Karthik unit 5

Landform

A feature on the surface of Earth such as a mountain, hill, dune, ocean, hoodoo, or river.

Delta

A triangular landform where a river empties into another body of water. Caused by deposition.

Canyon

A deep gorge in the surface of Earth formed by the erosion of moving water and sand over millions of years. It has a long and wide top and a narrow base.

Sand Dune

Hills formed by wind blowing and depositing sand.

Weathering

The breaking down of rock into smaller particles from the effects of wind, water, and ice.

Erosion

The movement of sediment causing a gradual wearing down of something by wind, water, ice.

Deposition

The build-up of land by the settlement of sediment and soil in a new location.

TERM

U-shaped Valley

DEFINITION

A type of valley created by ice weathering and erosion (glacier).

LOCATION

V-shaped Valley

A type of valley created by water weathering and erosion (river).

Glacier

A giant slab of moving ice.

Colorado River

The river responsible for carving away the rock in Arizona to create the Grand Canyon.

Fossil Fuels

A natural, non-renewable resource such as coal, oil, or natural gas, formed over millions of years from the remains of living organisms.

Coal

A solid fossil fuel that is formed from the concentrated remains of plants over millions of years.

Oil

Also called petroleum, this is a flammable liquid produced from remains of marine organisms buried under layers of sediments for millions of years.

Natural Gas

A flammable material, without a definite form, produced from remains of marine organisms buried under layers of sediment found near oil deposits.

Pressure

Forced of objects pushing on other objects.

Sedimentary Rock

Layers of rock formed when sediment is deposited and then compacted and cemented over time. Heat and pressure causes the layers to cement together.

Organic Matter

The waste and remains of plants and animals.

Compaction

Bits of rock that are pressed tightly together as layers of rock form on top of each other.

Cementation

Over time, particles of sediment begin to stick to each other or bond to one another.

TERM

Mountain

DEFINITION

An uplift of land that stretches over the land and forms a peak. Can be formed by tectonic plates colliding into each other or a volcano.

LOCATION

Wind energy Definition: and energy made from wind to turn into electricity

Examples: Wind turbine

Solar energy definition: energy made from the sun to make electricity.

Examples: solar panels can make lighting and cooking.

Hydroelectric energy definition: energy made from rapidly moving streams or lakes.

Examples: a dam

Geothermal energy definition: an energy made from the heat of the core of the earth

Examples: Geothermal station
