Backward Design (Elementary)

The learning goal for this micro-credential is to familiarize teachers with backwards design and help them to use it in forming their own unit plan in the subject of their choice. You will be exploring the components of backward design and will use what you have learned to apply it to your classroom. You will create a unit plan using backward design and share artifacts of how you used it in your classroom.

Backward Design (Secondary)

For this badge, you will learn how to plan your lessons/units using backwards design to focus your lessons on what your students need to know, promote a deeper understanding of concepts or ideas, and to guide instructional strategies with the end result in mind. Explore some of the resources on utilizing backwards design within the classroom. Discover how educators are using backwards design to ensure that students are learning state standards with a deeper understanding by beginning each unit with the final assessment and developing learning activities and formative assessments to support the end goal.

Differentiation (Elementary)

Teachers use whole group instruction, but tailors independent practice based on different student needs and preferences. Empowering students to take ownership of their learning by providing them multiple pathways to demonstrate mastery. The students meet the requirements given to them based on their needs.

Learning Objectives:

  • During this module the educator will choose an article and submit a response to both differentiation questions.

  • A lesson plan will be submitted that supports differentiated instruction using one of the following examples below:

*Literature circles around different text but same theme.

*Grouping students based on levels but delivering same content.

*Create a choice board that supports differentiation.

Differentiation (Secondary)

This badge is designed to explain and share strategies for differentiation content, process, product and learning environment. As resources are explored, the learner is asked to consider which strategies they could see themselves using and who could benefit from those strategies. Learners are asked to plan an activity or activities that exhibit differentiation in each of the areas. They are also asked to identify how the differentiation is beneficial and how it addresses the needs of the various students in their class, such as EC, 504’s, AIG, ESL, etc.

Educators will explore articles and videos on many strategies and reflect on they will utilize the strategies in their classroom. This badge will also you to explore several strategies from each category. As educators, we must continue to add to our toolbox, because every child is different, and we owe it to our students to grow along with them.

Universal Design for Learning (Secondary)

  • Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework for learning that uses flexible learning environments and accommodates learning differences through multiple ways of representation, expression and engagement. It uses research based strategies proven to be effective with all types of learners.

  • Engagement- stimulate motivation and interest for learning

  • Representation-present information and content in different ways

  • Action and Expression-differentiate the ways that students can express what they know
