PROJECT 2

the sonic event

Construct a Max patch that creates synthesized sound or manipulates digital audio in some way. The specifics of how and why are up to you, but this patch is to be used as the sole source of (intentional) sound generation in the realization of a sonic event based on a graphical or text-based score of your own device.

The event is to be realized in real time during class—either by yourself or in conjunction with any number of additional performers. Larger ensembles can be culled from the class roster or feature outside guests, and the event itself can pre-rehearsed or not, as is most fitting to your needs. In either case, the score should be able to realized by performers with little or no expertise / background in music, experimental or otherwise, without instruction other than any supplemental writing that accompanies the score and patch itself.

The duration of this event is flexible, but it should be significant. If your piece is only eight seconds long, you should have a good reason why it is only eight seconds long. Likewise, if it is an hour long, you should make each moment count. (Please note that we have limited time for everyone to present and discuss their work, so please consult me prior to planning a durational performance. It may be necessary to adjust expectations based on the time available.)
