closed, satin-type stitches (such as the ball and diamond) and open, tracery-type stitches (such as the daisy and honeycomb).
