RSU 13 participates in an annual application process that seeks Maine State Department of Education approval for all procedures and services related to the district’s GT program. Maintaining this approval ensures that many of the program cost are reimbursable via State subsidy – which in turn assists importantly in sustaining GT service over time and supporting program growth. However, with financial benefits also comes some requirements and restrictions on how GT funding is utilized. Examples of this result in:
Adherence to guidelines for student identification within the exceptionality of GT.
A requirement that all GT services/instruction must be delivered during normal school hours.
A restriction on providing individual lessons to students in the arts, but allowing small group instruction.
An expectation that no more that 5% of the student population be identified within the exceptionality of giftedness.
