I studied Russian Literature and Culture at Mount Holyoke College. I have a Master's in Linguistics with Language Teaching Specialization from the University of Oregon.
I've taught Spanish at the secondary school level since fall 2006. I also teach Russian at Concordia's Russian Language Village in the summer. In the past I have taught English in various Russian cities including Moscow, Tyumen, and Kazan.
The 7/8 Spanish program is a story-based curriculum with cultural study lessons conducted in Spanish. Stories are central to the program. They are everywhere, appeal to senses and can be used to teach empathy and compassion. Our stories come from songs, news, anecdotes, legends and our collective imaginations. See the scope and sequence chart to see how the curriculum aligns to Aventura Level 1 and the Oregon Second Language Standards.
In addition to stories, cultural study lessons include conversations, games, and hands-on activities.
At the end of 8th grade, Riverdale Grade School students take the STAMP 4s test, a language proficiency exam. The goal is to achieve Novice High or higher in each of the four sections, reading, writing, listening and speaking.
