Quarter 1

The students will start their intarsia wood projects. These are pictures that are made from many different species of wood (oak, walnut, cherry, etc). The students will be using many machines to complete these projects such as a surface planer, band saw, scroll saw, belt sander, table router, miter saw, and orbital sander. The student will also be required to make a wooden frame for around the project which will be completed 2nd quarter.

During 1st quarter, the students will also complete several computer aided drawing assignments using a program called MacDraft. They will first complete a set of four drawings which will teach them how to properly use many different drawing tools. During this assignment, the students are given measurements of the objects and they are required to add 1/8" to each measurement before drawing the item or part. This will require the students to work on CAD skills as well as measurement and math. The students will also complete a multi-view drawing of an object showing the front, side and top views. The students will learn how to use different line styles and line weights as well as how to dimension the objects.

All students are required to buy a can of water-based spray finish for their intarsia wood project. This can be purchased from any hardware store or Walmart. Below are several examples of the finish.

The finish MUST be water-based and MUST be spray finish.

There are three types of sheens:

Clear gloss.....................very shiny

Clear semi-gloss............a little shiny

Clear satin.....................no shine

The choice they make will have no affect on their grade, but they are graded on the finishing of their project.
