Grading, Missing Work, and Unfinished Work Policies

2023-2024 Cactus Ranch Elementary School Grading Guidelines

All Cactus Ranch students will receive a report card four times per year on a nine-week grading period.  The dates for the end of each nine-week grading period are:

Progress Reports/Conferences- Parents and teachers may request a conference at any time for academic or behavioral concerns. Parents in grades 3-5 are able to view grades at any time through the Home Access Center.  Parents may set up a Home Access account at https://roundrockisd.org/hac/

Students in Kinder-Grade 2  The RRISD Primary Report Card is standards-based and progress is reported on the knowledge and skills your child is expected to master at each grade level. Standards are based on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).  This report card also gives feedback on behavioral skills.

Students in Grades 3-5:

Specials Classes- Teachers in Art, Music, and Wellness report student progress on the report card using the following terms:

E=Excellent, S=Satisfactory, N=Needs Improvement, U=Unsatisfactory

Number of Grades Per Quarter- Students in Grades 3-5 receive number-based grades in core content areas. Elementary teachers will take a minimum of 8 grades each quarter in the core content areas of Math, Science, and Social Studies and 12 grades in Language Arts (with a mix of grades for reading and writing.).  Grades will be put into the grade book within 10 days of the assignments. Special projects may take up to 2 weeks to grade.

Grading Categories- All grades in a subject will be weighted in the following manner:

When calculating a nine week average for a content area, no single grade will count more than 30% of the total average. No two grades will count more than 50% of the total average.  Academic dishonesty may be grounds for an automatic zero on that assignment.

Re-do Policy- Corrections can be made by a student to bring a failing grade up to 70. Students will have one opportunity to redo a failing assignment. Makeup assignments must be turned in before the nine-week grading period ends.

Late Work- Our goal is for students to learn concepts being presented in class. The focus will be on finding ways to support students in being successful in work completion. Late work is accepted throughout the nine-week grading period. Late work may result in the loss of “Fun Friday” time on a weekly basis in order to encourage students to keep pace with assignments.  If late work is not turned in before the nine-week grading period ends, it will result in a zero on that assignment.

Absent Work- Students have as many days as they were absent to make up the missed assignments. Students who are absent are responsible for working with the teacher on a plan to make-up work.

Extra Credit- Cactus Ranch Elementary students in grades 3-5 will have an opportunity to earn extra credit in each core subject area (Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies) every nine weeks. Successfully completing the Extra Credit assignment can earn a student up to 20 points added to one of the daily grades in that subject area. Extra credit assignments must be completed one week before the nine-week grading period ends.  Extra credit opportunities for each nine weeks are posted on each grade level’s website.
