The best way to grow your math brain is to play math games!
You will find many examples of math games you can play with your child on this page. Enjoy!
Counting
(PK 0-20, K 0-20, 0-100)
Count forward and backward by 1s to 20, 50 or even 100 if your child is ready.
Try counting by 10s or 5s too!
Start at different numbers like 4, 11, or 23, not just 0 and 1.
I Have, You Need
(PK 5 & 10, K 10 & 20)
“I have 2, how many do you have if we have 5 all together?”
“3!”
“I have 6, how many do you need to get to 10?”
“4!”
Guess My Number
Partner 1 picks a number. Partner 2 asks questions trying to guess what the number is. When you think you know the answer, say it, you only get 2 guesses so be sure to ask lots of good questions like even and odd, is it higher or lower than another number, does it have a 2 in it, etc.
Gameboards: Double Ten Frame, Beat Pete the Cat
Beat you to 10 & 20
Youngest person goes first, or play Rock, Paper, Scissors to see who goes first!
Roll 1 die
Count dots or subitize (know without counting!)
Put that many unifix cubes on your 10 frame
Next player’s turn. Use any “counters” you have at home!
First player to fill their ten frame (or gets to 10) wins! (You have to roll exactly how many you need)
Play again!
Materials: Deck of cards (J,Q,K are “honk” cards, A=1)
Place the deck of cards face down
Level 1: Dealer pulls 1 card and places it face up. The first person to say the number keeps the card.
Level 2: Dealer pulls 2 cards and places them face up. The first person to add the numbers together and say the sum keeps the cards.
Honk: If a “honk” card is pulled (J, Q, K) the first person to say honk keeps the card(s).
The person with the most cards at the end wins!
What's Behind my Back
What’s Behind My Back (5 or 10 items)
Youngest person goes first, or play Rock, Paper, Scissors to see who goes first!
First player hides some of their unfix cubes behind their back and shows the rest
Player 2 has to guess how many are behind their back
Keep taking turns until you know your sums of 5 and 10 in snap!
Which Numeral Will Win?!
Materials: Gameboard, sheet protector, whiteboard marker, pencil & paperclip (spinner)
Put the gameboard in a sheet protector and use your whiteboard marker to play!
Use the paperclip and the pencil to make a spinner.
Spin the spinner.
Write the number you spun.
Whomever fills their row first wins the game!
Foxes & Dens
Materials: Gameboard, 2 dice, 2 game tokens
Player A rolls 2 dice and adds the numbers together (try “subitizing” (saying without counting) the first die and counting on with the second die)
Subtraction Version: Players roll the dice and add the numbers to find the sum (4+5=9). Then they roll one of the dice again and subtract that die from their sum (9-2=7).
Player A checks to see if that number (the sum) is on the next den on the gameboard. If it is, the player’s fox (token) moves to that den.
If a player rolls an 11 or 12, they get to roll again, they may choose to roll both or just one die.
First player to reach the 5th den wins!
60+ Math Games
Dice War
Decide with your partner to use 1 or 2 dice
Both players roll at the same time
Count dots or subitize (know without counting!)
Try counting on (starting from the number you know without countina and counting up or on from that number on the second die)
Player with the higher total or sum wins!
Or change it up and the player with the lower total or sum wins!
