Machine Safety Guidelines

SAFETY RULES FOR THE PLANER

  1. Lumber must be 13” long.
  2. Plane lumber that is free of:
    • Loose knots
    • Nails, screws, staples
    • Large cracks
    • Dirt, sand, stones
    • Paint or other finish

3. Never plane plywood, particle board or hard board.

4. Plane the board with the grain, never across the grain.

5. Stand to the side of the board being fed into the machine.

6. Do not look into the machine while it is running.

7. Handle the board on the sides or end so your fingers do not get pinched between the board and the table.

8. If the planer is not working properly or your board gets stuck:

    1. Shut off the power
    2. Wait for the machine to completely stop
    3. Turn height adjustment handle down 2 turns
    4. Remove board

9. Never clean any machine with your hand.

10. Do not take off more than 1/16” each pass.

11. Turn the height adjustment handle clockwise to take more off your board.

SAFETY RULES FOR THE BAND SAW

  1. Always wear safety glasses when in area of tool use.
  2. A clicking noise may indicate the blade is cracked and needs replacing.
  3. Set the sliding blade guard ⅛” to ¼” above the board that is being cut.
  4. Stand in front of the band saw when working, never at the side and allow no one to stand on the side.
  5. Keep hands at least 1” away from the blade at all times.
  6. Push the board through slowly and allow the saw to cut. If excessive pressure is needed, the blade might be dull.
  7. Do not remove scraps with your hands. Use a board or a brush.
  8. Do not attempt to cut the board with a coasting blade. Make sure the saw is running at full speed.
  9. Never back out of a cut. This will cause the blade to come off the top wheel.
  10. Make sure the blade is completely stopped before walking away from the saw.
  11. Before cleaning the inside of the band saw, unplug the saw so it cannot start during the cleaning.
