Ritsumeikan Junior and Senior High School was designated a Super Global High School (SGH) by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) in 2014. This recognition gave the school a unique opportunity to develop programs that encourage students to deepen their understanding of global issues through classroom learning, research, and overseas outreach.
At the heart of this global education effort was the guiding vision:
“To have awareness and responsibility as members of the global era and to contribute to the construction of a peaceful society.”
To realize this vision, the school initiated international collaborations and study programs that immersed students in pressing global themes. These included the Philippine Study Tour with Philippine Science High School – Eastern Visayas Campus (themes: poverty and natural disasters), exchange programs with Kaohsiung Municipal Kaohsiung Senior High School and Kaohsiung Municipal Kaohsiung Girls’ High School in Taiwan (theme: world issues), and the Sweden Study Tour with Bladins Gymnasium and Ystad Gymnasium (themes: sustainable development goals and environmental issues). Through these experiences, students were encouraged to build leadership skills, cultivate partnerships, and develop the capacity to seek solutions for society’s challenges.
Building on this foundation, Ritsumeikan launched the Rits Super Global Forum (RSGF) as its flagship initiative. Held annually, the RSGF became a platform where students from Japan and abroad could engage in discussions, collaborative workshops, and presentations on global issues. The forum was also strengthened by homestay programs with partner schools, which fostered cultural exchange, friendship, and mutual understanding.
In 2021, Ritsumeikan was once again selected to join the Super Global High School Network, reaffirming its role as a leader in global education. This milestone further established the RSGF as a centerpiece of the school’s international initiatives and a living embodiment of its educational vision.
