General Mathematics Summary
Mathematics is the only language shared by all human beings regardless of culture, religion or gender. For example; pi is still 3.14159……, whichever country you come from. Very few people (if any) are literate in all the world’s languages (English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Japanese, etc.) but the shared language of Mathematics connects us with people across continents and through time. Mathematics is creative, requires initiative and promotes curiosity in an increasingly complex and data-driven world.
General Mathematics will prepare students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to participate effectively in the community and the economy which requires the development of skills that reflect the demands of the 21st century. Students undertaking General Mathematics will develop their critical and creative thinking, oral and written communication, information & communication technologies (ICT) capability, ability to collaborate, and sense of personal and social responsibility — ultimately becoming lifelong learners who demonstrate initiative when facing a challenge. The use of technology to make connections between mathematical theory, practice and application has a positive effect on the development of conceptual understanding and student disposition towards mathematics.
General Mathematics is designed for students who want to extend their mathematical skills beyond Year 10, but whose future studies or employment pathways do not require calculus. It incorporates a practical approach that equips learners for their needs as future citizens. Students will learn to ask appropriate questions, map out pathways, reason about complex solutions, set up models and communicate in different forms. They will experience the relevance of mathematics to their daily lives, communities and cultural backgrounds. They will develop the ability to understand, analyse and take action regarding social issues in their world. When students gain skill and self-assurance, when they understand the content and when they evaluate their success by using and transferring their knowledge, they develop a mathematical mindset.

Mathematical Methods Summary
Mathematics is more than a subject that everyone in school needs to take. Many believe that mathematics is only needed in the Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics fields (STEM). That is true, mathematics is absolutely essential in those fields, but it is also needed in many other fields including economics, many of the social sciences such as psychology and sociology, and in many of the arts and humanities disciplines including art, music, and mass communications. Mathematics has been called “the universal language”.
Numbers and mathematics help us keep score; not just in sports contests, but in measuring money, time, distance, cooking and baking, planning an improvement project, and buying the necessary materials. Building a new deck on your house or finding the amount of material to build a fence are both good examples of mathematics in our daily lives. A solid foundation in mathematics is an essential skill for students pursuing any academic degree and that same quantitative capability is necessary for success in life as well.

Mathematics equips students with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world. These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving skills, and the ability to think in abstract ways. Today, the subject transcends cultural boundaries, and its importance is universally recognised. Mathematics is a creative discipline. It can stimulate moments of pleasure and wonder; when a person solves a problem for the first time, discovers a more elegant solution to a problem or suddenly sees hidden solutions.
Specialist Mathematics provides a course of study for students who wish to undertake an in-depth study of mathematics, with an emphasis on concepts, skills and processes related to mathematical structure, modelling, problem solving and reasoning. This study has a focus on interest in the discipline of mathematics in its own right and investigation of a broad range of applications, as well as development of a sound background for further studies in mathematics and mathematics related fields.
Students who undertake Specialist Mathematics will develop confidence in their mathematical knowledge and ability, and gain a positive view of themselves as mathematics learners. They will gain an appreciation of the true nature of mathematics, its beauty and its power.
Specialist Mathematics is designed to be taken in conjunction with Mathematical Methods. It is assumed that work covered in Mathematical Methods will be known before it is required in Specialist Mathematics.
Even though Specialist Mathematics is not a pre-requisite for most university courses, the universities regard it as a desirable subject for some courses (particularly Engineering). A student who is very good at mathematics and enjoys the challenge that mathematics provides, should consider Specialist Mathematics for one of their options.
