Sight Words

This year our goal is for the children to learn 100 sight words! These words come from the the Fry list of sight words which are the most common words used for teaching reading, writing, and spelling. These high frequency words should be recognized instantly by readers.

You are going to hear the terms sight words, Fry words, trick words, and snap words all used interchangeably this year.

Sight Words are words which occur frequently during reading and which often cannot be sounded out. I would suggest putting them in a Ziploc bag marked "I don't know." As your child learns each word they can then put the words into a bag that says "I know". This will keep it fun for your child while they learn the sight words!

Here some other ideas for review:

*Have the child trace the word each time it is written.

*Write the words in sand or salt sprinkled in a container such as a shoe box lid.

*Have the child construct the word with magnetic letters.

*Play a Memory Game with the sight word cards. Place the cards face down on a table and try to match pairs.

*Use a dry erase board and have the child write the word out.
