📚Positive Relationships & School Rules

At Risca Primary School, we believe that a consistent and caring approach from all staff helps children feel secure, confident, and clear about what is expected of them. When routines are familiar, pupils are better able to make positive choices and thrive in a calm, supportive environment.

We follow an Assertive Discipline approach, where positive praise is at the heart of everything we do. We make a point of recognising and celebrating good behaviour, while gently guiding children to make better choices when needed. By using this approach across the whole school, we create a positive, respectful atmosphere where everyone feels valued.

We also place great importance on teaching good manners and strong values, which underpin our school ethos. Our mission statement and school song promote kindness, tolerance, and respect for others.

Children are encouraged to use good manners every day, and these are displayed throughout the school:

Our School Rules

Our school rules are an important part of creating a positive learning environment. These are clearly displayed in every classroom and around the school, along with rewards and consequences. We regularly revisit these with the children so they feel confident and involved in maintaining our shared expectations.

We believe that strong partnerships between home and school are key. If we ever have concerns about a child’s behaviour, we will always contact parents and carers to work together in supporting the child to succeed.

🏅Our Golden Rules

At Risca Primary School, we keep our expectations clear and simple so that every child can understand and follow them with confidence. Our five Golden Rules help everyone stay safe, respectful, and ready to learn:

🌟Do as the teacher asks the first time

🌟Use the right voice

🌟Keep working until your job is finished

🌟Keep hands, feet, objects, and unkind words to yourself

🌟Always walk in school

💫Celebrating Success

We love to recognise and celebrate when pupils make positive choices and try their best. Children are rewarded in a variety of ways, including:

💫Praise from staff

💫Stickers

💫Moving up the class behaviour chart

💫Class rewards or points

💫House points

💫Exceptional Effort Certificates, awarded in our Friday assembly

By celebrating success, we help build confidence, encourage positive behaviour, and create a happy and supportive school community.

Supporting Positive Behaviour

We understand that sometimes children may need reminders to make the right choices. When this happens, we use simple, clear, and consistent steps to help guide them back on track.

Our approach focuses on encouragement first, followed by calm and fair consequences where needed:

😀 Positive reinforcement (e.g. “I like the way that…”)

😀 A non-verbal reminder (such as a look)

😀 A gentle reminder of the rule (e.g. “I need you to…”)

😀 First warning

😀 Second warning

😀 Time in a partner classroom (for a short period)

😀 Missing a small part of playtime (2–5 minutes)

😀A phone call home

Our aim is always to support children in understanding their behaviour and making positive choices. We work closely with parents and carers to ensure every child feels supported and successful.
