The origins of Samba
Samba has its roots in African traditions which were brought over during the transatlantic trade in enslaved people.
In particular influences come from the African countries of Angola and what was called the Congo.
The word ‘samba’ is thought to be derived from the Kimbundu (one of many languages spoken in Angola) ‘semba’, which referred to an invitation to dance.
Samba originated in Bahia region.
Samba is particularly popular in the cities of São Paulo, Salvador and of course, Rio de Janeiro.
Samba music and dance are very closely related.
