Research has told us that SEL is most effective when it is both directly taught and woven into the academic curriculum. In addition to our comprehensive academic curriculum and weekly time devoted to SEL mini lessons in every classroom, all students in grades 1-4 participate in additional SEL classroom counseling lessons with the school counselor.
In typical school years, Kindergarten students participate in these classes every week. In the 2020-2021 school year however, every grade level is attending SEL with the School Counselor every month for a one week period! We utilize teacher/staff surveys to gauge our greatest needs in each grade level as well as yearly parent/guardian survey's to better understand how we can better support our students and families in these areas as well. Students are surveyed every three years in order to assess their understanding of the key SEL competencies and to better serve their needs.
With our social success rubrics, we have taken a more proactive and team approach to behavioral and social learning and we work hard to implement more logical and meaningful consequences. We do this through our school-wide motto: "Jefferson School ROCKS"...
