Gifted and talented children are those students who excel, or have the potential to excel, beyond their age peers, in the regular school program, to the extent that they need and can benefit from gifted and talented education programs.

A range of exceptionalities exist within our school population, and like all others - the presence of the exceptionality of giftedness suggests the probable and legitimate need for:

… ‘gifted and talented students’ means a child or youth who performs at or shows the potential for performing at a demonstrably higher level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment and who may:
exhibit high performance capability in an intellectual, creative, or artistic area
excel in a specific academic field

VISUAL PERFORMING ARTS - RSU 13 uses teacher and parent referrals and looks at works submitted. Work submitted may include pupil products such as auditions, portfolios, works-in-progress, and performances. Other referrals are accepted as well. The final list of nominees is sent to the GT committee for final identification.
Faculty within the visual and performing arts typically identify and bring forward nominations for students who consistently display advanced abilities or talents. Nominations are coordinated with the GT teacher responding within the grade level(s) being considered and portfolio reviews and considerations are typically held during the months of January or February of the school year.
Goal: To develop and implement comprehensive services for identified gifted and talented performing and visual arts students in RSU 13.
Goal: To effectively manage and coordinate the services for identified gifted and talented performing and visual arts students in RSU 13 including periodic review and revision as necessary by the district GT committee.
Objectives:
To offer a variety of evidence-based programming options to develop the talents and strength in creative arts to GT identified students.
To coordinate services of GT instruction, regular classroom instruction, and related professional services will enable GT identified students to demonstrate progress.
To collaborate with GT identified students and their parents, school staff, and the wider community to plan, program and evaluate the services offered for gifted and talented students.
To ensure that the services and programming offered is comprehensive and aligned to state and national standards.
To set clear and consistent policies and procedures for participation in programs that will provide to the advanced learning needs of gifted and talented students.
To offer guidance and assistance to gifted and talented students to identify future career goals and talent development pathways.
