Course Description: This class studies civilizations around the world and their key contributions to humanity. We use pre-modern history to understand how political, economic, and social systems developed to form the various cultures which exist today. Asia, with 60% of the world’s population, is a special focus of this class. However, we also spend time studying Africa, and to a lesser extent, the Americas. Example topics of study include the development of Chinese culture, religion in India, ancient African kingdoms, the rise of Islam, American Indian history, and Japan in the age of the samurai.
