Dear Parents/Carers,

A very condensed and busy term is drawing to a close. I wanted to take the opportunity to thank you all for your support and update you on a range of key issues at the school. I am delighted to report that we met with Estyn and they fully support our revised Post Inspection Action Plan. The plan is sharply linked to the recent report and has a real focus on improving learning in every classroom. The new Risca Learning Charter is a key part of this process. To ensure that we are continuing to make progress and drive the changes, we are conducting a whole school “Pupil Progress Review” after the Easter Break.

I am pleased to report that our plans linked to improving attendance are continuing to have a positive impact. We’re currently 3.5% above the figure from this time last year. We currently stand at 88.1% and we are determined to improve further. This is the direct result of our assertive and relentless approach to improving attendance. Put simply, we want every pupil in school every day. This ensures that each pupil has the best chance to reach their potential. Further, a sharp focus on regulation and routines has a powerful impact on pupil wellbeing. Thank you for your support.

On a similar note, I have some concerns relating to the standard of uniform. Most pupils are smart and ready to learn each day. However, a minority of our pupils are missing key parts of the uniform too regularly and I need your support on this matter. Our Uniform is simple, inexpensive and compliant with all WG guidance. My main concerns relate to footwear. It must be all black. In addition, students must wear a white shirt and the correct tie with a black v-neck jumper, or a school hoodie. These are basic things that we need to get right. Our policy has not changed and we will be monitoring this closely after the break.

We are fast approaching the Summer GCSE Examination season and the staff have been working extremely hard preparing the pupils in Key Stage 4. In particular, there has been a sharp focus on coursework moderation and the submission of marks to WJEC for Year 11. We are holding an Easter Revision School between the 2nd and 4th April  between 10am and 2pm. This will involve core and non-core subjects. Information will be shared on the website and through Classcharts.

Thanks to everyone for supporting the “Comic Relief” Day last week, we have raised around £350 so far. It was a real pleasure to see the Year 11 Prefect Team leading activities at break and lunchtime. We were also looking to support the Year 11 Prom Fund and our newly formed Risca CCS Parent Teacher Association has been active in their support for this. The PTA have a real sense of energy, and high aspirations to raise money to support enrichment activities for all pupils. They are active online and have a Facebook page. Please have a look and support them if you can!

I am delighted to report that we have sporting success to report. Our Year 10 Netball Team have been crowned SE Wales Champions following a tournament this week. Well done to all of the pupils involved. It is extremely pleasing to see the range of enrichment activities involving so many pupils. Thank you to all of the staff who run these activities and a huge commendation to all of the pupils who enjoy these sporting and cultural events.

Finally, we are saying farewell to two members of staff this Easter. Firstly, Mr S. Allen (Technology) is leaving to take up a new position closer to home and Miss G. Williams (Expressive Arts) is leaving us to pursue a new career. We thank both members of staff for their commitment and wish them well for the future. I hope that you all enjoy a peaceful and relaxing Easter break. School reopens for all pupils at 8.45am on Monday 8th April 2024.

Yours Sincerely.

Friday, 01 March 2024

Dear Parents/Carers,

Happy St. David’s Day to you all. I hope that you are well and starting to feel the benefits of the longer daylight hours. I wanted to update you on some changes to staffing in the school following recent internal recruitment processes. The following staff have been appointed;

Mrs L. Coles - Assistant Headteacher - Attendance and Wellbeing

Miss D. Pitcock - Associate Assistant Headteacher - Skills

MIss E. Johnston - Principal Teacher of English

Mrs M. Lewis - ALNCo.

I am sure that all members of the school community will wish the members of staff well in their new roles. I know that all of the successful candidates are determined to rise to the challenge and make a positive difference in their new roles. They, along with all of the staff team, will receive my full support as we all work together to improve the quality of learning at RCCS. I will be meeting 2 Estyn Inspectors on Monday 4th March in school to review our new Post Inspection Action Plan. Once the plan has been approved by Estyn and our Governors, we will post this on the website.

I am pleased to report that our whole school attendance figure is continuing to creep upwards steadily. We are now over 88% and this is more than 2% higher than last year. Thank you for your support. We are continuing to demand the highest standards of behaviour in class and around the school. To reiterate my previous communications, the school is a non-vaping zone and we are monitoring this closely. It is, of course, illegal for any pupil to be vaping. We are checking the toilet areas regularly to ensure that all pupils are safe. In addition, if we receive information or have suspicions, we are conducting bag and coat searches to ensure that no illegal activity is taking place on the school site. We contact parents if banned/illegal items are found. Thankfully, this is rare and only involves a tiny minority of pupils.

The GCSE exam season is now only 8 school weeks away and we are in the final crucial phase with Year 11. We have run assemblies to engage and motivate the year group and we will be organising revision and study skill sessions. Further, we are looking to incentivise good attendance, and a commitment to revision, with prizes and rewards linked to the Prom. Finally we will support the UK wide “Comic Relief” Day on Friday 15th March. It will be  a non-uniform day and we are splitting the proceeds 3 ways with support for Comic Relief, the school Prom and Class Charts rewards. I am delighted to report that we have a group of committed parents who are keen to set up a Risca CCS PTA. This is still in the early phases, however, there is a clear commitment and it is hoped that we can raise some funds to support enrichment activities for our pupils. I will update you soon with further details.

Thank you for ongoing support.

Yours Sincerely.

Dear Parents/Carers,

This busy and highly condensed half term is drawing to a close and we have certainly been busy. It is traditionally the time of the school year when we are relentlessly focused on working with our KS4 pupils to prepare them for the summer examination series. Put simply, our core business is teaching and learning and ensuring that all pupils are making progress and ready for any internal or external assessments. Everything we do in relation to supporting wellbeing and improving attendance is linked to our focus on learning and progress. To this end we have been working on the creation of a RCCS “Learning Charter” which outlines, as a baseline, what every pupil and every teacher will do to ensure high quality learning takes place. I will be launching this with the pupils after the break. The teaching staff have started to use the charter this week. The Charter is shown below.

We are continuing to make steady progress in relation to whole school attendance and Mrs M Madden and the Wellbeing teams are working relentlessly to ensure that we have as many pupils in school every day. We, of course, need your support on this matter and would urge you to promote the key benefits of 100% attendance. In terms of uniform, nearly all pupils are dressed appropriately and ready to learn each day. Our main challenge continues to be linked to footwear. Our policy is clear and has not changed, pupils must wear all black footwear.

I recently talked to you about my concerns in relation to anti-social behaviour and vaping in the toilets at RCCS. We are monitoring this closely and I want to remind the school community that vaping is not allowed on school site and is illegal for any person below the age of 18. We will contact parents if we suspect that illegal vaping activity in school has taken place. Thank you for your support on this matter. In addition, despite staffing issues and budget constraints, we are emptying the sanitary bins in the female toilets on a more regular basis. Please be assured that we are doing all we can to promote respectful and safe behaviour in the toilets and across the school. It is, of course, a tiny minority of pupils who choose to behave in this way and none of us should be prepared to tolerate it.

Year 9 are about to complete the final stages of their options process and I want to thank everyone who attended our recent “Options Evening” in school. All of the details relating to the process are available on the school website. We have also taken some feedback from the Year 11 Prefect group in relation to preparing for the exams. Most pupils were able to identify the areas for further work and support and we will use this to identify the action points for all of us as we head towards the elms in the Summer term. I am currently working with Governors, the LA and Leaders in school to finalise our “Post Inspection Action Plan” for Estyn. We will share this with Estyn in March and then publish the latest version online for all stakeholders.

On a final note, Mr Oliver, Senior Assistant Headteacher, will be leaving us on February 23rd to start a new job overseas. Mr Oliver joined the school in 2015 and has occupied a number of senior roles in the school and also served a Staff Governor on the Governing Body. Mr. Oliver also stepped up to the role of Acting Headteacher in the Summer Term of 2023 following Mr. Kendall’s illness and subsequent retirement. I want to thank Mr. Oliver for his professionalism, inclusivity and dedication to the school community. I am sure that we all wish him well for the future.

I hope that you all enjoy a restful half term break. Thank you for your ongoing support. School reopens at 8.50am on Monday 19th February 2024. In line with the school calendar, Friday 23rd February is a Staff Training Day and the school is closed for all pupils on that day.

Yours Sincerely.

Here is the timetable and important information for our whole school PSE Day which takes place on Thursday 8th February 2024. If you have any queries please contact Mrs T Pearce (Lead Teacher of PSE) at the school.

Friday, 26 January 2024

Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope that you are all well. The Spring Term is well underway and many Key Stage 4 pupils have been involved in examinations and assessments ahead of the main GCSE Examinations in the Summer Term. In addition, we have started our new school day timings and returned to a single break and lunchtime for all pupils. I have been delighted to see the number of pupils engaged in enrichment activities at lunchtime so far. We are continuing to develop this and have shared the timetable online, and with the pupils in school. In addition, we have ordered some additional chairs for the dining area to ensure that we have sufficient seating for all pupils. Further, we are working with the Local Authority and “Keep Wales Tidy” to introduce additional outside seating and a garden area which should be ready for the Summer Term.

As always, I am appealing to everyone to support our efforts in relation to improving attendance. Estyn highlighted some improvements and I am determined to build on this. 100% attendance is the aim for all pupils, and with your support we can continue the upward trajectory. It is common for everyone to have cold and flu-type symptoms at this time of the year. We would urge everyone to battle through this, keep hydrated, take some paracetamol and be in school. Thank you for your support.

I want to thank all of the parents who attended the Estyn Report Parental Forums in school this week. I want to reassure everyone that I am listening to the legitimate concerns raised. The level of passion and support from parents was incredibly clear to see. The recent report was not acceptable and the result of declining educational standards and poor leadership over a period of time. The first thing for me to do is to use this as a baseline for us all to move forward. The improvement journey is underway already as highlighted in the report. I emphasised the positive features of the report in the press release recently. I have the full backing of the Governors and the Local Authority. We are refining the action plan and working with all partners to ensure that resources are in place to move the school forward. The Local Authority has been very supportive in relation to the school budget, despite the challenges that all organisations are facing in the current economic climate. I will be making  the necessary changes required to ensure that all pupils at Risca CCS achieve their full potential. I will hold another parental forum in the summer term to promote further dialogue and listen further. It is more important than ever for us to work together.

I am working relentlessly with all staff to address the key issues from the report. Most of these issues relate to improving the quality of teaching and learning. We have some excellent teachers at the school and I will be using their skills to share this best practice and reduce the levels of inconsistency across the school. The quality of learning in the classroom is the most vital thing that we do and we need to keep our focus on this. As the Headteacher  I will use my experience, drive and determination to galvanise the staff team and lead the changes. The label and status of “Special Measures” should be used as a lever to improve the school sharply and, as I stated recently, Risca CCS will emerge much more strongly from this. Put simply, the pupils will benefit from this process.

I have spoken to my staff team about a “back to basics” approach in the classroom and we are introducing a “Risca Learning Charter” which will apply to all staff and pupils. This will be monitored daily by me and Leaders across the school.

Finally, I have become increasingly concerned by the behaviour of a tiny minority of pupils in the toilets at the school. Anti-social behaviour and vaping is simply not acceptable. Many schools are facing these challenges and we are determined to deal effectively with this behaviour. It is worth reminding everyone that vaping is illegal on the school site and illegal for anyone under the age of 18. Clearly this is a huge societal problem and a public health disaster waiting to happen, however, please remind your son/daughter of the dangers of vaping and the legal position. Please be assured that we are monitoring this safeguarding issue very closely.

Thank you for your support.  Please do not hesitate to contact me at the school if you have any questions.

Yours Sincerely.

Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope that you all enjoyed a peaceful and relaxing Christmas break. I want to take the opportunity to wish you all a Happy New Year. 2024 promises to be a very busy and exciting year for the school. It was a real pleasure to witness the awards ceremonies on the final day of term. We have made progress in relation to attendance, however, we have a long way to go. I need the support of all parents to ensure that every student is in school every day. This is the single biggest challenge for us and also the most obvious way in which your child can realise their potential. 100% attendance leads to higher achievement.

I would also like to remind you of our clear expectations in relation to school uniform. It is vital to ensure that every student is ready to learn at the start of the day. This means the following basics need to happen.

Punctuality - in school by 8.50am

Equipment ready (Pens, pencils, calculators, PE kit etc.)

Wearing the correct uniform including all black footwear and the correct tie

Mobile phones switched off and not seen inside the building

Thank you for your support on this matter. I have been delighted with the behaviour and attitude of nearly all of our pupils. Risca pupils are respectful, kind and committed to learning. I must stress that I will not tolerate behaviour which disrupts learning or is unsafe. Our “Ready, Respectful and Safe” approach is designed to support learning and I have reminded all pupils of the fact that it is unacceptable to disrupt learning, be disrespectful or endanger the safety of others. I know that all parents will support this approach.

Finally, we have started our new school day timings this week and are developing the range of enrichment activities available at lunchtime and afterschool for all pupils.

The school day is organised as follows.

08.50 - 09.05   - Registration

09.05 - 10.05   - Period 1

10.05 - 11.05   - Period 2

11.05 - 11.20   - Break

11.20 - 12.20   - Period 3

12.20 - 13.20   - Period 4

13.20 - 14.00   - Lunch (Year 7 start at 1.15pm in the short term)

14.00 - 15.00   - Period 5.

We are keeping this under review and talking to students and staff regularly. We are also developing “quiet” spaces for some pupils eg: The Library and the ALN Base during the lunchtime break.

The Estyn Report will be published early next week and I will ensure that all parents are informed of the details through Classcharts from the 15th January.

Yours Sincerely.

Friday, 22 September 2023

Dear Parents/Carers,

We are about to complete our third week back in school and the pace is certainly starting to quicken. Firstly, can I thank you all for your outstanding support at the start of the term. Nearly all pupils have settled well and are wearing the correct uniform. It is worth noting that the minor issues linked to uniform tend to be linked to ties or incorrect footwear. Please work with us to ensure that your son/daughter has all black footwear. I am delighted to report that phone usage inside the building has been all but eliminated. Our policy is fair and the pupils have responded brilliantly to the rules. Pupils are allowed to use their phone before school and at break and lunchtime. Phones should not be seen or heard inside the building or in any classroom. This has allowed us to focus sharply on learning.

It was a pleasure to meet so many parents this week at our Year 10 and 11 “Expectations Evening.” We were able to share information about GCSE courses and outline the critical importance of good attendance. In addition, we enjoyed the informal discussions after the presentations. We want to work in partnership with you to ensure that every pupil realises their full potential at the school. Thank you for your support.

Pupils in Years 7-9 were involved in the annual school photograph day. It was a very busy day and it required high levels of organisation and lots of patience! Thanks to all staff and pupils involved in the day. We look forward to updating our records and seeing the new pictures of the pupils looking incredibly smart.

Finally, we are absolutely determined to improve our attendance levels this year. This is a challenge for all schools across the UK. We cannot do this without your support. We have made a positive start to the year and we are currently standing at 90.5%. This is a significant increase on the final figure for last year of 84.7%. Put simply, we need every pupil in school, every day. If a pupil has attendance of 90%, that is 20 days off school a year equating to 4 full weeks. We have made some progress and need to work in partnership to improve this further. This will, in turn, naturally help your son/daughter to make further progress. Please do not hesitate to contact me at the school if you would like to discuss an issue raised in the letter.

Yours Sincerely,

Mr M. Hulland

A MESSAGE FROM OUR NEW HEADTEACHER

Friday, 15th September 2023

Please see letter sent to Parents and Carers last week from Mr Hulland

Friday, 08 September 2023

Dear Parents/Carers,

I am delighted to introduce myself as the new Headteacher of Risca Community Comprehensive School. It is an honour serve the school community and lead the staff team in the next phase of the development of the school. I would like to thank the Governors for trusting me to undertake this vital role and I would also like to pay tribute to the leadership of my predecessor, Mr. Kendall, who served the school community with compassion and integrity over many years. We wish him well in his retirement.

I have joined the school having served as Headteacher of Cardiff West CHS since 2016. We have enjoyed an excellent first week in school and it has been a pleasure welcoming all of the students back into school after the summer break. In particular, I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new Year 7 students. Welcome to Team Risca CCS! It has been uncomfortably warm at times and I have been delighted with the standard of school uniform around the school. It is vital for us to maintain this every week. I am excited by the potential of the school. There is no limit to what each and every student can achieve. In order to maximise the potential of each student we must ensure that no learning time is lost. I have spoken to the students this week about the need for excellent attendance and the absolute necessity for high levels of punctuality. We simply cannot afford to waste any learning time.

I have inherited a very experienced and committed staff team and I will be working with them relentlessly to ensure that we deliver the action points from the Post Inspection Action Plan. Estyn are likely to return this year and measure progress. The school was judged to require “Significant Improvement” in Autumn 2022. Clearly, we have work to do and I will be leading this process, and your support as parents is vital. We, of course, need to work in partnership and I know that you all share my desire to ensure that your son/daughter realises their full potential. This starts with full attendance, punctuality and a positive attitude to learning every day. It has been heartening to talk to the pupils this week and I have found them to be respectful and aspirational. I have the very highest expectations for every student at Risca CCS.

I am spending time talking to staff, pupils and Governors in my first half term. In addition, I am working with our partners in the Local Authority to ensure that our plans are progressing. Please do not hesitate to contact me at the school if you would like to discuss the progress of your son/daughter.

I look forward to meeting with you soon.

Best Regards, Mr M. Hulland, Headteacher

GCSE RESULTS 2023

Many congratulations to our students on your GCSE results and the other qualifications you have gained this year! Your secondary education took a big hit due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the way you managed this and the way you approached the exams was superb and I am so pleased you have been rewarded with the success you deserve! This reflects your hard work during your time at RCCS and at your Primary school before that, not just your time in Year 11. Your resilience and positive attitude certainly paid off.  Your teachers are delighted and as always I want to thank them and all the staff at our school for their dedication and hard work: it has been well rewarded!

I hope all of you are now in a position to pursue the next stage of your education, an apprenticeship, or work. As you know, I too am leaving RCCS. I'd like to thank you for helping to make my final year such an enjoyable one, and for achieving this final set of results which I will also enjoy celebrating as your head teacher for the last time!

Y11 results which are not collected today will be posted home. Y10 results will be given out at the start of term.

UPDATE FROM THE ACTING HEADTEACHER

Monday 12th June 2023

Hello everyone,

I hope that you and your families are well and that you have enjoyed this period of warm and sunny weather. I was fortunate to be able to spend some time in west Wales during the half term and the fine weather really does make a difference. Despite the sunshine, temperatures have not been extreme, so we have been expecting the pupils to be wearing the normal school uniform. However, with a slight increase in temperature due next week we are allowing pupils (and staff) to go without ties and to have the top button of their shirt undone. Please support us by ensuring that all pupils continue adhere to the rest of the school uniform policy.

It was good to have a message from Mr Kendall last week sharing that his operation had gone well and that recovery is under way. We have been in regular contact before and since the operation and are hopeful that he will indeed be able to come into school before the end of the term. As always he passes on his best wishes, and in particular to those taking part in exams. We have little over a week remaining until the final exam this year, so keep going and best of luck for the final few!

I have also been in regular contact with Mr Hulland, who will be our new headteacher in September. As you would expect he is keen to make a few minor changes and to make the role his own. We will be sending further information out on this in due course, so keep an eye out on Class Charts and the rest of our usual communication channels.

Best regards,.

A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM MR KENDALL

Tuesday 6th June 2023

Hello everyone,

I hope you are keeping well. Just a very quick update from me to confirm that I had the operation on 25th May and came out of hospital five days later. Recovery and recuperation is going to take quite some time so I am not able to commit to any return to school at this point, though I am keen to see the pupils and my colleagues again before the end of term if I possibly can.

I want to pay tribute to the NHS. The care and treatment I received throughout has been outstanding. As a school we have a number of former pupils who now work in the health service, and many parents and carers do as well, and I know some current students may pursue a career in this area. You have my utmost gratitude and respect.

Take care,

John Kendall

UPDATE FROM THE ACTING HEADTEACHER

19th May 2023

It is difficult to believe that a week has passed since I last sat down to compose the weekly message. Things are moving quickly now, with only a week until the final half term break of the school year and exam season is in full flow. I would like to pass on my thanks to all of the staff that enable the exams to run so smoothly. We have a small army of people who are involved in this process; invigilators, teaching assistants providing support, the caretaker arranging the rooms and of course our exams officer, Mrs Pinheiro, who manages the whole process. It really is a team effort.

I'd like to clarify the position with Y11. There is no official 'last day' for them. We have had our shirt signing and final Y11 assembly (an emotional event!) and the pupils are required to attend school when they have lessons for which they still have examinations - and these lessons can make all the difference. Other lessons can be used for revision in school if transport is a problem. Pupils also need to attend when they have an exam, obviously, and they need to be on time, in uniform, and well prepared! Timetables have already been issued and you can find a copy on our Qualifications page HERE.

Sticking with the exams, I need to remind pupils and parents that all electronic devices must be switched off and left in pupils' bags during exams. Most of us rely on our mobile phones these days, but it is always heartbreaking for us when a pupil is found to have a mobile phone, or other device, on their person while sitting an exam, as we are duty bound to report it - and this often leads to exam papers being cancelled. Please double check before all exams.

More widely across the school, the entries for the Spirited Arts competition are coming in fast - and it's not too late to get your entries in to the RE department.

We've also had a good week for our rugby teams, with the Y9 girls performing well in a multi-school tournament and the Y10 boys racking up a big win.

Best regards,

Jamie Oliver

UPDATE FROM THE ACTING HEADTEACHER

12th May 2023

As you will be aware from Mr Kendall's previous message, I am currently looking after the school in his absence until our new headteacher, Mr Hulland, starts with us in September. I am really looking forward to working with the Risca community to support our pupils over the next few months - and in particular our Y11 pupils who have their exams starting today and will be leaving us soon to continue their journeys. We also have 'real' exams for pupils in Y10, so it really is an important time for our senior pupils.

I visited Mr Kendall in hospital earlier in the week. He wanted me to thank you for your kind messages and to tell you that he is being very well looked after prior to his operation. He was especially keen to pass on his best wishes and to say good luck to our pupils and their families for the upcoming GCSE exams.

The exams timetable is available on the 'Qualifications' page of this website and there is a range of exam related information and links to revision resources on the 'Learning' page.

A PERSONAL MESSAGE FROM MR KENDALL

To our pupils, parents and carers, and the wider RCCS community

Hello everyone,

I want to make you all aware that I have recently had some challenging health issues and that I am going to be off school with immediate effect for an operation, after which the recovery period is liable to be quite lengthy. Mr Oliver will be the acting headteacher in my absence, and the LEA will be providing extra support to the school which will be in safe hands.

Of course this is not what I had expected in my last term before retirement. My colleagues here have been aware for some time and they have been incredibly supportive, as have governors and LEA colleagues and I would like to express my gratitude to them as this has made a huge difference to me.

Thank you for your understanding.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 24

28th April 2023

Today is the last day for one of our teaching assistants, Mike Bender, who is retiring after many years working at the school. Mike joined RCCS after a long career in industry and he has had a huge impact on the lives of many young people. He has worked as a learning coach and most recently in the area of numeracy, but the support he has given has gone well beyond the academic. Mike has not been well these last few weeks, and his stoicism during this period of illness has been remarkable and inspirational. We wish him many happy years of retirement and thank him for the outstanding service he has given. He is also celebrating his birthday today, so "Happy Birthday, Mike!"

As you know, next Monday is a Bank Holiday. The school is also closed to pupils on Tuesday as it is a training day for staff and we are taking the opportunity to visit other schools and educational institutions. This is always an effective way of improving our practice and we are grateful to all those colleagues who are hosting.

Exams are already underway for Y11, and they will be coming thick and fast over the next few weeks. To balance this out, they do have the Prom to look forward to when all is over! Can I remind you the exam timetable is in the Qualifications section and there is advice and guidance about exams in both the Pupil and Parent sections of this website.

The new curriculum has been in place for Y7 since September and we have been evaluating how things have been going through a number of activities including, of course, getting feedback from the pupils themselves. So far it is a positive picture, and plans are well in hand for Y8 for the new school year.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 23

21st April 2023

I hope everyone had a relaxing Easter break. The term ahead is a long one, so let me start by giving you some key dates. We have two Bank Holiday Mondays coming up soon, on May 1st and also on May 8th which is an extra one for the coronation. We also have two more teacher training days scheduled for this term when no pupils should be in school: Tuesday May 2nd and Friday 30th June. Half term is the week beginning Monday May 29th and the last day of term is Friday 21st July. This is a crucial term for Y11 and you can see the GCSE timetable on the Qualifications Section of our website. For those with pupils in Y6 joining us next September, the Parents' Evening is on June 28th and the children will spend the day in school on the 29th.

March was a very wet month, but now the weather has improved the redecoration of the exterior of the school has resumed and it is already looking a lot smarter. Those of you with long memories will remember the original bare blocks; these were painted some years ago in an orange/peach colour, but we are now going for a two tone approach, with charcoal grey at the base and a light beige for the top half. I tweeted a picture of progress so far earlier in the week.

The summer term is always a good one for sport and we are lucky to have great facilities outside as well as indoors. We are still having issues with dog fouling on the playing fields however, and continue to work with the local authority as this creates a serious health hazard.

I thought I would mention something which is not linked to school, but I am not sure how widely publicised it has been. There's going to be a national test of the UK’s new Emergency Alerts system on Sunday 23 April at 3pm. The test alert will be sent to most mobile phones across the UK and your devices will make a distinct, siren-like sound for up to 10 seconds, including phones switched to silent mode. The Emergency Alert is a UK government service that will warn you if there’s a danger to life nearby, such as in the event of a major flooding incident. The test is scheduled for 3pm but the broadcast window may be active until 4pm (phones will only receive the alert once during this time. Phones will also vibrate and display a message about the test. It is posible this may cause anxiety for elderly or vulnerable people, and it may be that some may want to ensure their phone is turned off. You can find out more on the government website here

My assembly- one of my last- this week was about empathy and values. As the hall was out of use this was pre-recorded and you can access the presentation below.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 22

24th March 2023

This is the final message this term as we break up for Easter next Friday. It's been a busy few weeks and I hope people enjoy a good break when it comes. Y11 need to set some time aside for revision over the fortnight, however, as the exams are now looming. There is quite a lot of guidance in the pupil section of this website and parents can access a support guide HERE.  The examination timetable has already been published and you can find a copy under the qualifications tab.

I hope people will be able to join the Walkies for Autism we mentioned last week, it's taking place this Sunday at Cwmcarn Forest, 10.45 start. This is the first event to mark Autism Acceptance Week and there are other things going on, including special assemblies, over the next five days

Yesterday was Covid Reflection Day and we held a minute of silence to remember all those we lost during the Covid pandemic, to reflect on how our school worked so hard throughout those difficult times, and to mark the work of the NHS and other key workers, both then and now.

Can I please ask parents to support in ensuring their children come to school on time? They should arrive anytime after 8.35, but need to be in their homerooms by 8.50. I know there have been some unavoidable issues with a service bus which we do understand. Can I also take the opportunity to remind you of the school uniform. We have a very straightforward uniform code, and our uniform meets all Welsh Government criteria. You can access the uniform list HERE

A number of our pupils attended the Disability Six Nations Rugby Festival at Ystrad Mynach on Thursday. Everyone had a great time! Thanks to all the staff involved both from RCCS and at the event itself.

Finally I am delighted to confirm that a new head teacher has been appointed! Mr Martin Hulland will take up his appointment in September, and I am looking forward to catching up with him next term.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 21

17th March 2023

As the industrial action was called off we have had a full week in school. On Tuesday evening we held the parents' evening for Y7, and this was very well attended. Thanks to all who came in, the vast majority heard good news about the progress of their child!

Yesterday and today the Governors have been running the selection process for the new headteacher and we will soon know who will be taking over in September- exciting times!

There have been lots of sporting events taking place recently. The best way of keeping up with these is on Twitter, especially if you follow @RCCS_MrsPerry and @RCCS_Rugby. I am so pleased how this aspect of the school's work has developed over recent years as we get back on our feet after the Covid pandemic. It's also good to see former pupils being selected to play for teams, from local up to national level.

We are organising another walk to raise funds for our Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) Centre. The Walkies for Autism takes place on Sunday 26th March. It's World Autism Acceptance week starting on the 27th (the week after next) and Mrs D Howells will be doing special assemblies to explain more about Autism. We are very proud to host the Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) Centre here, they do an amazing job and pupils make outstanding progress.

Finally a reminder that term ends on Friday 31st March and the summer term begins on Monday April 17th. You can see the school calendar overview HERE.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 20

10th March 2023

I'd like to thank the community for their understanding in terms of the school closure this week. We do try to get the information out as early as we can, and it is nice to know this is appreciated. We are hoping that's it now  for the year, as someone said to me, 'the last snow day of your career!' I think over the fourteen years I have been here we have had about 15-20 snow days, usually one-offs, but one year I think we were closed for three or  four days in a row. Richard our caretaker always does a good job keeping paths and driveways salted or gritted.

We held the Y10 parents' evening last night, and yesterday too the pupils had their English Literature results and there were some really good performance, so well done everyone!

The interviews for the new head teacher are taking place next week. This is- quite rightly- the only appointment we make in the school that I do not get involved with, so I wish the panel and the candidates all the best with the process and I look forward to seeing who will be the lucky person who gets what I consider to be the best job ever!

Our safeguarding lead, Mr Canavan, has made me aware of some useful resources that parents may want to check out, on the Hwb website. This collection of guides provides parents and carers with key information about the most popular social media and gaming apps children and young people are using today. The guides include a detailed overview of the app, outlining the age rating and key terminology. They also highlight the risks each app poses to young people and give detailed instructions on how to enable parental controls and safety settings. This guide can also help parents and carers have a conversation with their child about a sensitive issue. You can follow the link HERE.

FInally, many congratulations to one of our school engagement officers , Shelly Reader, who gave birth to a beautiful girl, Lottie, earlier this week. Mother and baby are both doing very well!

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 19

3rd March 2023

We were all deeply saddened to learn of the death of our colleague, Cath Parton, over the half term. Cath had worked here as a teaching assistant for many years and she was a much respected member of our community. She made a huge impact on the children she supported, and many lives have been improved and enriched by her guidance and help over the years. Cath had a keen sense of humour, and it was inevitable given her surname 'Parton' that she was affectionately known by many here as 'Dolly' after the Country and Western singer, something I think she also found rather amusing! Our thoughts are of course with her family and friends at this very sad time.

As you know, school was closed to pupils on Thursday. I need to advise you that this is likely to be the case too on Wednesday 15th and Thursday 16th March as industrial action is also scheduled for these dates, but I will ensure you are kept up to date if there are any changes.

We have two parents' evenings coming up, Y10 on Thursday 9th and Y7 on Tuesday 14th. I hope you are able to attend if you have children in these year groups.

Over the next couple of weeks we are conducting a teaching and learning review in our school. This will involve watching each other's lessons and sharing strategies for improvement, talking with pupils and looking at their work, and also talking with staff. These reviews are an important part of our work here at RCCS and are used to inform our practice moving forward.

On Wednesday we were visited by a moderator who was here to look at the practical performance of our GCSE PE students. I understand this went very well- congratulations to all involved.

We are seeking to appoint someone as an HLTA to help support some of our more vulnerable pupils. Please see under the vacancy tab on this website for more information.

UPDATE FROM THE HEADTEACHER

16th February 2023

ADVANCE NOTICE OF INDUSTRIAL ACTION

2nd March 2023: School closed to pupils

You may have seen in the media that on Thursday 2nd March a number of teachers and other school staff across Wales are taking industrial action in the form of a strike. Following a risk assessment and consultation with the Chair of Governors I have decided that the school will be closed to pupils on this day as we will not be in a position to open safely given the numbers of people who will be involved. Students can find links to various learning resources on this website.

Should any change occur between now and this date, which is the Thursday after half term, I will of course let you know.

Please be aware that similar action has been planned for the 15th and 16th March, and at the moment it looks likely the same arrangements will be in place on those days as on the 2nd March

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 17

3rd February 2023

It was lovely  to welcome a group of prospective candidates for the headship to RCCS on Tuesday. This was an opportunity for them to have a good look around the school and to pose any questions they wanted to governors and senior staff. The selection process has been extended, and the governors are hoping to have the appointment completed now in March.

We held our Options Evening on Tuesday. This was a successful event but a very busy one and the hall was not big enough to accommodate everyone. Going forward we are, I think, going to have to do what many other schools do and limit attendance at such events to the pupil and one parent or carer. All information about options can be found in the Curriculum section of this website.

We have been spending quite a bit of time in Y7 classes, looking at Y7 books, and talking with the pupils. Broadly speaking I am very pleased with what we have learnt through this process. Overall  they are reporting a very positive experience in and out of lessons, and the progress we are seeing in classes is pleasing. They are a credit to their former schools. Remember, this is the first group experiencing the new curriculum and feedback we've had on this aspect of our work has been good.

Yesterday afternoon we held a meeting of the Governors' Standards Committee. This group scrutinises school performance, not just the data but other evidence as well, and plays an important part in our quality assurance processes.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 16

27th January 2023

We contacted parents on Thursday with an important message about the school closure to pupils on Wednesday next week. If you missed it please scroll down to the yellow section below. I felt it was important to share this information as soon as possible rather than wait for today's weekly message. I am now also able to confirm that families whose children are entitled to free school meals will receive a voucher for that day.

On Tuesday next week we are holding the Year Nine options evening. I would encourage all Y9 parents and pupils to attend if possible, to help them make informed choices about their options for next year.

This week the Science Faculty organised a visit by a Y4 medical student from Cardiff University  who spoke with some of our senior pupils who are interested in working in this sector in the future. This was very well received and being able to talk to someone going through the training was very helpful indeed. Next week they have organised some workshops on Energy with Y9 which should be really interesting.

There was some vandalism in one of the girls' toilets on Wednesday. This is being investigated and those responsible will be held to account. I understand there was some concern in the community that there may have been asbestos in the damaged ceiling tiles but I can confirm this is not the case; indeed these facilities were only refurbished quite recently. The school takes this very seriously; not only is there a cost implication for repairs which needs to be paid from the school's limited budget, but it reduces the facilities available to pupils whilst these repairs are affected. Pupils who vandalise the school site in any way or anyone who gets involved with such behaviour can expect to be excluded for a fixed term, or even permanently, and parents or carers may be asked to contribute to the cost of making good any damage.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 15

20th January 2023

We woke up to snow showers on Wednesday but thanks to the great efforts of our caretaker, Richard, the site was safe and we were able to open as usual as we have for the rest of this  week.

You may have heard news of strike action by teachers in Wales. I am not yet certain of the implications of this for RCCS but as soon as I am able to I shall let you know so you can make any necessary arrangements.

On Thursday an engineer working on the fire alarm system inadvertently set it off. We used this as an opportunity for an unprepared fire practice and I am pleased to say the building was evacuated in a timely and efficient way.

I have written before about social media accounts. The school has an officlal Facebook page, a YouTube channel, and a Twitter account. Some staff also have school Twitter accounts. We don't use any other websites apart form these and this, our official school one.  Clearly it is possible to set up fake accounts on all these platforms, and on others such as Instagram and TikTok. These  can be harmless, but they can also be harmful, and in any event it is against the law to impersonate a person or an organisation. It is usually fairly obvious when these fake accounts surface, as they do from time to time, and when the school is aware of any serious inappropriate or malicious post, then action is taken, and on a small number of occasions the Police are involved. Parents can access a useful guide to TikTok here. We do a lot of work in school in terms of internet safety and appropriate use, but we also rely heavily on parents to monitor their children.

Good luck to Year Eleven who are embarking on their ten week GCSE Art project. This forms 40% of their final grade so needs to be be taken seriously! All parents should have received details in a letter this week.

All the teacher training days have now been allocated. If you printed off a copy of the calendar earlier in the year the 2nd May may not have been added at that point (it's the day after the Bank Holiday.) You can access the final version here.

We held a very positive meeting of the Finance Committee of the Governing Body yesterday, and we have a full Governors' meeting on Monday next week at which we will be sharing our progress against the current school action plan.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 14

13th January 2023

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a good Christmas break. Term began on Monday 9th January, and it's going to be a busy one.

On Tuesday we welcomed Y9 parents to school to meet with their child's teachers. This is an important time for these pupils as they will soon be making choices about their options for the next couple of years. You can find all the information you need regarding this process under the curriculum tab on this website.

Well done to Year Ten who took a GCSE exam in English Literature on Wednesday. They and their teachers have worked hard on this and I hope they are rewarded when the results come out later in the year.

We are going to extend the deadline for Parent Governor application until the end of this month, so if you are interested please have a look in the Governors' section which you can access here.

Rugby continues to go from strength to strength at RCCS following the appointment of our Hub officer last year, and I know this is also having an impact in the community which is great to know. Bad luck to Y11 boys who lost the semi-final to Lewis Pengam on Wednesday, I heard it was an excellent and well fought game.  Unfortunately the year ten game yesterday had to be called off due to a waterlogged pitch. If you follow @RCCS_Rugby on Twitter you can access lots of information about upcoming training and fixtures, as well as viewing photos and videos of some of the action!

The weather has been awful almost all week, but it has been a good test for the new roof which I am happy to say has held up well!

Finally, I can confirm that the arrangements for the appointment of the next headteacher are underway and the Governors are hoping to complete the selection process by the end of this month.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 13

16th December 2022

Term ends on Thursday 22nd December- one of the latests dates I can remember for this to happen! This will be a non-uniform day and people are invited to wear Christmas jumpers if they wish. The new term starts on Monday January 9th- this will be a timetable week two.

Caerphilly have asked me to let you know that there has been an error on the Free School Meal Holiday Payment letters.  You will notice that the claim deadline is 5th December 2022, however this is incorrect, and claims can be made until 31st January 2023.  Should you have any issues with your claim, please email fsmholidaypayments@caerphilly.gov.uk or call 01443 864055, and provide them with your name, address and the post office you took your letter to.

Y10 are taking their GCSE English Literature GCSE exam on 11th January, the Wednesday of the week we come back. The English department has been working hard to get them ready for this, and it's worth 35% of the final grade so some revision in the final week of the holiday would be advisable!

As you know the Christmas Concert had to be cancelled as a live event, but a video was made instead. Well done to all staff and pupils involved. The video should be available early next week.

I would like to say a big thank you to all the staff in school who have ensured we have remained open in spite of very heavy absence. On a couple of occasions we have been close to having to send a year group home. We have also been lucky to secure supply teachers who have also done a great job. Thank you all!

My Christmas assembly for next week is in video format as the hall is unavailable due to exams. It's based on the carol Good King Wenceslas and you can find the link below.

There will be no update next week, so it just remains for me to wish you and your families, for the last time as retirement approaches next summer, a very merry Christmas and a happy new year!

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 11

2nd December 2022

The Welsh Government is currently reviewing its guidance on school attendance and is keen to include the views of parents and carers in this work. Working with Parentkind, they would like to hear from any parents and carers with a child who currently has, or has previously had issues with poor attendance so that they can better support young people. Please click HERE to get involved.

Exams start with practicals for Y11 next week, and then the written exams follow after that. Other assessments are already underway. You can find all the information you need about the timetable and revision sessions under the QUALIFICATIONS section on this website, and useful guidance about how to tackle exams in the PUPILS section. Good luck to all of you!

The coronavirus seems to be quite virulent at the moment and I tested positive myself earlier in the week, so I have been away from school. It is quite debilitating. There is also quite a bit of 'flu about, and attendance in school has been quite low. Yet again, it has been difficult for us to get supply staff to cover teacher illness, and in an extreme case we may need to ask some students to work from home. If this is necessary, or if the school has to be closed due to snow, for example, work can be accessed from the LEARNING section on this website.

As you know, the Estyn reports were published on Monday and I hope you have had a chance to read them. If you have any questions about anything mentioned, please get in touch with us.

I am looking forward to the Christmas Concert! This is being held on the 14th December at the school, and all are welcome. Thanks to Mrs Pearce who is organising this, and good luck to all those performing.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 10

25th November 2022

Today those who want to will have the opportunity to watch the World Cup game against Iran. After the draw with the USA on Monday this looks like it is a must win game. There is then one final game  against England next Tuesday which does not take place in school time, and subsequent matches are in the evenings or at weekends, I believe, so should not affect lessons.

Well done to all pupils who put together shoe boxes full of things for the Operation Christmas Child charity organized by the RE department. I'd also like to congratulate the pupils who were selected to be RE ambassadors. They have a key role to play in this area of the school

The Estyn report for the school following September's visit will be published on Monday, and this now includes a summary for parents and carers. This will be made available on our website together with the full report under the Estyn tab. There are  a number of recommendations which we will be working on over the next months. Indeed, we have already started to address some of the issues mentioned as we had identified these areas before the visit. We will keep you updated on our progress.

It was great to see several of last year's leavers at a celebration event on Wednesday evening. They and their families were heavily impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, and showed great resilience to achieve what they did during their time at RCCS, culminating in some very pleasing examination results. We are very proud of them.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 09

18th November 2022

On Monday we had a visit from a former pupil who is now working as a barrister. She spoke to pupils in Y10 and 11 who are considering following a career in the law. It was a really interesting discussion and she even let some of them try on the wig and gown! Having ex pupils return like this is brilliant and I hope we can start doing more of this again as we used to before Covid struck.

Well done to the Y11 who set up a Scare Maze in the Drama Room this week! It was just too late for Halloween but it still proved remarkably popular and scary, as well as being a useful fund-raiser for Prom!

As well as watching the World Cup game v Iran in school next Friday we have also designated this a non-uniform  day so pupils can show their support for Wales by wearing red, a football shirt or maybe even a bucket hat. I know many in our community have concerns over human rights in Qatar and in Iran, and they can express their support too, for example to support LGBTQ rights by wearing rainbow colours. With so many watching the game across the country I hope the broadband holds up.

Pupils from the ASC Centre have been visiting Coleg Gwent to look at Y12 courses there and also at possible career opportunities. The links we have with the college are very strong and this definitely helps make these transition events even better. I know staff were also pleased to see some familiar faces there, former RCCS pupils now studying at Crosskeys!

It seems likely the painting of the exterior of the school may need to be put on hold until the Spring. This is unfortunate, but it will be done before the summer, and the building will look so much better when it is finished.

Well done to Evie and Tommy from Year Eight who did so well at the Armistice Service last week, and to all our pupils involved in other events over the remembrance weekend

Mock exams are soon to be upon us for Y11. This time last year and in the preceding year there was a huge amount of uncertainty due to the pandemic, but things are much more settled and certain this year. Homeroom tutors will be guiding the pupils through revision advice and teachers are working hard to prepare them for the papers. The exam timetable will be made available through the classcharts app and you can access more revision help here.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 08

11th November 2022

It was good to see everyone back safe and well after the Halloween/Bonfire Night week. I hope you all had a good break and feel refreshed for the second half of term

This week I have been holding assemblies on the theme of Remembrance. This is a subject I feel strongly about as I believe this is a very important tradition which we must maintain. We will be holding a two minute silence at 11.00 am today, and later I will be attending the Armistice service at the Moriah Church with Mrs Madden and some Year Eight pupils who will be reading poetry. I will be sharing stories from the logbooks we have in school, in which former headteachers recorded things connected with school, and the ones I will be talking about relate to the first world war.

Did you see all the coverage we got during half term on the TV, radio, and in the newspapers? Miss Johnston tweeted an inspirational speech made by Louis, one of her pupils in Y7, which was part of an activity they were doing based on the rousing speech Michael Sheen made to the Welsh men's football team. Well, Michael himself saw the tweet and retweeted it with a lovely comment! Last time I looked it had well over 50,000 views ! You can see it here!

Talking of the World Cup, we are planning on letting those pupils who wish to do so watch the one game that is on during school time, it's against Iran on Friday 25th November at 10.00 am. Obviously we will make alternative arrangements for those who don't want to see the game.

Next week we have a parents' evening for Y8. Invitations have already gone out. We have gone back to holding these in person as we feel this is more effective and it is also the preferred approach according to our parental surveys.

Finally we have sent emails to parents of last year's leavers inviting them to a Celebration Evening on Wednesday 23rd November at 5pm. If for some reason you did not receive an invite please get in touch with us as we are keen to see as many of you as possible!

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 07

21st October 2022

Although Covid has sadly not gone away we are no longer under the restrictions which curtailed our activities last year, and the Y11 Geography field trip took place last week. This was a great success, enjoyed by all, and an important part of the course, so I was really pleased to hear it had gone so well.

Most people will be aware of the great increase in rugby activity here following the appointment of a WRU Hub officer. This has been so good to see. The pitches are getting lots more use, but unfortunately this has highlighted an issue with dog walkers allowing their dogs to foul the playing fields. Most are very sensible and always tidy up afterwards, but there must be a small number who do not. If you have any information about this please let us know. Meanwhile we are trying to sort out additional signage and waste bins to be installed.

The School Parliament will be sitting for the first time shortly and I hope to be able to share their views in an update after the break.

We currently have vacancies in the school which may be of interest to people in our wider community. We are looking to appoint a Laboratory Technician (this is a re-advertisement) and an Admin Assistant. You can find further information on the vacancies page.

There will be no update next week as it is half-term; remember the Friday is a training day, so no pupils in school that day. Please take care over Halloween and Bonfire Night and we will see everyone back here safe and well on Monday 7th November.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 06

14th October 2022

One of our newest extra-curricular clubs is the Board Games Club run by drama teacher Miss Grist. I heard some great news earlier this week that three Year Nine had managed to get the school into the "Warhammer Alliance" program and in the process had secured about £100 of equipment! Anyone interested in joining the club should go along to the drama studio on Tuesdays after school- all welcome.

Congratulations to Y9 student Mollie Edwards who has won this year's Spirited Arts Competition! This is run nationwide by the National Association of Teachers of Religious Education, and Miss John encouraged her to enter.  There were over 3,000 applicants and she was one of five, who won in her category. She created a stunning art piece on equality, prejudice and discrimination.  Click here to see her awesome work. The colours and design are amazing and the message is such an important one. Well done Mollie!

We have taken quite a hit with staff absence recently due in part to a resurgence of Covid. I need to tell you that it is possible we may have to limit pupil attendance if this gets worse as we may not have anough staff to cover all classes. We will always try to give you notice and work is provided online for pupils if they are unable to come to school.

Finally a reminder that half term begins for pupils at 3.00pm on Thursday 27th October as the Friday is a training day for staff. Term resumes on Monday 7th November, by which time I am hoping all the site work will be completed.

Next week we have our first parents’ meeting of the year, which is for Y11, on Thursday evening. It will be a face to face meeting rather than online, and I hope as many parents as possible are able to attend to receive an update on their child’s progress and advice about how they can make improvements. You should already have received information about this. Other parents' evenings are scheduled throughout the year, and you can see the full timetable here. Y11 attended a Careers Fair on Thursday which I know many found useful.

We are planning to welcome our Y11 from last year to join us here in school to celebrate their success in last year’s exams. The date for this is provisionally set for Wednesday 23rd November at 5pm, and we hope as many people as possible will be able to attend. It will be great to see you again! You will receive more information later this month or in early November but please keep the date free if you can!

All schools are working hard to get attendance as good as it can be. Please see this letter from Dr Paul Warren, the strategic lead for school improvement in CCBC.

We have delayed our Open Evening for new parents this year to the Spring due to the extensive work taking place on the school site. More information will follow in the new year.

Two years ago I shared with my senior colleagues that it was my intention to retire when I reached my sixtieth birthday in August 2023. Last December I also shared this with the senior governors and senior officers of the LEA. I had planned to confirm this in December of this year and to let the community know in January 2023. The recent inspection has quite rightly left us with some  recommendations and work to do, which will certainly not be completed by August of next year. Altering my plans and remaining beyond August to see things through was my immediate reaction as a professional: in some ways it seemed the right thing to do.

However, one can never be certain of when things will be done to one’s full satisfaction, and I can also certainly see advantages in new blood coming into the school to support the improvement journey. I have therefore decided to stick with my original decision, and I shall be retiring in August after fourteen years at Risca. Most of the children in the school today were not even born when I took on this role in a community that has become very special to me.

I have decided to make this decision known early, so a recruitment process can begin, and an appointment made. This will allow for a smooth transition from me to my successor, and it may even allow us the opportunity to work together for a short while prior to my leaving. Before then I want to assure you that my professional focus remains totally on our school, and specifically on tackling the useful recommendations from HMI Estyn, to ensure the school is left in the best possible place for the new headteacher to work with you all to secure and celebrate the improvement we all want.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 04

30th September 2022

Just a brief message this week, which has been a busy one with visitors from Estyn in school. Today it the last day they are with us but we will not be able to share their report until late November when it is published. I'd like to thank them and everyone who was involved in the activities this week. It has been a productive and useful experience and we are looking forward to addressing the recommendations we have received.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 03

23rd September 2022

I have been visiting a number of lessons this week, especially in Y7, and it is good to see how well they have settled into their new school. I have also been to 'homeroom' sessions. 'Homeroom' is what we call registration, as this part of the day is much more than signing in, and the tutors do much more that just take a register. On Thursday when I visited the pupils were doing a meditation activity and were really well engaged

Mr Lloyd is in charge of the School Parliament and we will soon be holding the first meeting after the elections. This is an important group which provides the governors and leaders of the school with useful information from the student body. The feedback they provide ranges from which charities we should support this year, to the school uniform, to the curriculum. Key players in this group are the prefects. They also have special responsibilities looking after and mentoring the Y7, and I am grateful to them for their input and support in this area.

I'd like to remind parents that the correct place for dropping off and collecting pupils is by the Leisure Centre and not at the front of the school. We have a high profile staff presence at the start and the end of the day, but while people continue to park on double yellow lines by the entrance, the risk of accident is still high. Enforcement officers will be in the vicinity so I would urge people to respect the correct procedures.

Pupils from the ASC and ALN departments of the school took part in a disability rugby event on Thursday of this week and had a great time. You can see some of the pictures on Twitter. I can also report the first win of the season for our new Y7 team- well done all of you!

We have visitors from Estyn in next week as you know, and we are looking forward to sharing the progress we have made, and to talking through our school priorities for this year- you can see an overview of those under the 'Parents and Carers' tab here.

Next week is the last week at RCCS for Mr Bold, our science lab technician. Damien is one of those staff members who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure teachers can deliver the lessons they want, and I'd like to thank him for all he has done and to wish him well for the future.

Finally a further update on the roofing! This job is nearing completion and the scaffolding should be down within the next couple of weeks.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 02

16th September 2022

Monday will be a Bank Holiday in the UK, and schools, including ours, will be closed, in order to mark the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This will be an historic occasion and I would urge pupils to watch the proceedings on TV if they can. The Queen's association with our school is well known. Flags have been flying at half mast here; they will be raised again after the funeral.

We completed a successful practice evacuation of the school on Tuesday. This was completed in a very good time and in an orderly manner, and the pupils must be commended for this, as some of the routes out have been adjusted to make allowances for the building work.

We are hoping to increase the number of extra-curricular visits we organise during the new academic year now that the restrictions of Covid have, at least for now, been lifted. Please could we ask parents and carers to complete this form so we can be sure we have the appropriate permissions? It will only take a minute. Thanks.

Work continues on the roof of the school. I can tell you that we have also had new fire doors fitted inside, and other refurbishments have also been completed in a couple of water damaged classrooms and in R3, our assembly room.

Our first rugby fixture, Y8 v Blackwood CS took place yesterday. The boys and girls played really well and there was a good few people who came out to watch. Every one of the twenty strong squad got on, and there were some outstanding performances. We lost by a converted try in the end. On Tuesday Miss Edmunds took a group of girls to watch the Wales women's open training session and they really enjoyed that. The best way of keeping up with rugby and other sport is to follow the dedicated twitter feed, @RCCS_Rugby. All the RCCS PE teachers also have Twitter accounts and they are very good at providing updates on a regular basis about team and individual successes and events.

Another very active Twitter account is run by Mrs D Howells who is the head of our Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC) Centre, and you can see all her updates at @RCCS_ASC. The ASC allotment has produced some great vegetables over the summer including some of the most enormous pumpkins I have ever seen!

Finally I hope you are aware we will have a visit from Estyn, the school inspection service, in the week beginning Monday 26th September. You can find more information HERE. This was sent to all parents and carers earlier in the week. Many of our visitors are HMI, and I was reflecting that whilst we were the first comprehensive school in Wales to be opened by the Queen, we will now be the first to be inspected by His Majesty's inspectors.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 01

9th September 2022

This was my thirty-fifth start to a school year as a teacher and my fourteenth as head teacher of our school and I think it was the most anxious one I have known! As most of you know, we are having some important work done on the roof of the school. I don't need to bore you with details but there have been one or two problems along the way- no one's fault I hasten to add. The contractors have been excellent in trying to sort things out, and we were open to Year Seven on Monday, using the Technology Building only. On Monday night we had a terrific thunderstorm but the roof held up and we were able to open to everyone, which was a great relief.

You may have seen from a previous post that the GCSE results achieved by our Y11 were really good this year, and I was so pleased for them as they have had such a disrupted time due to the coronavirus. Let's hope this year we are able to function without restraints caused by this.

I want to thank parents and carers for how they have supported the return to school, or in the case of our new pupils, the start of a new chapter in their education. Attendance, punctuality and uniform are three aspects of school life that are very much a joint effort between us, and so far I have been very pleased, so thank you for your support. We are proud of our uniform which is gender neutral and importantly logo-free, and therefore affordable. You may have seen articles in the media about the issue of costly school uniforms. I am so pleased our community decided to take the approach we did a few years ago. If anyone has any problems providing the right uniform please get in touch and we will do our best to help.

Our new rugby hub office Mr Allen held the first training session for Y7 on Thursday and I went down to see how they were getting on. I was very impressed! We are looking to develop rugby for girls and boys at RCCS and the appointment of this new post is an important part of that plan.

For those not familiar with the school we provide an update every Friday in term time to the community and we post it on Twitter and Facebook as well as sending a link to parents and carers via text message. Please note we can rarely respond to messages and DMs sent on social media, so we ask you use email if you have any concerns. The new school address is riscacomprehensive@sch.caerphilly.gov.uk and your message can then be forwarded to the appropriate person.

GCSE RESULTS 2022

Many congratulations to our students on your GCSE results and the other qualifications you have gained this year! As you know, you were the first group to have taken examinations since Covid hit us; the way you managed this and handled the situation was superb and I am so pleased you have been rewarded with the success you deserve! This reflects your hard work during your time at RCCS and indeed at your Primary school before that, not just your final two years which of course have been very challenging. Your resilience and positive attitude certainly paid off.  Your teachers are delighted and I want to thank them and all the staff at our school for their dedication and hard work: it has been well rewarded!

I hope all of you are now in a position to pursue the next stage of your education, an apprenticeship, or work.

Y11 results which were not collected today have been posted home. Y10 results will be given out at the start of term.

On behalf of everyone at RCCS I would like to wish all our leavers the very best for the future. Keep in touch, stay safe. We are hoping to host a celebration of your achievement later in the year, so I hope to see you then.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 33

15th July 2022

We welcomed new staff to school for a special induction day on Tuesday. Dr O'Keeffe and Mrs Brown are joining us in Science, Miss Williams in Expressive Arts, Mr McMahon in IT, and Mrs Purnell in English. I am also pleased to confirm we have appointed a new Technology teacher, Miss Morgan. Joining the team too are three teaching assistants, Mrs Jenkins, Mr Carter, and Miss R Lewis, and our new WRU rugby hub officer, Mr Allen. An exciting year ahead!

Leaving us this year are two of our scientists, Mrs Baskerville and Mr Hare. They have done a great job in developing Science across the school and have engaged fully with extra curricular activities such as rocket club and Lego. Both have earned well-deserved promotions in other schools. Ms Bish, our Head of Technology, is also leaving after many years work at RCCS. She has overseen the transformation of the curriculum in her area and been a committed, diligent and well-respected teacher. Mr Cousins who has been working as a TA is leaving to pursue a teacher training course, inspired I hope by his time here with us! Finally, we are also saying goodbye to our longest serving member of staff, Mrs Newnes. Her career here started as a dinner lady under the very first head, Mr McKie, but for the last few years she has been working tirelessly in our ASC Centre. All of these colleagues have fully lived up to our school motto, 'making the difference' and whether retiring or moving on to an exciting new job we wish them all the very best for the future.

We held Sports Day in school on Wednesday. There was a great atmosphere, and lots of competition! The support the pupils gave each other was amazing and it was great to see participation from a number of staff, too! The results will be shared in a video presentation from Mrs Perry, with presentations in assemblies next week. Miss Grist has also prepared a video which I am looking forward to sharing!

I can confirm the roof is being replaced in the main school building over the summer holidays. This is a very big job and we need to start now in order to try to ensure all is ready for next term. The car park has already been partly cordoned off and the scaffolding will be going up this weekend; I can assure the community that all usual safety measures will be put in place.

I am sure you will have seen the Amber weather warning in place from Sunday to Tuesday in our area due to the extreme heat. External temperatures in the thirties can mean some of our classrooms hit temperatures in excess of forty degrees and can become unusable. We are putting in place some changes to allow us to avoid having to use these places during the latter part of the school day. We are also adding an additional break in the afternoon. Please ensure your child has a water bottle, and sunscreen and a hat if they are going outside or walking to and from school. If the weather warning is upgraded to Red, or if we receive different guidance from the Welsh Government, local authority, or NHS, we will of course let you know.

I am looking forward to assemblies next week, during which I will be presenting a number of certificates and awards. These will be held in the Sports Hall as it is much cooler than the usual room, R3.

We will very shortly be updating our curriculum page with the plans for the year ahead, and we will contact you next week when this is available.

This is the last full update for the year. I would like to finish by thanking everyone for their support over the last year, pupils, staff, parents and carers, and the wider community. I hope you all have a great summer holiday and I am looking forward to seeing you back on Tuesday, 6th September and seeing our new pupils here on Monday 5th.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 32

7th July 2022

We had our last Governors' meeting on Monday, and it was good to be able to share the progress the school has made over the year. The Governors' Report to parents has now been published and you can find it under the Governors' tab on this website. I am grateful to all the Governors for the support and challenge they bring to the school. We are lucky to have a full group and no vacancies, and on Wednesday I was able to show some new members of the team around the school.

There was a very successful Art trip to Llantarnam Grange on Wednesday and I know the Y10 GCSE group got a lot from it. Also that day some of our senior girls were involved in the national school athletics finals in Aberdare. At the time of writing I do not know the final outcome but I do know there were some excellent individual performances from our pupils.

On Tuesday evening we had our first face to face parents' evening for quite a while- it was with Y10. There were lots of good news stories, but one or two people will need to focus a little more sharply on the exams next year!

On Monday the headteachers of the Risca Cluster (us, Ty SIgn, Ty Isaf, Risca Primary and Waunfawr) gave a presentation to senior education colleagues in our area. We were pleased to be asked to share what we do together, and I think it was well received!

Yesterday Mr Mock went down to the Principality Stadium in Cardiff with some pupils as part of a WRU minecraft competition. I am delighted to confirm that we won the progression step 4 and 5 category! A very big well done to all those involved.

There are some changes to the school leadership next year. Miss Rouillé  will be Wellbeing Leader for Year 7 and Mr Knott will be in charge of Year 9. Mr Canavan has already taken over as Pastoral Support and Safeguarding officer. Mr Huggett will be Lead Teacher for Design Technology, and Mrs Pearce will be the Lead Teacher for Numeracy. Next week I will share with you the names of our staff to whom we will be saying a fond farewell, and those who will be joining us in September.

It's hot and it's getting hotter! We have had notice of extremely warm weather on the way. We have therefore decided that PE kit may be worn by pupils from next Monday, 11th July, in place of the normal uniform. If pupils prefer to wear uniform (this includes black school shorts as an option, remember) they will not be required to wear ties. They should not mix and match the uniform with the PE kit; it's either PE kit, or standard uniform. This relaxation of the uniform code applies until further notice as the hot weather is set to last.

Next week we have Sports Day on the 13th, so on that day all pupils must wear PE kit. We've not had a sports day for two years so we're looking forward to it very much!

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 31

1st July 2022

It has been a busy week. On Tuesday I visited our cluster primary schools with Mrs Coles and Miss Rouillé, who will be the Wellbeing Leader for Y7 next year. We took questions from the Y6 pupils. Then on Wednesday evening we welcomed parents and carers to the school to have a look around. The number of people who came up far exceeded what we were expecting! I have to say we had considered possibly limiting this session to one parent/carer only per pupil, but as a community school that did not seem the right thing to do. With hindsight, perhaps we should have done that, or organised things differently, and we will learn from this moving forward. I think the fact we were not able to hold Open Evenings over the last couple of years had a big impact on numbers attending. Thanks to everyone who came, though, and sorry if you did not get to see all you wanted. If you would like another visit please get in touch and we will organise something for you. Year Six then spent the day with us yesterday and everyone seemed to settle in quickly! Mrs Coles will be visiting Primary Schools to collect the completed forms next week. You can find key information in the parent/carer section of this website and contact details if you need to get in touch

The Year Eleven Prom took place later on Wednesday evening and was a great success. The pupils all looked incredible, and everyone had a really good time. Thanks to Mr Huggett and the Y 11 team for organising this.

Today, Friday, is a Professional Learning (PL) day for staff, so no pupils are in school. We received notification earlier this week that there will be an extra PL Day next year. We will look at where this is best placed in our calendar and let you know when this has been decided.

The new team of prefects was announced on Monday and they were given duties almost immediately, helping with the Y6 evening and transition day yesterday which they did admirably well.

Well done to our girls senior athletics team who came second in the county finals and have now qualified for the national finals in Aberdare next Wednesday. This is a fantastic achievement! Good luck next week!

I have been made aware of a programme by which parents of pupils on Free School Meals and certain other benefits can get water bills reduced. You can find out more by visiting their website, dwrcymru.com/HelpWIthBills

I have also been told of some community support for those looking for free employment training. Help is offered through the Risca Hub and you can attend at Risca Library every Thursday between 11.00 and 13.00. You can see more information here.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 30

24th June 2022

The GCSE exams are over! I'd like to thank the staff who have worked so hard to support these students through the challenging years of their secondary education, you have been amazing. I'd like to thank the parents and carers who have been so supportive of their children and the school during these disrupted years. But most of all I'd like to thank the pupils themselves who have been outstanding. Their resilience and commitment has been superb and I am sure this will be duly rewarded when the results come out. They can now relax and look forward to their Prom next week.

As well as the prom we have  a busy week with an evening for Y6 parents followed by the transition day- back again after a two year suspension due to Covid! If you are a new parent you can find out more on our transition website.

A reminder that next Friday 1st July is a Staff Professional Learning Day when we will be working on the new curriculum. No pupils should be in school. We then have just three weeks until the summer holidays!

Sports leaders have been visiting Primary Schools to support with events. This is an important part of our cluster work and colleagues have been generous in their praise for our students. Yesterday Mr Oliver and I interviewed candidate to be senior students/prefects, and the standard was extremely high; we hope to announce the team next week.

A group of students is visiting Crosskeys College for a day next week looking at coding drones! This sounds really interesting, and I am sure they will enjoy it!

I'd like to clarify the situation with regard to uniform in the hot weather. In normal circumstances when it gets warm the standard uniform should be worn, but do remember this includes black school shorts as an option rather than long trousers or skirt if this is preferred. These can in fact be worn all year round, but they must be plain black. When we get notification from the Met Office of extreme heat, we will text parents to say that PE kit may be worn all day, just as we did last Friday.

Prifathro/Head Teacher

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 29

17th June 2022

Communication with parents is so much easier now! When I started teaching in the 1980s we were reliant on the post or on pupils taking messages home and for one reason or another these did not always get seen, especially if it was bad news! Many a letter remained crumpled at the bottom of a school bag! We have been able to use our text messaging service to alert parents to an issue on the way to school on Monday, and then yesterday we contacted everyone about the extreme weather we are expecting later today. As temperatures are cooling down over the weekend please ensure everyone is back in normal uniform on Monday.

We rarely use the post at all, and we have also avoided printing expensive glossy documents for a long time now as the internet is so readily accessible. This has saved the school a good deal of money over the years. Using Twitter to celebrate success has also been a very cost effective way of sharing things. Did you know RCCS was the first school to actively use this platform back in 2009?

Last week I shared the calendar overview with you. Today I can also share other important dates such as parents' evenings (which we expect to be in person) and reports for 2022/23- you can access that here. All this sort of information is kept in the Parents and Carers section of our website.

For the last few years we have been involved in the School of Hard Knocks programme. We have been very pleased with how this has gone, but funding has changed and this will not be happening next year.  I would like to thank all those who came in to support this; they have helped make a difference in the lives of many of ours students.

Mrs Summers took her Y10 Food group to Crosskeys College yesterday for a special hospitality day. They worked with staff and students at the college making, and then serving, Italian dishes.  It was a very successful event, Our links with the college remain very strong in a number of areas.

Our Year Eight rugby team is playing in a CSSA final today! Good luck to them and I hope to be able to post an update here later on. It's an early KO at 9.45 am so hopefully they will avoid the intense heat later in the day.

UPDATE: Unfortunately the opposition were unable to field a team, so RCCS were declared the winners! Well done all of you!

We have a number of vacancies at RCCS. I mentioned two teaching assistant posts last week, and we have another one now for a specific literacy support role. There is also a brand new post advertised. We are working in partnership with the Welsh Rugby Union and are looking to appoint a hub officer. All information can be found under the vacancies tab on this website. This is a very exciting community project and I will share more in a later post.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 28

10th June 2022

Time has gone by so quickly it is hard to believe we are now in the last half term of the academic year! Already though, our thoughts have turned to next year's planning. Please click here to access the overview for 2022/23. You will see term will start for most pupils on Tuesday, 6th September, but for Y7 only on the Monday 5th. You will also I am sure note how near to Christmas the term goes this year! The professional learning days (training days for staff) have been added though these could potentially change. We have worked closely with the local primary schools to ensure that as far as possible these are the same across the cluster, and I think at least three of the five will be, but do check with your younger children's schools to be sure. Later this month we'll give you the dates and times for parents' evenings and when reports will be issued.

It's not only Y11 who have been doing GCSE exams, as Y10 have also been sitting some papers. Results will be issued on Thursday August 25th and this year we will return to having results collected at school for those who wish to do so. More information will follow

There are a number of staff changes due for September. We don't share the names of staff leaving until later in the term, but I know some people have seen adverts and drawn conclusions! We currently have two vacancies for teaching assistants which may interest people in our community. You can access the job advert here. This half term we have welcomed Miss Grist who is covering Mrs Parkinson, drama, while she is on maternity leave.

If you have a child in Y6 you will shortly receive an email directing you to an update on the transition activities at the end of the month. You can find the link here on the dedicated cluster website. We are looking forward to meeting our new pupils soon!

Finally we are looking for anyone who may be able to support on our school allotment. A small area needs to be be prepared for planting and a rotavator would make this job a lot easier! If you would be able to help with this, or know of someone who might be, please get in touch with Mrs Howells. Thanks.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 27

20th May 2022

Just a brief update this week...

Our Y9 boys played the final of the Caerphilly Schools Football Cup on Monday. It seems all big games are ending up in penalties these days and this was no exception. I am delighted to confirm that we came out on top! This is the first CSSA trophy we have won for a little while, partly due to the suspension of games during Covid, so everyone was absolutely delighted! Very well done to the team and all involved in supporting the coaching, you can see a great post match picture on this tweet!

Exams are now well underway and seem to be going well for most people. There is always the chance that an exam may go badly for someone, however, and I wrote a blog about this a few years ago which I have now recorded as a short clip, so if anyone needs some encouragement and advice after a particularly challenging paper, please check this out.

There will be no update next Friday as it is the start of half term break. Next half term will be a busy one as always, not least as we begin to get ready for the new school year ahead. Later in June we will be providing you with the calendar overview and key dates for 2022/23, and we will also be publishing information on the new curriculum.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 26

13th May 2022

GCSE exams start in earnest next week and we would like to wish our candidates all the very best. More information, including the timetable, is available on our qualifications page.

Mr Coombes and I have attended meetings this week with senior colleagues from our feeder primary schools. These have been very useful in terms of curriculum planning and it has been great to see how joined up our thinking and ideas are. We completed a survey of Y6 parents recently and comments from this are being factored in to our work on curriculum, and we are also planning further pupil voice activities.

On Wednesday Mrs Roberts from the Risca branch of Cancer Research UK came in to present certificates to a group of Y10 who have raised money as part of their Welsh Bac project work. Very well done to them! Can I take this opportunity to remind Y10 that applications for prefect positions need to be in by next Friday?

We have now rescheduled the Y10 Parents' Evening to the afternoon/evening of Tuesday, July 5th. More information will be sent to parents nearer the time, but I can confirm it will be a face to face in school event.

Congratulations to the Y9 boys' football team who won their CSSA semi-final against a strong Lewis Pengam team this morning! They will now play St Martin's in the final on Monday.

On Monday next week we have a Governors' meeting. We are fortunate in that we have a full Governing Body. There are no vacancies since two new Y7 parents filled the positions advertised some time ago. The annual report to parents will be published later in the year.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 25

6th May 2022

There was an Expressive Arts Trip to see 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat' in Cardiff which was a great success this week. It is so good to see these visits back on after they were suspended due to Covid. We are now broadly functioning as we were before the pandemic struck- you probably heard the announcement from Welsh Government earlier in the week. However, we are still being made aware of the occasional positive test result and we would ask you still to let us know and to follow the isolation guidance.

Visits into school are also back on, and today we are welcoming Chris Evans, our local MP, into school after a postponement of almost two years!

I'd like to clarify the position with Y11. There is no official 'last day' for them. We will set aside some social time for shirt signing on Friday 27th May which is the last day before half term. After this they still need to attend school when they have lessons for which they still have examinations, and these lessons can make all the difference. Other lessons can be used for revision in school if transport is a problem. Pupils also need to attend when they have an exam, obviously, and they need to be on time, in uniform, and well prepared! Timetables have already been issued and you can find a copy on our Qualifications page HERE. I have recorded an assembly for them with advice and encouragement on revision and exams, and parents can also access that here if they wish.

Assemblies for the other year groups have also been recorded (this is what we have been doing to avoid using the school hall. This was originally due to Covid, but we are still doing this as the hall is being used for exams; the videos are shown in home rooms.) The focus for these assemblies is the danger of fire-setting and wild swimming. I am sure you remember the devastation on the mountain this time last year, and we do not want to see that again, nor do we want to hear of tragic accidents at the reservoir or in the canal.

If you are looking for information about the school this website is the place to come. When we did the recent survey a large majority of people found it helpful. I know parents get a link to this page via text and social media most Fridays, but please do be aware of all the other information here too under the various tabs. The Parents' section has all the dates and parents' evenings etc, and the new days for next year will be added shortly after half term. For new parents there is the Transition page and also our new Cluster Website

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 24

29th April 2022

The summer term began on Monday and it was good to see a higher level of attendance than last term's average. I don't think we can say that Covid is over, nor predict what is around the corner, but there is certainly a different feeling now, and we are expecting further updates from Welsh Government with regard to risk assessments. We are fully expecting to be able to have a Prom for Y11, to have a face to face Parents' Evening for Y10 at some point after half term and to welcome parents and Y6 pupils to visit the school as I mentioned in my letter last month.

As many of you know sports fixtures are back at schools as well, and I went down to watch the Y8 football team on Thursday. Not the result that we would have wanted but the important thing is we are playing again, and the team put in a really good effort.

The dog walk before the Easter break was very successful- thanks to everyone who came along to support, and to the organisers, Mr and Mrs Rutter.

Next week is a shorter one for pupils, as not only do we have the Bank Holiday on Monday, but Tuesday is a training day for staff, so pupils will not return until the Wednesday. You can access the calendar overview here. This is also a short half term as it ends on May 27th.

I'm going to be looking for a new team of prefects/senior students shortly, so Y10 please consider whether this might be something you'd be interested in applying for!

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 23

 1st April 2022

Just a brief update this week.

PARENTAL SURVEY

I have provided feedback on the recent parental survey in the short video below. Thanks to everyone who completed this, we have found it very useful.

COVID-19 PROTOCOLS

We still expect everyone to follow the guidance which advises people to stay away from work/school if they test positive, pending two negative LFD tests taken on consecutive days on the fifth and sixth days. Tests can still be collected from school

Nothing more this week other than a reminder of Sunday's dog walk, and to confirm that term ends on Friday 8th April. There will be no further update now until the new term, unless of course I need to make you aware of any urgent news. We start back on Monday 25th April.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 22

25th March 2022

The number of pupils and staff off school due to a positive Covid test has risen quite dramatically recently. Pupils' attendance has been around about the 80% mark this month and we have a number of staff unwell. However, we have so far been able to keep all year groups in school, and I really hope this will remain the case.

Y11 are working hard in the build up to their exams. All need to attend school until half term in the summer. After that they need only attend the days they have exams or on the days they have lessons in examination subjects. There are a number of after school revision sessions taking place and I am indebted to the staff for the extra work they are doing in this regard.

Today I have written to our  new Y6 parents- some of whom are of course also current parents. I'm providing details of a couple of transition events, and also asking them to complete a survey about the curriculum, as we are launching the new curriculum for Y7 in September 2022 and we want to be able to consider the views of our community. You can find more in the Transition section of this website

Talking of surveys, many thanks to all those who took the trouble to complete the parental one last week. We have some really useful information and I will be providing feedback in next week's update

We held a minute of silence on Wednesday, Covid Memorial Day, when we paused to remember those we had lost, and those who still grieve or who remain affected by this terrible pandemic.

Next week is Autism Awareness week and we'll be marking that here in the school. Also we have a dog walk planned for Sunday 3rd April in Cwmcarn- why not come along? See the poster below.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 21

18th March 2022

We would be very grateful if parents could take a few minutes to complete this short survey. Your opinion is very important to us, and I'd like to thank you in advance for doing this. We will also send reminders out over the next couple of weeks. Please note you do not need to sign in to google to complete this survey. If you'd rather read on and come back to the survey later, there's also a link at the end of this update.

On Wednesday lots of us wore a hat to school to help raise awareness of young carers. There was a great variety of headgear to be seen on both staff and students! The topic has been discussed widely in the school, and I know people in general are much more aware of the responsibilities many of our pupils have at home.

Our PE Department has been busy and I have an update from them!

Tuesday 15th March

Year 9 A and B netball teams took to the court for the first time since the pandemic struck against Blackwood. We had convincing wins in both games; both Miss Edmunds and Mrs Perry are extremely proud of their performances. B team won 8-2 and A team won 8-2.  Seren y Gem: Maisie Baston (A Team) and Ellie Holvey (B Team)

Year 7/8 Rugby Cup Game lost 5 tries to 1 against Heolddu. Opposition teachers were VERY complimentary of Will Taylor Year 10 who refereed the game exceptionally well for his Welsh Bacc community hours. Seren y Gem: Cai Caesar

Year 9 Football beat Heolddu 8-1. Seren y Gem: Ciaran Bleakley with a hat trick.

Wednesday 16th March

Yr 8 Football v Ebbw Fawr (Rearranged friendly) A loss against a strong opposition. Seren y Gem: Jack Jefferies scoring 2 goals.

Representative honours

Many congratulations to Vinni Ambrossi Yr 10 who has been selected for England in the U16 indoor cricket tournament in Dubai later this month.

Sport Caerphilly

Mr Knott is leading on  a Y9 Health and Wellbeing project that has over 31 girls inducted into the gym and taking part in fitness classes on a Monday and Thursday after school. In return the girls have a 3 month free membership to the gym.

Yr 7 FitBit Project: Miss Lewis and Mrs Coles from the ALN department have organised a project with Sport Caerphilly. It was golf last week, it's Dragons rugby this week, and a variety of activities  are on the way over the coming weeks. These activities are taking place in their PE lessons.

Thanks to Team PE for this update and for all they are doing- together with colleagues from outside the immediate department- to promote sport and health & fitness at RCCS

Don't forget to do  the survey if you have a minute- the link is below. Thank you very much.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 20

11th March 2022

We were very sorry to have to postpone the Y10 parents' evening this week due to problems with our internet connection in school. The Y7 meeting on 17th March will still go ahead as planned as these seem to have been resolved. The Y10 session will be rescheduled in the summer term and we hope this will run as a face to face meeting in school- more information will follow.

We are still getting notifications of positive C-19 tests from staff and pupils; indeed this has risen slightly of late. Covid has not been in the news much for obvious reasons but it has not yet gone away. Restrictions are due to be lifted however, and as well as having in-person parents' evenings back as mentioned above we also expect to see school trips, assemblies (which have all been online for a long time now), and other events back on the school agenda very soon.

Many thanks to all who have donated things for the Ukraine appeal. We have been taking loads down to a distribution centre. We are still collecting, so please help if you can.

We now have written confirmation that the Prom will take place at Bryn Meadows on 29th June 2022. Please note the school cannot be held responsible if this needs to be cancelled due to, for example, a resurge in Covid and new rules being put in place. More information will be passed on to Y11.

If your child walks to school please can you remind them that they need to be alert near the roads. A combination of lack of awareness, perhaps brought about by long periods at home and less traffic on the roads during the lockdowns, together with the habit many have of looking at their phones as they walk (not an issue limited to just teenagers!) has caused many to be less than vigilant. We will also be mentioning this in school, of course.

I hope you are all now familiar with the Class Charts app which we use at RCCS at the moment? We're planning on using it even more, as it is a very effective way of communicating. Please check it regularly. The link is here. If you don't have an account or if you have any questions please get in touch with your child's Wellbeing Leader.

Talking of which, Mr Hare has been looking after Y7 in Mr Lloyd's absence and I'd like to thank him and the Y7 team for all they are doing. We're going to be having another look at the groupings as we go into the summer term as we have got to know the pupils better, but of course we'll keep parents up to speed with any changes.

A reminder that we are raising awareness of young carers on Wednesday and we are inviting everyone to wear a hat that day to show this!

Head Teacher / Prifathro

Y10 PARENTS' EVENING UPDATE 08.03.22

We have been experiencing a number of issues with the internet in school and we are unable to guarantee connectivity for the Y10 parents' evening on Wednesday 9th March. We are therefore going to postpone this until the summer term when we hope to be able to hold the event in person at the school. More information and a date will follow in due course. If you have any urgent concerns please contact teachers directly, as usual. We apologise for the short notice.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 19

4th March 2022

The tragic situation in the Ukraine is uppermost in our thoughts at the moment, and as a school we are happy to be a hub for donations to support. Any items from those listed below can be dropped off at the school and we will ensure they get to where they need to be. For those who prefer to donate with money, we suggest the British Red Cross is a suitable charity and you can find the link here

ITEMS NEEDED: sanitary products, personal hygiene products, nappies, blankets and sleeping bags, dressings, bandages, non-prescription medication, dry food (tins and packets), toys.

As part of our professional learning day just before half term we continued to look at how we are developing the curriculum at RCCS and with our primary colleagues. There's a useful guide on the new curriculum provided by Welsh Government and you can access that here, and you can find lots more under the curriculum tab on this website. We are also developing a website with staff in the Primary Schools where we can share transition information and our curriculum plans; this is still under construction.

Miss Johnston organised a quiz for World Book Day yesterday for KS3 homeroom groups. In a closely fought context 9RJ came out as winners with an incredible score of 35/42, with7MH and 7JH very close behind. Well done to them and to everyone who had a go or who helped record extracts for the quiz.

I can provide more information on the Prom for Y11 this year. We have a venue, the Bryn Meadows Golf and Country Club and a NEW provisional date of 29th June.  I am very hopeful this will be able to go ahead, but please do not make definite plans until all is confirmed.

The local authority, CCBC, have introduced an ID card for all young carers and you can find more information by following this link. We have application forms in school, available from reception. Mr Oliver will be sharing more information in assemblies next week

In the weeks leading up to half term we conducted a review of the school, visiting lessons, and talking to staff and students. These have been very challenging times for all of us. Covid has been casting a shadow for two years, but it does seem this is finally having less of an impact on our day to day lives. The review provides us with very useful information which will inform how we work moving forward but one thing that came across clearly was the strength of the relationships between staff and students and the community feel to the school. This was  so important during the height of the pandemic and remains so as we move forward.

21st March 2022 will be a historic moment for children and their rights in Wales. From that day on, physically punishing children will be illegal in Wales. We want to help protect children and their rights, to give them the best start in life. As a parent, here’s what you need to know about the change in law.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 18

11th February 2022

Just a very brief update from me to remind you that this half term ends on Thursday of next week for pupils, and the term will resume on Monday 28th February. Also a reminder that the final day of this half term is a non-uniform day organised by Welsh Bac students raising funds for Dementia UK and the Risca Food Bank.

The next weekly message from me will be on Friday 4th March, unless of course there is a need for an update before then.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 17

4th February 2022

It's February already which for many people means the start of the Six Nations tournaments! It also means half-term cannot be too far away, and in fact we just have two week left in school before that short break. This is a good time to mention the possibility of changes to the school year which are being considered by the Welsh Government. Is the current structure of term times and holidays right in our country, or does it need to be changed? Is the summer holiday too long? Should we set term times and not have to fit in with Easter changing every year? There is currently consultation with the workforce and I am sure this will be extended to pupils and parents shortly.

The last day of this half term is on Thursday 17th February, and the School Parliament has agreed this should be a fundraising, charity non-uniform day. The organisation of this will be down to Welsh Bac students who have this as part of their project.

You may remember from a previous update that a group of Y8 won a prize in the recent South Wales First Lego League challenge regional finals? Here they are with their certificates and the trophy which, of course, is itself made of lego! Well done to all of you.

We are organising Leavers' Hoodies for our Y11 again this year, and you can find out more in this letter from Mr Huggett. These are a great way of remembering your final year, and they'll have the names of all the year group on the back.

Our sports teams have been playing fixtures again! Follow Mr Knott (@RCCS_Mr KnottPE) and Mrs Perry (@RCCS_MrsPerry) on Twitter for  the latest updates. There'll be a report on how we have been getting on in next week's update.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 16

28th January 2022

We had a very useful Governors' Meeting earlier in the week looking at the new Alternative Learning Needs (ALN) Code. You can read more about this important new piece of legislation here.  Next week we have a meeting of the Standards Committee, when we will be looking at current Y11 predictions, and presenting our strategy to raise standards in numeracy, particularly in light of time lost due to the pandemic.

A quick update on the Covid  situation. Face coverings should still be worn in school, and we advise all staff and pupils to take  a LFD test three times a week. The period of isolation has now been reduced to five days, and long as there is a negative test result on Day 5, and another on the morning of Day 6 you can return to school that day. Please keep us informed of all Covid related issues using the dedicated confidential@riscacom.net email address.

The Mental Health Ambassadors are looking for new pupils to join the team and promote positive mental health. The team's main objective is to raise awareness of mental health and encourage young people to talk about mental health and to be aware of, and access, available support services. Anyone is welcome. We’re looking for pupils from Year 7 up to Year 10. Just tell us about how you think you can make a difference and what you believe needs to be done within school for positive mental health. To sign up please contact the Year 11 Ambassadors via email, MHA@riscacom.net

We are hoping to be able to have a Leavers' Prom again this year. We can't be certain yet, but a committee has been convened to make provisional plans. We'll keep Y11 up to date over the next couple of months- and we'll keep our fingers crossed that this can happen.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 15

21st January 2022

LEGO CLUB

Mr Hare, who runs Lego Club, has an update for us!

Lego Club have been preparing for the regional Lego League Tournament. This year the theme was “Cargo Connect” learning about how material and cargo is moved around. Students have been working on building, coding and researching their robot since September.  At the competition on Wednesday, the judges were impressed with the students' presentation, research and design of the robot. The students said that it was “an amazing opportunity and challenge.”  They enjoyed learning to make presentations, coding and researching their personal project the “Hyper drone.” They did incredibly well, and it's been great to see them start from scratch, picking up new skills and learning to work together.  For a group of students to pick up the skills needed for the competition required a lot of work after school and at home.  They won the "Rising Star Award,"  awarded to the team that judges felt have made the most progress.

Well done to everyone involved and thanks to Mr Hare for organising everything. Winning that award was very special.

YEAR NINE OPTIONS

The process of choosing subjects for Key Stage 4 is underway, and you will be able to find further information on the Year 9  Page from Monday 24th January- there is already a presentation that you can view on there. If you have any queries or questions regarding options, please email y9options@riscacom.net.

GOVERNORS / ALN Code

We have a Governors' Meeting on Monday when we will be exploring further the new ALN code and its implications for our school. You may remember this was officially launched here at RCCS when the then Ministers for Education (Kirsty Williams) and Health and Social Services (Vaughan Gething) visited and met staff and pupils. You can read more about this important new piece of legislation here. We have a strong team managing alternative learning needs here. Mrs Coles is our ALN co-ordinator and Miss Lewis is the deputy, while Mrs Howells manages our ASC Centre. You can get in touch with them via email and their contact details can be found here.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 15

14th January 2022

I’d like to start by making you aware of the Winter Fuel Support Scheme. If CCBC residents are in receipt of working-age benefits such as Income support, Income Related Employment and Support Allowance, Universal Credit, Income Based Job Seeker’s Allowance or Working Tax Credits then they may be eligible to receive £100 to help with the cost of energy bills. Residents can apply by visiting the council’s website: Caerphilly - Caerphilly County Borough. All applications must be submitted by 18 February 2022 and payments will be made from January 2022 until 31 March 2022.

Y11 took autumn assessment exams just before Christmas. We have been handing these back and going over the content as well as talking with the students about their experience of taking exams after such a long gap without them. It is a broadly positive picture. This is very pleasing as although it is not yet certain, I expect examinations will indeed be back in the summer term and we need to ensure they get the best preparation possible.

Covid related absence has not been as high as we had expected and we have not yet had to take any decisions to send classes home. It is still too early to say, but I think we can be hopeful that things are improving at last across the country. The whole school attendance figure is currently around 86% which is higher than the averages we were seeing last term. We are still advising LFD tests are taken regularly (see previous posts) and the new batch of tests we have are slightly different in that they require two nasal swabs rather than having to swab the back of the throat, which has been an unpleasant experience for many.

Year Nine are in the process of choosing options, and a presentation will shortly also be shared with parents to explain what choices are available to them in Year Ten and Eleven. There is a good range of courses to choose from.

The new School Parliament- formerly called the School Council, a group of elected students who represent their peers- will be meeting shortly and they'll be looking at the uniform policy. If there are any changes suggested these would of course be shared with parents as well for their opinion.

UPDATE FROM THE HEAD (WM14)

5th January 2022

Further to my update on 2nd January (see below) I can now provide further details with regard to the start of the new term.

All pupils should return to school at the normal time tomorrow, Thursday 6th January unless:

Please keep us informed of any such situation by using the confidential@riscacom.net email

Pupils and staff should take an LFD test prior to returning. It is recommended these tests are done three times a week, and we would suggest Sunday night/Monday morning, Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, and Thursday night/Friday morning. We will provide more tests for pupils when they return. This week please test tonight (Wednesday) or first thing tomorrow morning.

If a pupil has been identified as a close contact of someone who has tested positive, including someone who lives in the same home, he/she may attend school, but will need to return a negative LFD test result every day for 7 days or until 10 days since the last contact with the person who tested positive for COVID-19, if this is earlier.

We will be following the same timetable and school times as we did before Christmas. Pupils and staff should wear a face covering in the school buildings and keep movement around school to a minimum. They should use the entrance designated for their year group on arrival in the morning.

Now, as I am sure you are aware, one of the concerns all schools have is the possiblity that a large number of staff may be off at some point and this means we are unable to run the school safely. Should this be the case, we may need to ask certain pupils to work from home for a period of time, and we will try to provide you with as much notice as possible. We will do all we can to avoid this, of course, and keep any time away from school to a minimum.

If pupils need to work from home, work will be provided, and we will be reminding them how to access this when we see them this week. We'll provide you with further information if and when this becomes necessary. If pupils are at home because they are unwell we would not expect them to be working, but we would expect them to catch up on their return. You can find more information about working from home in our learning section

As a school we feel well prepared to manage any situation from having a full school with face to face learning to another lockdown, and anything in between. Let's hope the first scenario continues to prevail.

Thank you, as always, for your support.

UPDATE FROM THE HEAD

2nd January 2022

Blwyddyn Newydd Dda! I hope you had a good Christmas and I hope you and your family are well.

As you will be aware from my final message last term (see below) I can confirm term starts for pupils on Thursday 6th January. There will be a further update from me on Wednesday, 5th January, which will include information about any changes we have made to our operating practice at RCCS, but I think it is safe to assume that we will be starting at the usual time on Thursday (timetable week 1),  that your child will be expected to have a face covering unless medically exempt, and that he/she should have taken a LFD test which has returned a negative result.

Meanwhile, please inform the school using the confidential@riscacom.net email address of any positive tests and/or if your child is isolating and unable to attend school. Thanks.

UPDATE FROM THE HEAD

16th December

I have today received notification from Welsh Government that the start of term for pupils will be delayed across Wales until Thursday 6th January in order to provide schools with time to plan for the new term. The situation with the coronavirus remains very volatile, so these days will allow us to review our risk assessment, make any necessary adjustments, and prepare accordingly. I will get back to you with an update and further information as soon as I can.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 13

10th December 2021

This will be the last scheduled update of the year, as we break up on Thursday 16th at 3pm. I would like to start by thanking the school community for their support at what remains a very difficult time. Parents and carers have been excellent at keeping us informed of covid test results and have followed the guidelines carefully. The number of positives at the moment remains very low compared to the early part of the term, but we are aware there could be a rise in the new year when or if the new variant takes hold. I am also grateful to parents who have supported the uniform code and been sure their children attend school punctually; the number of uniform issues has greatly reduced and nearly everyone is in school on time with very few exceptions.

There have been lots of donations to the Foodbank already and these are being taken down to Risca regularly. Don't forget it's Christmas Jumper day here on the 16th and donations to this worthy cause are welcomed.

I have been really impressed by the way Y11 have been approaching the autumn assessments this month, and I am looking forward to seeing the results and analysis in the new year.

Please see this update from CCBC's chief education officer, Keri Cole, to all parents and carers with children at schools in the borough.

It remains for me to wish you and your families a very merry Christmas and best wishes for what we must hope will be a better year in 2022. Term begins on Tuesday 4th January at the normal time.

John Kendall

Head Teacher / Prifathro

10.12.21

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 12

3rd December 2021

You will have seen from the update on Tuesday that face coverings should now be worn in secondary school buildings when physical distancing cannot be maintained. This change came about because of concerns about the new omicron variant of the coronavirus. The other change announced this week was that anyone who tests positive with omicron, and all their contacts, will need to self isolate for ten days. The full extent of the impact of this new variant remains to be seen, but clearly this could have serious implications for schools, especially in terms of the potential number of children who need to SI at home should a positive test be recorded. I don't think we will know much more until after Christmas, and there has at the time of writing been no case of omicron in our area. As always, my commitment is to keep you informed through these weekly updates and at other times as needed. At present pupil attendance continues to be stable.

The last day of term is Thursday 16th December and this will be a Christmas Jumper/non-uniform day. We would ask everyone to either bring in a donation to the foodbank, or a pound to go towards this organisation. I know they need tinned food, uht milk, coffee and jam at the moment. Talking of uniform we have been very pleased with the compliance this term and several visitors have commented on it recently. It seems ages since we had a non-uniform day! I am looking forward to seeing the Christmas jumpers (and, I suspect, hats etc!) There will be a prize for the best one.

Y11 have been doing autumn assessments and these continue for the next couple of weeks.  Whatever happens with exams in the summer, these are important, and we will be looking at the results closely in January.

Finally, another reminder that we have two vacancies for Parent Governors. If you would be interested in joining this group, please check under the Governors tab. This is a very important part of RCCS; the governors provide support and challenge to the school and we have a very strong and experienced team in place. The atmosphere at meetings is business-like but not overly formal, and all new governors would be offered training and support.

John Kendall

Head Teacher / Prifathro

UPDATE FROM THE HEAD, Tuesday 30th November 2021

You may have seen the Welsh Government has strengthened measures to mitigate the effects of coronavirus in schools following the identification of the new omicron variant, and all staff and learners in Welsh secondary schools, colleges and universities should now wear face coverings (FCs) while indoors where physical distancing cannot be maintained. This should come into effect as soon as possible. We will be alerting pupils to this new guidance today and from tomorrow we will be giving regular reminders.

Please ensure your child comes into school with a clean FC each day. Thank you.

The new WG guidance can be viewed here.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 11

26th November 2021

Christmas is a time when we think about others, particularly those less fortunate than ourselves. As you know from previous posts the RVE department has been running an Operation Christmas Child programme. The pupils prepared over 80 boxes which will bring joy to children living in countries across the world where poverty is rife.

We are also eager to help people in our own community who may need some support, and will be working with the local Foodbank to provide much needed donations. We'll be providing pupils and staff with more information about what we can do and what is needed next week.

Incidentally, there a useful guide published by Welsh Government to the financial support that is available here in Wales and you can access that HERE.

Year Eleven are preparing for their December exams which start very soon. The big majority of them are engaging well. We are trying to give them plenty of guidance on taking exams as they have not done them for so long due the the pandemic. You can find more information under the Qualifications tab. It seems likely that exams will go ahead in the summer, but it is still not certain and we are preparing for all eventualities

Can I remind you that we are looking to appoint two parent governors? You can find out more information HERE.

Finally, a reminder that the last day of term is Thursday 16th December, and the new term will begin on Tuesday 4th January. There's a parents' evening (online) for Y9 coming up on the 12th January.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 10

19th November 2021

Let's start with news from our Humanities Faculty. Last week our GCSE Geography group had a field trip, the first one for some time. They did not go far, just to the new Jubilee Park estate in Rogerstone, but it was good to see students engaged in learning outside the classroom again, and they were involved in a very relevant task. Thanks to Mr John and Miss Howells for organising this.

The RVE Department (formerly called Religious Education, RVE stand for Religion, Values and Ethics) have been organising an Operation Christmas Child project, and many pupils have been contributing to this. They have also appointed some ambassadors for their subject, so many congratulations to those who were successful and thanks to Mrs Cartlidge and Miss John for overseeing the charity project and the student leadership opportunities.

The Expressive Arts Faculty are busy organising the Christmas Concert, which will be a video this year. Our GCSE music students also had a trip out this week, in their case this was to Crosskeys College to benefit from some of the amazing facilities they have there, and to work with their foundation degree students. Mrs Pearce was really pleased with how things went, in spite of some frustrations over the transport which were quickly resolved thank to our office team!

On Monday the School Parliament had an initial meeting and the new team is up and running! Mr Williams is in charge of this group this year, which has replaced the old School Council. I also had a meeting with the prefects on Tuesday. It has been harder to consult with the student body recently other than by surveys, so it is good to get these face to face meetings back on track. More on this in later updates.

On Wednesday we were visited by two Estyn HMI inspectors to look at how we are managing the new ALN (additional learning needs) reforms and the new curriculum. This was a very positive and useful day; they were impressed by what we are doing and gave us some helpful advice on how we can develop things further

Also on Wednesday we held a Y8 Parents' Evening on line. I realise there are still a few teething problems, but for most people all went well. Later in the year we will be evaluating how we manage these events, and will be asking parents as well as teachers about how they find the online experience.

We have two vacancies for Parent Governors. If you would be interested in joining this group, please check under the Governors tab. This is a very important part of RCCS; the governors provide support and challenge to the school and we have a very strong and experienced team in place. Meetings are held five times a year, and there are also additional committee meetings. The atmosphere is business-like but not overly formal, and all new governors would be offered training and support.

As a follow up to last week's message, you may find this guide to social media helpful. Here you can find out more about Instagram, Snapchat, Monkey, Fortnite, CoD, and a number of other platforms, programs and games you may or may not have heard of, or be familiar with. Definitely worth a look.

Finally I can confirm that there has been a dramatic decrease in the number of positive coronavirus test results in our community, and school attendance is now back nearer the 90% mark. However we cannot be complacent and need to keep taking sensible precautions. It would be foolish to assume we have 'turned a corner'; we need to wait and see how things pan out over the weeks leading up to Christmas. Thanks, as always, for your support with this. The community has been brilliant at keeping us informed and following all the protocols.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 9

12th November 2021

Only a short update this week but I would urge you to read this communication from the local authority concerning TikTok. There have been a number of videos posted falsely linked to schools across Wales and the UK, including in Caerphilly and Newport, in some cases showing offensive, abusive or illegal content. We welcome the firm view taken by CCBC outlined in the letter, and will take all necessary actions against those who post, share or promote such materials about any members of our community on any social media platform, or who masquerade falsely as an official account. This would be up to and including formal legal action and, in the case of current pupils, permanent exclusion from school.

Our school has official accounts on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

FACEBOOK: www.facebook.com/RiscaCCS

TWITTER: www.twitter.com/RiscaCCS

YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/RiscaCCS

The school does not have a TikTok account, nor are there any staff accounts on this platform.

Please note a small number of  false social media/TikTok accounts purporting to be linked to our school are currently being investigated.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 8

5th November 2021

Face coverings

You are aware that so far this term we have encouraged the wearing of face coverings in the building. Due to the prevalence of Covid in the area, this guidance is changing in all CCBC secondary schools, and now everyone is strongly advised to wear a face covering inside school buildings at all times when social distancing cannot be maintained. Please ensure your child comes to school each day with a clean face covering. We do have a small supply in school but we would appreciate if families could support this by providing a face covering themselves.

Isolation

I advised you in an additional message on Monday that if anyone in a household has Covid symptoms or has tested positive, then everyone living in that home must self isolate and get a PCR test as soon as possible. Only if that is negative can they return to school. Please keep us informed using the dedicated confidential@riscacom.net email address.

Bonfire Night

I hope everyone stays safe over the Bonfire weekend. Please watch out for pets who will probably not enjoy the sounds and lights of fireworks as much as some of us do.

Remembrance

My assembly for next week is on the theme of Remembrance. Sadly there will be no service in the Moriah Church this year, but we will be observing the two minute silence at 11am on Thursday. During the assembly I look at the entries in the old school logbooks for November 1918 and uncover an interesting comparison to the situation we are in today. The assembly will also be available on our YouTube channel next week.

Parents' Evenings

These are being held online this year. The Y8 event is on Wednesday 17th November and more information will be with you shortly. You can find the full programme of parents' evenings under the Parents and Carers tab on this website.

UPDATE NOVEMBER 1st 2021

Please note that rules regarding isolation have changed. If anyone in a household has Covid symptoms or has tested positive, then everyone living in that home must self isolate and get a PCR test as soon as possible. Only if that is negative can they return to school. Please keep us informed using the dedicated confidential@riscacom.net email address.

Take care,

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 7

15th October 2021

My thoughts are beginning to turn to Christmas! Well, to be exact, more to our Christmas Concert, the preparations for which are underway. Anyone interested in being involved needs to get in touch with Mrs Pearce, Head of Music, and you can email her here. It is open to contributions from music, drama,  art... or indeed anything creative arts based.  The deadline for entries is Monday 22 November 2021, but please don't leave it until the last minute. The concert is going to be a video rather than a live event, and I am looking forward to it already!

Attendance remains around the 70% mark for pupils, due to numbers self isolating, and staff absence is much higher than we would normally expect for the same reasons. Please continue to follow the guidance as mentioned in previous updates.

Nothing else this week, other than to remind everyone that the last day of this half term for pupils is Thursday, October 21st. Friday is a staff training day. Term resumes for all of us on Monday 1st November. I'll let you know of any urgent information as necessary, but the next regular update will be on Friday 5th November.

Please take care over Halloween and the bonfire night weekend.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 6

8th October 2021

The protocols have changed in terms of SI (self-isolation), and from Monday any pupil who lives in a home with someone who has a positive diagnosis of Covid-19 is asked to take a LFD test each day for seven days, and should this be positive they should self isolate and take a PCR test. Anyone who develops symptoms (see the update from ABUHB last week below) should take a PCR tests as a matter of course and SI pending the result. Extra LFD kits are available from us at the school.

Last week saw a big escalation in cases here, with about 30% of the pupil population either off with the virus or waiting for a PCR test result. We have also had a number of staff unwell. As you know I thought it prudent to send a message to families on Monday, not least because we thought it might prove difficult to staff classes, but fortunately we were able to do so. It is hard to see how things are going to progress, but I am not expecting an improvement in the situation for a while yet. Given the high levels, we ask everyone to exercise maximum precaution. Face coverings are recommended when walking around the buildings, classrooms and offices are ventilated, and good hand hygiene needs to be followed. If your child is identified as a close contact or believes he or she may have been, please follow this guidance.

Remember if your child is isolating but feels well enough you can access work via the Learning section of this website.

Remember also that there are other viruses out there making people feel unwell. Lots of people seem to have severe colds, even if they do not test positive for Covid or have the recognised Covid symptoms. However, they are still ill, and as such should not come to school until they are better.

Last Friday the Year 7 Active project was launched here at Risca. This is a county-wide project whicn entitles all Y7 pupils in the borough, or who attend schools in the borough, to free access to all leisure centres. This is a great idea, and I hope our students will take full advantage.

On Thursday a Careers Convention was held here at the Leisure Centre. There was a real buzz in Y11 about this, and it was great to see all the opportunities available, in post-16 education, apprenticeships, and full time employment.

There was an update about examinations next summer from Qualifications Wales earlier this week and you can find out more in the Qualifications section on this site. We'll make sure pupils are always kept up to date with things, especially Year 11.

Take care and stay safe, everyone.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 5

1st October 2021

Let's not start with Covid-19 issues for once , though we will need to return to this later.

We're now four weeks into the term and everyone has settled back in, or, in the case of Y7, settled into their new school. We had no new teaching staff this year, which I think is a first since I've been here. Uniform and punctuality has been generally very good, and this is down to the strong partnerships we have with you as parents, so thank you for your support. My biggest concern remains the parking out at the front of school. Can I urge you to collect and drop off in the designated zone by the Leisure Centre or by our ASC/ALN Department if you have a special arrangement? This is well managed and policed by staff, and is the safe place. We are expecting enforcement officers to attend school soon and we do not want any of our families to be in trouble because they are unaware of the correct protocols.

It's so good to see extra-curricular activities coming back and the after school sports clubs have had a really good uptake. Well done to everyone who is taking the opportunity to get involved, and thank you to the teachers who are taking the time to run the sessions. We've only had one fixture against another school, a girls' football game which I'm delighted to say we won, but I think inter-school fixtures will now go back on hold for a while due to high C-19 numbers. It was great to see four of our boys representing the Islwyn district in the U15s rugby this week, and some of our teachers went along to watch the game which was a convincing win for our district.

And it's not just sports! Other clubs are also either up and running or starting next week, including the RCCS favourite, Minecraft, with Miss Jones and Mr Mock, following our success in reaching the national finals of the competition run jointly with the WRU last term. And our famous Rocket Club with Mrs Baskerville-Jones took off again (sorry for the pun!) on Wednesday evening. I know there will be more opportunities coming, so keep an eye out for more information and get involved if you can.

Instrumental music lessons have been running for a while now, and I know the Expressive Arts Department are planning for a Christmas concert, though this may need to be an online or pre-recorded on-screen event. Whilst I think we would all love to see our pupils performing once again in the church, I think we all realise that we need to be prudent, and we have all developed many IT skills which now mean that setting up something like this is no longer the challenge it would have seemed a few years ago

Which takes us back to the virus, because it is indeed that which is still likely to prevent us from being able to have a live attended concert and all the other things we'd like to. We are feeling the effects of the continuing rise in the number of positive cases in the area. I am really grateful to everyone for their diligence in keeping us informed and I try to respond personally to each message that comes to us via the confidential email address. When pupils are having to isolate they are able to access work online and you can find out more on our Learning page.  We also have an increasing number of staff affected, and if this continues it is possible we may need to consider working in a different way, but as I have said to you I will always keep you informed of any changes, and for the moment it is business as usual: attend school unless you have had a positive test and been told to self isolate and also stay away if you have symptoms (see below); test at least twice a week on Wednesdays and Sundays, and more if you are identified as a close contact; take all the usual precautions in terms of hand sanitising and wearing a face covering inside buildings when moving around.

Take care and stay safe, everyone.

COVID UPDATE FROM THE ANEURIN BEVAN UNIVERSITY HEALTH BOARD

Did you know the symptoms of Covid-19 have widened? They now include a cough, high temperature, loss or change to smell or taste, fatigue, muscle and body aches, headache, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting and diarrhoea. It's important to rule out Covid-19 by booking in for a quick and free PCR test at one of our many mobile testing units. Relying on a lateral flow test when you have any of these symptoms could lead to a false result. To book a test, please call 119 or book a test via https://gov.wales/test-trace-protect-coronavirus

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 4

24th September 2021

A brief update only today to share this message I have received about C-19 vaccinations for secondary aged children:-

"You will receive information from the local health board about when and where your child can get vaccinated. Children will either be invited to mass vaccination centre or, if the vaccine is to be administered in a school setting, then the process will be slightly different and a letter will be sent out to parents. If there is a dispute between a child and the parent about consent, Welsh Government has advised that there will be a process in place to resolve these issues.

For more information please check the WG website:

https://gov.wales/covid-19-vaccination-12-15-year-olds"

We continue to receive notification of positive cases in school. If your child is identified by us as a close contact of a positive case, you will be alerted  by text to this message. However, we all need to continue to be vigilant. Please continue to take the LFD (lateral flow device) tests on Wednesday and Sunday evenings, and ensure your child stays away from school if s/he shows symptoms. Use the confidential@riscacom.net email for any Covid related issues or to report tests results.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 3

17th September 2021

FREE SCHOOL MEALS

Parents are now able to apply for FSMs via the CCBC website and the automated service will send you email updates on the progress and result of your application. Here is the link to access the online form: - Caerphilly - Free school meals. If you need any assistance with this please let us know.

SMART PHONE APPS

The NSPCC has alerted us all to a number of apps some children have been accessing across the UK. They have a dedicated website called Net Aware which you can access here, and there was a useful article in the Western Mail recently which you can read here.

PARENTS' EVENINGS

We're planning to revert to  having parents meet with subject teachers again this year, but to continue to use the online meeting platform. You can see the full list of parents' evenings and reporting dates here. The first meeting is coming up soon, and it's Y11 on 14th October. Parents will be provided with full joining instructions nearer the time.

COVID-19 UPDATE

We have had more cases of C-19 brought to our attention. Pupils and staff who test postive must of course self-isolate. Pupils and staff who are identified as contacts of positive cases do not need to self isolate under the current guidance, but they will be sent a link to this guidance. Just a reminder that you must use the confidential@riscacom.net email address to inform us of any results, and that we are advising that LFD tests be taken every Wednesday and Sunday evening.

'FLU JABS

Your child will be given a letter and consent form to bring home today connected with 'flu jabs. You can find out more about vaccination against influenza here.  This was planned well before any announcement was made about C-19 jabs, and is not connected with that. I have not yet received any information about how the coronavirus vaccination will be rolled out.

DROP OFF AND COLLECTION OF PUPILS

Please remember that the correct drop off and collection point for pupils is by the Leisure Centre. Some parents persist in parking in the road by the pedestrian exit and this is not only causing congestion, it is potentially very hazardous. It is also illegal. Thank you to all the parents who use the correct zone. This is now managed by staff on traffic duty and runs much more smoothly than it did a couple of years ago. We are expecting Civil Enforcement Officers to visit over the next few weeks to support the school in keeping our children safe.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 2

10th September 2021

It's been great to have our pupils back in school, and the new Y7 are settling in very well!

I want to start by thanking parents and carers for ensuring their children have been attending in proper uniform. You must have got fed up with all the reminders last term about how our approach would be different, but we are very pleased nearly every has been immaculate in their attire. In the handful of cases where issues remain, we are already in touch and I am sure we can sort these out very soon. Punctuality, too, has been very good, and we will expect that to continue.

Pupils have got into the swing of our new operating systems well. They are now moving around the school rather than staying in their bubble classrooms. The canteen has been busy, especially for the KS3 lunch break, but everybody has been served in time.

I must apologise for the disruption to our phone service at the start of the week. This has now been sorted out.

Can I remind you that if a positive covid case is identified in school there is no longer a need for everyone in the class or year group to self isolate. It will be up to TTP to decide to what extent, if any, contacts need to self isolate and we will work with them to support this process and inform anyone affected. If you are identified as a contact you will be directed to this guidance via a text message. I would urge everyone to take a LFD test on Wednesday and Sunday evenings as a precaution. I'd also like to remind you that if a student or member of staff shows symptoms they should remain at home and book a test as soon as possible. I cannot predict the future any more than anyone else can, but I think it is inevitable we will see more positive cases as time passes. Remember to use our dedicated email, confidential@riscacom.net, for any Covid related issues,

We have two job opportunities in the school, one for an IT Technician and one for a Cover Supervisor. Further information can be found on the vacancies section of this website.

Have a good weekend.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 1

3rd September 2021

I hope you have had a good summer holiday and feel refreshed and ready for the new year ahead. First of all, let me confirm the start dates for pupils next week:

Y7: Monday 6th September

Y8: Tuesday 7th September

Y9,10,11: Wednesday 8th September

We are having Y7 and Y8 in first so we can make sure they are familiar with the layout of the school, as Y7 are, of course, new to Risca, and Y8 were in a limited area during their first year at RCCS due to the ‘bubbles.’

You can access an overview of the calendar for the year HERE.

Pupils should arrive by 8.40 in time for an 8.50 start. We are still using different entrances for each year group and you can find out where yours is, and see the drop off zones for pupils coming by bus and car HERE. There will be staff on duty to oversee the start and finish of each day. The school day now ends at 3.00pm.

Buses will be running but it seems they are still on last year's timetable at the moment. I am following this up with the Authority and will try to ensure the times are better suited to the start time we have gone back to after last year's changes.

Pupils should be in the correct uniform. Last year, given the circumstances, we took a more lenient view, but from September we will be following up any issues so we ask for your co-operation wth us on this from day one. You can find the school uniform list HERE.

The situation with C-19 remains very volatile as I am sure you are aware. Students and staff are advised to take a LFD test twice each week, on Wednesday and Sunday evenings. If this is positive they need to stay off school and have a PCR test as soon as possible. Anyone who has symptoms must stay off  school and get a test. You may want to do the LFD test on the evening before you start school rather than Wednesday this week. Pupils in Y8-11 should have test kits from last term, though pupils in Y7 will not. Don't worry, we will give these out when you're here and you can start next week. All the information you need for doing the tests can be found with the instuctions that come with the kits. Can you please also check the latest update on self-isolation requirements from Welsh Government which you can find here, as this has changed quite considerably since last July. Welsh Government have also produced specific guidance on arrangements for school aged children which you can find here. Any matters related to absence due to Covid-related issues should be reported on the dedicated email address, confidential@riscacom.net

In terms of the day-to-day running of the school we have, as you know, reverted to the 'normal' school times. We are also going to have pupils go to the specialist teaching rooms rather than remain in a bubble all the time, and the canteen will be open as normal. We are advising everyone to wear a face covering when moving around the school, and they must be worn on school transport, but they will not be required outside the buildings or while sitting in classrooms. Other than that we will be operating pretty much the same as we did last year and pupils will be reminded of all this on their first day in school.

I'd like to finish by wishing everyone a successful new school year. Please be aware that things may change as we go through it, depending on the situation with the virus. My commitment to you is to make sure you are always kept informed through these regular updates.

31st August, 2021

A message for our new pupils from the headteacher…

We have nearly 130 new pupils joining us this year, mainly in Y7 of course. I have already met most of you when I visited your Primary school in July, and I am looking forward to seeing you again on Monday 6th September, your first day at RCCS! How are you feeling about starting with us?

I’m just feeling really nervous…!

Of course you are- and so is everyone else! It is a normal reaction however old you are, and it will be the same when you go to college or university or start a new job! Before you know it the nerves will disappear!

I have no idea where to go next Monday!

OK, as long as you know where the school is…! Once you get here there will be people to help you and show you where to go. School starts at 8.50 am so be sure to be here before then, any time from about 8.30 would be great. You can look at this map of the school if you want to check where your year group entrance is.

I just know I am going to get lost!

Very unlikely, we are not so big and you will be shown where to go. Keep your wits about you and you can’t go wrong! If you do, ask for help.

I don’t know anyone at RCCS.

But in a few days you will! What an opportunity to make new friends!

What do I do for food?

If you’re not yet on the system we’ll get you registered on Monday if you have school dinners. Or you can bring in your own food.

I’m worried I might find the work too difficult…

Let the teachers worry about that. We need to make sure the work challenges you but also that you can achieve. You will never be in trouble for not being able to do something you have tried to do. (It will also be a problem if you find the work too easy!)

I’m not sure I have all the right uniform/kit?

You can find the uniform list by scrolling down, but any minor issues can be sorted out in the first week or so. Remember to bring a school bag with basic equipment like pens and pencils.

I am worried I won’t be with my friends from my old school.

For homeroom (that’s what we call registration and tutor time) you will probably be with some old friends. Where you are in most lessons depends on other things, not who your friends are! Your timetable may change in the first few weeks anyway as we get to know you.

What about Covid related things?

There'll be an update for everyone later this week. You'll be advised to wear a face covering when moving around the school buildings, so you can bring your own if you like; we will provide you with one if needed

Have a look at the my tips for Y7 on Twitter @RiscaCCS_Head or check out the rest of the school website to find out more- you can even find links to a video on YouTube that we made to show you round the school. I’m really looking forward to seeing you on Monday, and on that day you will be the only pupils in school.

FOR ALL PUPILS JOINING OR RETURNING IN SEPTEMBER

Y7: Monday 6th September

Y8: Tuesday 7th September

Y9,10,11: Wednesday 8th September

Here are four useful documents in readiness for the year ahead:-

GCSE RESULTS 2021

Many congratulations to our Y11 students on your GCSE results and the other qualifications you have gained this year!

This has been a difficult time for all of us, but this must not detract from the success you have achieved. This reflects your hard work during the last five years of your time at RCCS and indeed at your Primary school before that, not just your final two years which of course have been like no other. Your resilience and positive attitude certainly paid off.  Your teachers are delighted and I want to thank them and all the staff at our school for their dedication and hard work: it has been well rewarded!

I hope all of you are now in a position to pursue the next stage of your education, an apprenticeship, or work. If you do not receive your results via email this morning (they should be with you at or soon after 8.30 am) or if you need advice please contact us at results2021@riscacom.net and we will get back to you as soon as we can. We are always your school and will be here to support you if and when you need it. The emailed results will be followed up with paper copies in the post.

I hope you will be able to reflect on your whole time here, not just on the final, strange, months. I know how disappointed many of you were that we had no Prom but I hope you have many great memories of RCCS, in and out of the classroom. On behalf of everyone at the school I would like to wish you all the very best for the future. Keep in touch, stay safe. We are hoping to host a celebration of your achievement later in the year, so I hope to see you then.

ARCHIVED INFORMATION FROM 2020/21 BELOW

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 38

16th July 2021

Here's my final message of the school year, a chance for me to say "thank you" to our parents and carers, to our staff, and to our pupils, and to share the names of the prizewinners (which you can also see below) for the academic year. Term ends on Tuesday, 20th July at 2.15 pm.

AWARD WINNERS, JULY 2021

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 37

8th July, 2021

Firstly if you have not already done so, please could you scroll down to read the update from the Chief Education Officer that we posted here on Tuesday. It is quite a confusing time at the moment, as one minute we find ourselves reading about the lifting of restrictions, and the next we're hearing of a big increase in cases. As you know, we are operating under the same Risk Assessment as we have all year; if a pupil has a positive test and has been in school in the previous 48 hours we will isolate the pupils who have been in close proximity and broadly speaking that will be the bubble they are in. At the time of writing we have not had to do this, and this is partly no doubt down to the vigilance in our community, as parents and carers have ensured pupils with symptoms have been kept at home.

Congratulations to our Y8 pupils who were the South East Wales finalists in the WRU/Minecraft Club of the Future competition this week. They just missed out on winning the whole thing! Bad luck, but we are very proud indeed of what you have achieved.

I mentioned this last week, and I apologise for bringing it up yet again, but I do want to be very clear!. Next year we are going to be taking a firmer line on school uniform. You are aware we have taken what we consider to be a more liberal approach during the pandemic. The uniform list can be accessed here. Thank you for your support. Can I also remind you that whilst mobile phones may be brought into school they may not be used in lessons without the permission of the teacher, nor should they be used as cameras on the school campus. Pupils in breach of these rules will have the privilege of having a mobile phone removed. We feel this is a much more sensible approach than a blanket ban, and we want to be able to educate our pupils to use their phones responsibly and sensibly.

There have been some minor changes to the school calendar: you can access the latest version here. Term starts for Y7 on Monday 6th September, for Y8 on Tuesday 7th , and for everyone else on Wednesday 8th.

One of the things many pupils have missed this year has been extra-curricular activities and sports fixtures. Although we have not been able to continue with our weekly Risca Runners club for students during the past term, it has been great to see more staff getting involved and enjoying the local area whilst walking, jogging or running (at a distance!) on a regular basis. Last month saw three of our club runners take part in the ABP Newport Virtual Marathon. This involved running a total of 46.2 km during the month. All three succeeded and received a medal for their efforts. Da iawn bawb!  We're hoping the Risca Runners will be back for all in September, along with other activities.

UPDATE TUESDAY 6th JULY 2021

Please read this important message from our Chief Education Officer which I fully endorse. Thank you for your continuing support. There will be a further update from me on Friday as usual.

John Kendall

Prifathro / Head Teacher

You will no doubt have seen recent media reports about increasing numbers of positive coronavirus cases in schools across the area. It is clear that coronavirus has not gone away and remains a real risk to us all.

Firstly, I would like to thank all those who are doing their bit to control the spread of coronavirus in our community.

Self isolation plays a key role in reducing the spread and you will know that we must follow guidance and ask  pupils to isolate for a period of 10 days if they are in affected ‘bubbles’.

We fully acknowledge that self isolation can be frustrating for young people, particularly for those who are not displaying symptoms, but it is imperative that we all follow these rules and isolate at home for a period of 10 days if asked to do so.

If we are to reduce the chances of further disruption to our pupils’ education, it is imperative that everybody follows this guidance closely

Please continue to monitor your child for symptoms of COVID-19:

·         A new continuous cough and/or

·         High temperature (37.8oC or above) and/or

·         Loss of, or change in, normal sense of taste or smell.

·         Headache, sore throat or runny nose.

Children displaying any of the above symptoms should not attend school. We would also wish to advise parents of the wider symptoms which the Delta variant can present, including; hay fever like symptoms; diarrhoea and/or an upset stomach.

We kindly request that parents are hyper-vigilant for any of these conditions and request that if your child presents with any they book a PCR test immediately.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 36

25th June, 2021

Firstly a reminder to those claiming on the PDG access grant that the deadline for claims is next Wednesday, 30th June. You can find out more about this grant here. We are awaiting information from Welsh Government with regards to the eligibility year groups for September 2021.  We assume that the eligibility will revert back to the original year groups of Reception and Year 3 in Primary, and Year 7 and 10 in Secondary until we have received the confirmed year groups.  The process of application is planned to be available from 1st August 2021, and will be an on-line form which can be accessed via the Caerphilly Website. Further information regarding this will be published on the Caerphilly website mid-July 2021.

Next week we have two staff training days, on the Thursday and Friday, so there should be no pupils in school on those two days.

This week we have held various transition events for our new pupils and parents, including visits to the Primary schools and an online event for new parents last night. We have made a video which we hope will be useful and you can view this on our YouTube channel or on the dedicated transition section of this website.

Can I remind you that as from September our expectations of uniform will move up a gear? You are aware we have taken what we consider to be a more liberal approach during the pandemic. The uniform list can be accessed here. Thank you for your support with this.

Uniform of course came up as a question at the Y6 parents' event. Other questions focussed on how we will be operating next year. I cannot be absolutely certain but I am hopeful we will be able to have students moving around the school to the specialist areas for all their lessons next year, and you know already we will be going back to the pre-pandemic day times, with a start at 8.50 am (be here from 8.40 am please) and a finish at 3.00 pm. We'll also hope to have the canteen fully operational. I will always make sure you are kept informed with updates on this website.

I am sure we are all hoping for a big win against Denmark this weekend. Come on, Wales!

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 35

18th June, 2021

Year Eleven, and some Year Ten, receive provisional GCSE results today. Please note if you have any issues with this you need to contact the school and Mr Coombes will be your first point of contact. You can find more information in the Qualifications section of this website. As these are provisional CDGs it is not appropriate for me to comment at this stage, but I am looking forward to doing so on the official results day in August!

Next week is a busy one with meetings in our Primary feeder schools and an online meeting for new parents on Thursday, which I am looking forward to very much. Anyone who has not received information about this should email transition@riscacom.net as soon as possible.

Earlier this week I enjoyed visiting some classes in Y8 and I was very impressed with what I saw in the lessons. We are still working under a fairly stringent Risk Assessment which means we are not able to do everything we want in terms of groupings, for example, but I was really pleased to see the students back in the art room, IT room, and drama studio as part of my 'learning walk'- and the pupils themselves were also clearly glad to be using these specialist rooms again!

At the time of writing we have still not yet had to ask a group to work at home since we all came back in March, but this still remains a possibility. Remember any positive tests or Covid related issues need to be reported using the dedicated email confidential@riscacom.net If you require additional testing kits please get in touch.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 34

11th June, 2021

I hope you had a good half term. Perhaps you saw some of our Year Eight and Miss Jones and Mr Mock in the papers or on TV in connection with the Careers Wales/Minecraft project we have been involved in. They made it into the Argus, Western Mail, BBC and ITV news and some other websites, too. You can see the link to the ITV news report here.

One of the participants, Ferne, also wrote this blog for us:

On Friday, me and the rest of Minecraft Club went to the historical site of Big Pit. We arrived at the Big Pit and  were amazed when we saw a massive screen outside connected to a laptop we later played on. We started the day with free gifts; a pen and a sticker. We then went straight into the Careers World in Minecraft they created where we had tasks to complete in the game. They had re-created some of Wales’s national landmarks, there was Tenby, Big Pit, Millennium Centre and Caernarfon Castle, the Coal Exchange and the Museum of Me where we put our awards and were able to teleport ourselves to those different locations.

We got to experience different jobs at the different locations, for example, at the theatre in the Millennium Centre we organised costumes and created a play. One of the tasks Millie, Seren and I worked on was to dig for coal underground in the Big Pit and then do a coal exchange for diamonds! Another, that Harry and Leshon did, was to complete a quiz in the Tenby world. One world was the Caernarfon Castle where you could organise a banquet. We went with Mr Mock, Miss Jones and our careers advisor, Amanda. There was a photographer there who took pictures of us fighting with these pretend Minecraft weapons they had and us playing the game with Big Pit in the background and Big Pit on the big screen also in the background. ITV was also there and towards the end they interviewed me, Maggie, Lee, and William and it got on the news on Monday evening [see link above]! They asked us  questions like ‘What is Minecraft?’, ‘How are we using it in school?’ etc.

Overall, the trip was amazing and made us think about our future in a fun way experiencing different jobs in Minecraft.

Thanks for this great write-up, Ferne, I am glad you all had a good day.

I am pleased to confirm, that Charlotte Thorne,  Jack McIntyre and Mia Garkut from Y10 have been appointed as prefects for the rest of this term. Congratulations to them! We have already had our first meeting. We may be looking to increase the team from September, so if you're in Y11 next term, keep an eye out for another advert!

At the time of writing we have still not yet had to ask a group to work at home since we all came back in March, but this still remains a possibility. Remember any positive tests or Covid related issues need to be reported using the dedicated email confidential@riscacom.net If you require additional testing kits please get in touch.

Finally Caerphilly CBC are consulting on possible new cycling/walking routes in or area and wold like to hear local opinion. Please click HERE for more information,

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 33

28th May, 2021

Next week is half term, and a good time to remind you of dates for the rest of the school year. We have two more staff training days when the school will be closed to pupils, on 1st and 2nd July.  On the 29th and 30th June we will be running online parents' evenings for Y7-10. For those of you with children in Y6, we are visiting  primary schools on 24th and 25th June and we'll be hosting an online event on June 24th  for parents.

This has been the last day in school for most of our Y11. I have already shared how impressed I have been with them, which I shared in this tweet earlier in the week. I'd also like to thank the staff who have been so supportive of all our pupils, but particularly in the context of the work they have done with Y11. Check on the Qualifications page for information regarding results this year.

Whilst we have been lucky and at the time of writing have had no reported cases of  coronavirus in school, we remain very cautious in our approach, as we are very keen to avoid having to send pupils home in the event of a positive Covid test. This is why we are still keeping pupils in bubbles after half term.  Nevertheless, they will be able to access practical facilities, including Science labs, Technology workshops and Expressive Arts rooms, as the fact the Y11 have gone gives us more space to manage this under the risk assessment. As the term moves on we may be able to make further changes, though events such as our end of term trips, celebration assemblies and sports awards will not be able to happen, we hope to be able to organise a Sports Day- probably on a year group basis.

With regard to September we are planning two timetable scenarios, one which has pupils moving to different parts of the school, and one which keeps them in bubbles as we do now. We are hopeful to be able to revert to the former. In any event the school day will go back to its pre-Covid day times, with a prompt start at 8.50 and an end at 3pm. You can access the draft calendar overview for next year HERE.

As mentioned last week we are having a crackdown on punctuality and uniform and this will be in earnest from straight after half term, so thanks for your support with this.

I hope everyone has a great week and that the sun stays out for us after all the bad weather we've had recently.

John Kendall

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 32

21st May, 2021

No one can deny the extraordinary part played by parents over the last year as they assisted their children with the remote learning set by schools. I know some of you enjoyed it, but for  many this was extremely difficult juggling other commitments. At the time of writing we have not yet had to ask a group to work at home since we all came back in March, but this still remains a possibility. Remember any positive tests or Covid related issues need to be reported using the dedicated email confidential@riscacom.net

With pupils back in- and we really hope there will be no need for closures from now on- I think one of the biggest roles parents can play in the home-school partnership is in connection with uniform and punctuality. We have a staggered start at the moment which is not ideal but it is required under the C-19 risk assessment. Most pupils are with us on time but a few still drift in after the start of lessons at 8.40. We are going to have a bit of a crackdown on this, and especially those who are regularly late. Names are taken every day, and the Wellbeing Leaders will impose sanctions. Being on time for school is a very reasonable expectation and a good habit to get in to, given that in the world of work poor timekeeping can be a sackable offence!

With regard to uniform we have been very understanding of the difficulties some people have had getting everything needed,  and we have been especially lenient towards the Y11 who will be leaving us soon. After half term we will be taking a firmer line, and we will especially want to start in September with very clear expectations The uniform policy, and the uniform itself, will not be different next term ( if we wanted change we would, of course, consult with you) but we have simplified the list and there will be more about this after half term.

Yes, it is nearly half term already! After half term we will continue to work within the risk assessment and to follow government guidelines. However, we are planning on allowing students to access more facilities such as science laboratories and other practical rooms, as this will be possible because Y11 will have left at that point. We will also resume the service of hot pasta meals at lunchtimes,

And talking of Y11, Friday 28th May will be their last day in school. Sadly we are unable to organise a final assembly when we can all be together, but Mr Canavan and colleagues are preparing a video message which we will show them. This year group has had a challenging few months, but they have risen to that challenge and we are very proud of them. We will of course continue to support them through to the next stage of their education.

Free School Meals

The next Free School Meal deliveries will take place in the week beginning 24th May 2021 in readiness for the Whitsun half term break. CCBC also offer a collection service if delivery is not suitable. To arrange this you'll need to email catering@caerphilly.gov.uk or call 01443 864055.

New Year 7, September 2021

We're writing to parents and carers of pupils currently in Y6, so keep an eye out for a letter if this concerns you, or if you have friends who are parents of children in the primary schools please can you make them aware.

LFD Tests

I hope everyone is keeping well. Remember, if you are doing the LFD tests, these should be completed on Sunday and Wednesday evenings , and reported as indicated on the guidance that comes with the kit. Always let us know of any positive tests using the confidential@riscacom.net address.

Face Coverings

At the time of writing we understand face coverings will still be required when social distancing is not possible inside the school buildings. Please provide your child with a covering for school each day. If this were to change we will let you know. Thank you.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 30

7th May, 2021

We have a good supply of Covid-19 LFD testing kits, and if you need more and have given consent for your child enough will be distributed this week to take us up to half term. We are now having to fund face coverings ourselves, so please ensure your son or daughter comes in with one every day to save us having to hand out more.

The final day of timetabled lessons for Y11 will be 28th May. After that they may be required to come in to complete vocational courses or to sort out transition to the next stage of their education, depending on need, and we'll let people know on an individual basis. I continue to be impressed by their attitude to their lessons and assessments- keep up the good work.

We are planning to host parent consultations online for Y7-10 on June 29th and 30th. We will provide further information soon after half term. We are also plannng on visiting Y6 in the Primary Schools, and we will be in touch with more information in due course. We had an excellent meeting with colleagues from the 'feeder' schools yesterday, and our links are as strong as ever.

Things are slowly changing in school but our emphasis remains on safety first and all the measures we have in place on our risk assessment remain. However, we are beginning to see after school activities return now, and as well as some extra lessons for pupils to ensure all work is up to date for assessment, I was delighted to see the Minecraft Club back again last week! Any pupils interested in learning more about this should get in touch with Miss Jones (IT) or Mr Mock (Cymraeg).

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 29

30th April 2021

Just a very brief update this week.

I am sure you are are all aware of the devastation caused by the fires on Machen Mountain. Instead of the usual assembly this week I shared this video message. These fires have become an all too common feature in our community during warm and dry weather, and the most recent one was one of the worst we have had; let's hope we can all work together to put a stop to this.

A reminder that pupils are not due back in school until Wednesday next week, as Monday is a Bank Holiday and Tuesday is a staff training day here. You can access the school calendar overview here.

I hope you enjoy the long weekend.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 28

23rd April 2021

I hope everyone is keeping safe and well. This fine weather certainly makes a difference!

I thought it would be useful this week to provide you with details of the action we will take in the event of one of our pupils testing positive after testing with one of the Lateral Flow Device (LFD) kits we are providing.

As you know from previous posts, these tests are available to all staff and students. Taking a test is optional. You can provide your consent if you have not already done so by following this link, and kits are handed out regularly. Tests should be done on Sunday and Wednesday evenings. Following the test you need to record the result as explained in the leaflet you receive with the pack, and if the test is positive you also need to email us as soon as possible on confidential@riscacom.net.

What will happen then is we will get back to you to confirm when your child was last in school. If this was within the last 48 hours (so this would NOT be the case following a Sunday evening test) we will ascertain what contacts your child has had. This will normally be the 'bubble' they are in at school, plus any other groups such as a bus or taxi, for example. The bubbles are homeroom (tutor) groups in KS3 and the Year Group in KS4. We will ask you to arrange a confirmatory Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test asap, and let us know the result.

We will then contact by text message the parents of those students identified in the above process and advise them of a positive test in their 'bubble' (we will not say who it is), and tell them they need to self isolate pending the confirmatory PCR test.  We will also post this on social media. If the PCR proves to also be positive we'll let people know they need to continue to self isolate until a set date, but if it is negative we will tell everyone they can return.

If the pupil is in Y10 or Y11 we will use the time between the LFD test and the PCR test to see if we can reduce the number of students who need to self isolate by carrying out a detailed 'track and trace' process using our class registers.

Pupils who need to self isolate will be provided with online work, and further information will be provided at the time.

I hope this reassures you. At the time of writing we have not yet had a positive test recorded at RCCS.

Finally I'd like to thank Miss Lauren Colborne who has been teaching in our Art Department during Mrs Carrington's maternity leave. Today is her last day at RCCS as Mrs Carrington returns on Monday. Lauren has done an amazing job at a very difficult time, as she joined us right at the start of the pandemic. We all wish her the very best for the next stage of her career. Diolch yn fawr a pob lwc!

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 27

16th April 2021

BACK TO SCHOOL

It was great to welcome everyone back to school this week. We are still operating under strict rules in terms of zones and bubbles, face coverings, hand hygiene and ventilation. All pupils have been issued with face coverings, and we would ask parents to ensure they bring one into school everyday as we do not have a limitless supply. I would also like to remind parents and carers about dropping off and collecting pupils. The correct area for this is behind the Leisure Centre and not in front of the school, which is a no waiting zone. Thank you.

LATERAL FLOW DEVICE (LFD) TESTS

We heard from Welsh Government earlier in the week that LFD test kits will now be offered to ALL students in secondary schools in Wales. These are already being distributed in KS4 to those who have given their consent. Parents/carers of pupils in Y7-9 who wish their child to participate can access further information HERE, print off and return the form to reception, or, better still, give consent electronically by completing  details online HERE. Once consent has been given, a kit will be issued (probably early next week) and the testing sequence can begin. Testing will be done on Wednesday and Sunday evenings.

SCHOOL DAY TIMES, 2021-22

Thanks to everyone who completed the recent survey. All things being equal we will revert to our usual day times in September 2021, with a start at 8.50 and the day ending at 3.00pm. this will of course be dependent on Coronavirus regulations in force at that time.

SCHOOL DATES FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR

We have now finalised all our PL (staff training) days for the year; these will be on May 4th, July 1st, and July 2nd. Half term is the week beginning 31st May, and the last day of term is Tuesday 20th July. You can see the updated Year-At-A-Glance Calendar here.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 24

19th March 2021

It has been great to have Y11 and Y10 back in school this week! Attendance has been excellent. They have settled back in really quickly just as we expected and Y11 are hard at work preparing for the qualifications which will be awarded in the summer. Please check our dedicated page for the latest updates.

Next week we will see our key stage three pupils. They will attend for a one day ‘check in’ session during the week beginning Monday 22nd, in line with the Welsh Government guidance. Year 9 will be in on Monday 22nd, Year 8 on Tuesday 23rd, and Year 7 on Wednesday 24th. The arrangements will be broadly the same as before Christmas, using the same entrances and zones in the school, and the same day times. School transport will be running as before, and you can find the bus timetables here. Please wear a face covering if travelling by bus or taxi. Unfortunately we are not able to provide food so please bring your own. Please attend in school uniform, but if this is not possible or you have any other queries do not hesitate to contact Mr Willaims gwilliams@riscacom.net for Y9, Mrs Weston hweston@riscacom.net for Y8, and Mr Lloyd, hlloyd@riscacom.net for Y7.

Along with many others in the UK, we will be holding a minute of silent reflection at 12 noon on Tuesday 23rd March. This will be observed across the school, and a small group of us will assemble in the Covid Memorial Garden in the Quad at 11.55am to mark this important event.

Next week will be our final message for the term and I hope to be able to confirm that we will be welcoming all pupils back as from the first day of the summer term, Monday 12th April. Broadly speaking, we are expecting the school to operate as it did before Christmas.

Mrs Vanessa Littlewood

We were devastated to learn on Monday morning that our friend and colleague, Vanessa Littlewood, had passed away after a short illness. Vanessa worked at Risca for many years as a teaching assistant and supported many of our students making a real difference in their lives. Recently she had keenly embraced the remote learning we have all been involved in and set a great example to us all. Our thoughts are wih Vanessa's family at this sad time.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 23

12th March 2021

BACK TO SCHOOL

It seems certain that later today the First Minister will confirm we can have our Y11 pupils back in school on Monday! Everyone here at the school is looking forward to this. All the information can be found in the update below, dated 9th March. This update also includes information on the return for Y10 on Thursday 18th, and the check in days for Y7-9 in the final week of term. Please keep up with the remote learning until you return to school.

LATERAL FLOW TESTS (Y11 and Y10 ONLY)

The only additional update on this concerns lateral flow testing for coronavirus. Further to the message below, I can confirm we have NOT yet received the additional tests we need. I hope these will arrive later today. On Monday we will give all Y11 a letter and a consent form which parents and carers will need to sign and return if they wish their daughter/son to participate in the self administered testing programme. We will do the same with Y10 on the Thursday. These kits are only being offered to adults and KS4 students in schools in Wales. Once consent has been given, a kit will be issued, and the testing sequence can begin. Testing will be done on Wednesday and Sunday evenings.

You can also access that letter HERE and give consent electronically by completing this form once you have read the letter; this might be easier for many of you, and this would be our preference if possible. Thanks.

SCHOOL DAY TIMES, 2021-22

My final message today relates to the timing of the school day. Since September we have been operating on an earlier start and finish. We want to hear your views about this, so we can start in September 2021, all being well, with a full day (it has been curtailed since Sept 2020), and with the timings that best suit everyone. Click HERE to access the survey. Please note that all things being equal the amount of time spent in school will revert to last year; it is just the time of the start and end of the day we are interested in. Pupils and staff are also being consulted.

Take care and stay safe.

UPDATE FROM THE HEADTEACHER

9th March 2021

Following my update on Friday I am pleased to provide more detail about the return to school.

KEY STAGE FOUR

YEAR 11 should attend full time from Monday 15th March and YEAR 10 from Thursday 18th March. We are really looking forward to seeing you!

All pupils in these year groups should attend from those dates, unless:

Things will work pretty much as they did last term. You should arrive at school between 8.25 and 8.40, and enter via Reception (for Y11 students) or the door by the covered way (Y10). We will be there to make sure you know where to go. Sanitise or wash your hands, then go straight to the room for your first lesson which begins at 8.40. Everyone needs to wear a face covering (FC) at times when social distancing is not possible, unless they are medically exempt. This will now include inside most classrooms and indoor areas. We will have FCs for you if needed. Your timetable will be the same as before, using the same rooms, with the same teachers. The week beginning Monday 15th is a Timetable Week One.

Day times will be as follows. They are the same as you have been following for remote learning:

School transport will be running as before Christmas; you can find the bus timetables here. Please wear a face covering if travelling by bus or taxi. Unfortunately we are not able to provide food so please bring your own. Please attend in school uniform, but if this is not possible or you have any other queries do not hesitate to contact Mr Canavan, scanavan@riscacom.net for Y11 or Mr Huggett, jhuggett@riscacom.net for Y10.

LATERAL FLOW TESTING

As with other secondary schools in Wales we are due to take delivery of enough lateral flow tests for all KS4 students and RCCS staff to self administer at home. Administering these will be optional. If they arrive before the end of this week you will be invited in to collect a testing kit; if not they will be given to you in school. Testing will be done on Sunday and Wednesday evenings and further information will of course be provided, including how to report the test results and what to do next.

You can find out more about these tests HERE

KEY STAGE THREE

I was delighted to get confirmation that we will also be able to see our KS3 pupils before Easter! Pupils from these year groups will each attend for a one day ‘check in’ session during the week beginning Monday 22nd, in line with the Welsh Government guidance. YEAR 9 will be in on Monday 22nd, YEAR 8 on Tuesday 23rd, and YEAR 7 on Wednesday 24th. The arrangements will be broadly the same as before Christmas, using the same entrances and zones in the school, and the same day times (see above).

REMINDER

Please be aware that all the above arrangements are reliant on the First Minister confirming things on March 12th, and are therefore subject to change. We expect to provide a further update on Friday.

Stay safe everyone, take care, and hopefully we will see you soon. Meanwhile, you must keep up with your remote learning!

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 22

5th March 2021

I hope everyone is keeping safe and well.

Following the announcement from Welsh Government earlier this week  I am pleased to confirm we now expect to be welcoming Y11 back to school from Monday 15th March and Year 10 from Thursday March 18th. We are really looking forward to seeing them again! We are also hoping to see our KS3 pupils before Easter. We are planning for pupils from these year groups to attend for a one day ‘check in’ session during the week beginning Monday 22nd, in line with the Welsh Government guidance. We hope to have Y9 in on Monday 22nd, Year 8 on Tuesday 23rd, and Y7 on Wednesday 24th.

We will provide full details early next week and these will of course be subject to Welsh Government confirmation on March 12th.

Meanwhile, it is really important that pupils continue with the remote learning! I was so pleased to see from our recent analysis that over 30% of our students engaged even better with online learning during February than they had done in January- a testament to their resilience and commitment. Well done!

Take care and stay safe. Check back for more information next week.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 21

26th February 2021

I hope everyone had a good half term break.

Following the recent announcements from the Welsh Government I am pleased to say we are now planning to welcome back more pupils into the school. As yet, I have no definitive arrangements to share with you but I'd like to give you an idea of how this might work.

Up until Monday 15th March it seems certain that things will remain as they are. If you hear or read things in the media be careful not be be confused when they are talking about arrangements in England. It is vital all pupils continue to engage with the remote learning. This applies to all pupils. Y11 need to be especially attentive to their studies as they will be awarded grades based on the quality of work they have done, and the work they continue to do over the next few months. You can read more about this in the Qualifications Section of this website, which also includes information on when results will be issued this summer.

For the fortnight beginning the 15th we hope to be able to have Y11 pupils back in the building. Whether this will be all together, or perhaps on a rota system, remains to be seen, as we have not yet received the guidance from the Welsh Government. This guidance will also give us an indication of whether we have any other pupils in during that fortnight, especially perhaps those who are due to be awarded specific qualifications this summer

We are taking delivery of a number of C-19 testing kits. We are currently planning to distribute these to families in the week prior to the 15th to enable pupils to take a test confirming they are negative before they come in on the Monday. Staff will also be able to take these tests.

FInal arrangements regarding the return of pupils, and the distribution and the self administration of the tests, will be confirmed as soon as we are able to do so.

We would then hope to see the return of other pupils after Easter. How this would be managed also remains to be seen but I can assure you we will always put the safety of the community first, and follow national and local guidance.

I've included a link to this week's Assembly. Find out why there is an extra room in the head's office, check out the refurbishment of R3, and have time to reflect in the Covid Memorial Garden.

I understand it is frustrating that uncertainties remain, but I would rather share what I know with you than say nothing.

Take care, stay safe, and let's hope for a good win on Saturday!

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 20

11th February 2021

I can hardly believe it is half way through the school year and this is message number twenty already! I want to start by thanking you for your support and encouragement throughout this difficult time. I do know how tough it has been for many people, and whilst we have all been impressed by the attitude and resilience of the pupils, I do think the parents and carers also deserve huge credit. What we all want, though, is to be back in school. I have no further information on that today, but as always we are committed to letting you know as soon as we have more news.

This week's message comes out on Thursday as tomorrow we have a training day so half term begins for pupils at the end of the school day today. We have a further training day on Monday 22nd February, so term will not resume until Tuesday, 23rd February. I hope you all get the chance to have a decent break.

Year 11 will be aware from a text on Tuesday about an update from Qualifications Wales; if you missed it, you can find it on our dedicated webpage.

Internet safety is obviously of crucial importance, now more than ever. Some of our senior pupils attended an on line meeting on Tuesday and I have had this report form Bethan, our Head Prefect:-

The event was run by ‘Wise Kids’ and had a board of different experts and teachers discussing how to stay safe online from different schools across Wales. The event was run to mark Safer Internet Day 2021 on the 9th of February. With a range of different schools attending, it was packed with lots of helpful knowledge. We learnt how to identify a scam, how to fact check and how to tell if someone is manipulating you online. We also found out where is best to report online concerns. Thanks to Miss Bawler for inviting us! The pupils involved were all from the Y11 prefect team: Derya, Nazifa, Cole, Chloe and myself.

Remember, Miss Bawler is running an event for parents later this month with colleagues on digital learning, and I am sure internet safety will be covered within that.  You can sign up by clicking on the link below, and then once signed up you will be sent a link via email to the Teams Webinar which is 6pm Wednesday 24th February. We'll send out a reminder nearer the time as well.

If you're in Y7 remember Mr Lloyd does a podcast each week, and these can be found on this website on the Year Seven page, or if you search for RCCS on Spotify you can listen on that platform. You don't have to be in Y7 to enjoy these, of course! This week Mr Oliver is reading from the Jungle Book and there are lots of shout outs to pupils as well.

Finally, I've included a link to this week's Assembly which is mainly for pupils but  I think parents and others may enjoy it, too. The Assembly is held on-line every Thursday at 2.15pm. As well as some interesting facts about some of the people in our Risca family (do you know whose father played professional football for Wolves and Spurs for example?) there are some stunning photos of the local area under snow, and great comments from our pupils which they completed as part of a wellbeing challenge in RE during January.

ALSO NEW TODAY:        YEAR ELEVEN UPDATE     YEAR SEVEN PODCAST

Despite all the constraints and pressure we are under, time seems to be flying by! February is upon us already, the daffodils will soon be out, and for many of us this means one thing; the Six Nations will soon be under way! Let's hope the tournament can go ahead without too much disruption. How do you think Wales will get on this year? Let's be optimistic!

We were saddened to hear of the death of Captain Sir Tom Moore earlier this week. He has been an inspiration to many, and you probably know he features in the mural in our Covid Memorial Garden.

I'm delighted that Miss Bawler, our Head of IT, is going to be running some training on digital learning for parents. These sessions will explain how you can support your child, and will be suitable for everyone whether you are an experienced user of IT or a lot less confident. You can sign up by clicking on the link below, and then once signed up you will be sent a link via email to the Teams Webinar which is 6pm Wednesday 24th February. We'll send out a reminder nearer the time as well.

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/139821290243

Meanwhile I continue to be impressed by the work I am seeing from our students, and you will be more aware then ever of what they are doing 'at school', given the nature of the way we are currently working. Please do get in touch, though, if you have concerns. We are aware we have postponed parents' evenings until the summer term, but this does not mean you cannot talk with us about your child's progress.

Finally, a reminder that we have two staff professional learning days on 12th and 22nd February, so there will be no remote learning provided or teachers or TAs in virtual classrooms on those days, and the school will be closed over half term as usual.

I will, of course, update as soon as any information is available about a return to school.

Take care and stay safe.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 18

29th January 2021

A brief update today, just to let you know that the Welsh Government has confirmed schools will remain closed to all but children of critical workers and those deemed to be vulnerable until at least after half term, as we expected. After that it is likely there'll  be a flexible and phased return, with the emphasis on younger children in the first instance. We will always make sure you are updated when we are.

Please note that we have two staff professional learning days on 12th and 22nd February, so there will be no remote learning provided or teachers or TAs in virtual classrooms on those days.

Please check the qualifications page for a further update, and the learning page for a reminder of our approach to remote learning, the daily lesson schedule, and the codes needed to access lessons and the weekly assembly on Thursdays. Next week is a Timetable Week Two.

Can I remind you that we are looking for ex-Risca Comp pupils to join our alumni group? This is a project whereby former students can inspire and support our current ones, and we are pleased to be part of a pilot project with Welsh Govenrment and Careers Wales. You can find out more and get contact details here.

These continue to be difficult times, and I am reassured that our community remains resilient, understanding, and supportive.

Take care and stay safe.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 17

22nd January 2021

I hope you are all keeping safe and well. Thanks to everyone who completed the survey recently. I have provided feedback in the short video below which I hope you'll find useful.

I am sure you are all aware of the announcement from the Minister about qualifications for this summer. I think this is a sensible approach, and one we have in fact been expecting from the outset. This is why we have encouraged Y11 to engage with all the tasks they are being set, and it is important this continues over the weeks and months to come. You can fnd out more in our qualifications section.

Mr Lloyd is making a weekly podcast, and you can find this on the Y7 page or by searching for Risca CCS on Spotify- do give it a listen, it includes messages of encouragement from a number of teachers.

There have been some minor hiccups with the new KS3 timetable, but all should be sorted now. From next week we are going to add an additional slot at 2.15 every Thursday. This will be an assembly led by the wellbeing leader and/or senior staff. It may be prerecorded or live, and pupils should attend via the google classroom code for their year group, which you can find on the Pupils page of this website.

Finally, we already have a staff training day arranged for Friday 12th February. You may remember we postponed two last term and we are now moving one of these to Monday 22nd February.  These two dates fall either side of half term. There will be no in-school provision or remote learning on either of these days.

Take care everyone and stay safe.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 16

15th January 2021

I hope you are all keeping safe and well.

As I explained last week we would like to get feedback from you as we did last year by asking you to complete a short survey. These surveys help us to get a feel for how things are going for you. We have already received some feedback, and we’re really pleased that most of you are happy with the support we are providing.

Of course some people have shared concerns with us, and we welcome that. These can be difficult to manage, because, quite understandably, they are often contradictory, and if we changed things based on one or two comments we would find we have upset someone else. One person will say there is too much work, another will say there is too little. One will say they prefer a synchronous approach, another that they need flexibility for their child to access lessons at different times. This is to be expected, but one thing we are committed to doing is being adaptable, listening to your views and making changes when they are needed.  Can I take this opportunity to remind you, however, that we are unable to respond to comments on social media or to any messages from an unverified email account for safeguarding and data protection reasons?

You can find the link to the survey at the bottom of this message.

As part of our ongoing review we are changing the way we deliver the curriculum in key stage three, and there will now be an amended timetable for some of the pupils. Subjects will remain the same as we want all our pupils have a balanced and varied curriculum. Classcharts will be amended over the weekend, but you can access all key stage three timetables on the dedicated learning page and get a more detailed update here.

We are always prepared to correct any errors. Early in the week a number of pupils were given negative Classcharts points by mistake. This has since been rectified and all these have now been deleted, and we have apologised for any upset caused.

Wellbeing leaders have updated their web pages this week. Y7 have a podcast from Mr Lloyd, Y8 have a message and presentation from Mrs Weston, Y10 have a video from Mr Huggett and Y11 have an update on Crosskeys College from Mr Canavan following last week's live assembly. Mr Williams will be updating the Y9 web page shortly with information on the Options process and he's holding a live assembly later today. You can visit the year group pages via this link.

Take care everyone and stay safe.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 15

8th January 2021

We have woken up this morning to the news that schools sites will remain closed to pupils until the end of January for certain, and probably until the end of half term. We will base our planning on the later date, whilst hoping we can perhaps get some pupils back before then.

You are all familiar with the arrangements we have in place for home learning. Like all schools, we do have areas we need to improve on. We are providing paper resources for some pupils but this system needs to be streamlined, and ideally we need to try to provide everyone with the capacity to work on line if possible. We need to have better information about which of our pupils are engaging with the work and how we support when they are not. This will include parental surveys which were very useful for us last year, so thanks in advance for providing us with that feedback. I think we also need to give some of you a little more help with the classcharts app. You know I am always keen to be positive- which indeed I am, and with the vaccine on its way I am very optimistic- but we also need to acknowledge the areas in which we could do better.

As for last year, the wellbeing of our community comes first, and that includes pupils, parents, and staff. I am very aware of how difficult the situation is. But if anyone has any concerns they must not be afraid to raise them in a calm and measured manner, and that means all of us. If we are worried about a child's engagement we will contact parents and carers. If you as a parent have concerns, you need to let us know. If you are a student and have worries or anxieties you must share them with the appropriate people.

Year Eleven students may be worried about the arrangements for how you will be awarded qualifications. As I said in my video (see below) you must understand that everyone is in the same position; you will not be disadvantaged and indeed we will not let you be disadvantaged. As well as the qualifications page which Mr Coombes keeps regularly updated, there is also now a dedicated Y11 page which Mr Canavan and his team will use to provide information and to reassure you.

My advice has been consistent; keep learning, complete the work to the best of your ability, ask if you are unsure, and stay safe. This applies to all of our pupils. Pob lwc!

If you are a critical worker and need your child to attend school, please scroll down to the information contained in our previous updates.

I hope you are all ok, that you are keeping yourselves safe and that you are clear about the situation regarding the next few weeks. My commitment as ever is to keep you updated and to support as best I can. I am lucky to have an amazing staff team here and to be the leader of a school in a community which has become very special to me.

UPDATE FROM THE HEADTEACHER

Head's message to pupils, 6th January 2021

UPDATE FROM THE HEADTEACHER

4th January 2021

In my last message on Saturday (see below) I told you I thought it highly likely that pupils would continue to learn from home for the whole of the first week and it has now been confirmed by Welsh Government that this will in fact be the case until Monday 18th January

We will be monitoring the engagement of pupils over the next couple of weeks, and I think we may even need to be prepared for this period of home learning to be extended, so please do all you can to motivate and support your child to undertake the work set. Please see the relevant section of our website for information about how we go about organising learning at home. I will keep you updated as and when more information becomes available.

As I mentioned in my previous post, if you are a key worker, and accessed the Hub provision here or elsewhere during 2020 we will provide your child with a place to work here at school from Wednesday 6th January, during school hours (8.25-14.15). Please note this must be pre-booked by contacting us on this dedicated in box: keyworker@riscacom.net

If your child attends our ASC Centre and you need further advice or support, please email Mrs Howells, dhowells@riscacom.net, and if your child has additional learning needs and you need specific advice, please get in touch with Mrs Coles, lcoles@riscacom.net. For general enquiries contact your child's wellbeing leader (year head) and for subject specific advice, the appropriate principal or lead teacher (details here).

I was very encouraged by the messages of support we received after posting our last message, and would like to thank you again for your understanding at this difficult time.

Stay home, stay safe.

UPDATE FROM THE HEADTEACHER

2nd January 2021

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a great Christmas. We had some really good news about the vaccine last week, but there is still clearly a long way to go until we can say we have defeated this virus, and the information we have had about the new variant is a major cause for concern.

In my last message (see below) I told you we’d be asking most pupils to work from home at the start of the week. I think it is now highly likely that this will be the case for the whole week. I have been in discussions with colleagues in other schools and of course with senior staff here at RCCS over the last week or so. There is a meeting scheduled for Monday at which I hope to be given further information about the general situation in our part of the country but rather than wait until then I thought it wise to let you know today.

Please see the relevant section of our website for information about how we go about organising learning at home, though I am sure you are already familiar with this, and encourage your child(ren) to engage with the work set. I know this is not easy and I can assure you that if and when we can have our pupils in school, we will. As I said in my messages last term, I was very proud of how our school managed with everything last year, and very grateful to you for your support and understanding, but I do know how frustrating this can be.

If you are a key worker, and accessed the Hub provision here or elsewhere during 2020 we remain committed to providing your child with a place to work here at school from Wednesday 6th January, during school hours (8.25-14.15). Please email keyworker@riscacom.net as soon as possible so this can be arranged, as we will need advance notice. If your child attends our ASC Centre and you need further advice or support, please email Mrs Howells, dhowells@riscacom.net, and if your child has additional learning needs and you need specific advice, please get in touch with Mrs Coles, lcoles@riscacom.net. For general enquiries contact your child's wellbeing leader (year head) and for subject specific advice, the appropriate principal or lead teacher (details here)

Please continue to provide us with information regarding any positive Covid-19 tests or requests to self isolate using the dedicated inbox confidential@riscacom.net. This also helps us monitor the general situation regarding how the virus is spreading within our community.

I know this is not the start to 2021 that we would all have hoped for, and this is not the message I wanted to be writing, but I am genuinely optimistic about the year ahead.

Thank you all for your support.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 14

17th December 2020

Following the announcement from Welsh Government earlier today I can confirm that term will begin on Monday January 4th, but arrangements will be the same as for the last week of this term, so our pupils will initially be learning from home. You can find out more about how this is organised in the learning section of our website.

Following an update of the risk assessment, we hope to have pupils back in school for face to face learning as soon as we can, on or soon after Wednesday 6th January, and we will of course let you know details once they are confirmed.

You can read an update from Caerphilly's Chief Education Officer here and the joint statement form the Welsh Government and the Welsh Local Government Association here.

Please see below for an end of year video message from the headteacher.

We hope you all have a safe Christmas. Rest assured we will text you if we receive any further information over the holiday period.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 13

11th December 2020

It was confirmed yesterday that Welsh Government has decided that secondary schools and colleges will move to on-line learning for the last week of term, so the final day in school for pupils will now be today, Friday 11th December. You can read more about this decision here, and you can find details about how we deliver online learning  on the dedicated section of our website.

You will know that yesterday we had to contact a number of students in Y8 to tell them to self-isolate following a positive case in the school.  Please be aware that you could still be contacted by us with a similar message over the next few days if we have notice of further positive tests. Be wary of misinformation and only act on messages from our official channels , from Caerphilly CBC, Welsh Government, or the NHS Wales TTP service. Scroll down to the previous update for more information on self-isolation

Pupils, please keep learning! Your teachers will be available to support you. And please stay safe, and stay at home. The latest figure for our area (see below) are not looking very good at all. Remember, this is not an extra week of the Christmas holidays, but a week of secure learning.

There will be a final video update next week. Meanwhile, take care and stay safe.

You can read the latest letter from the Chief Education Officer HERE.

UPDATE 10th December 2020

POSITIVE TEST

 Dear Parent/Carer,

As you know from a recent text message, we learnt today that a Y8 pupil has tested positive for coronavirus. All those affected by this, which is broadly speaking pupils in class 8C, have now been informed by the school. These pupils must self isolate in the home for ten days since the last contact with the positive case, which was Monday 7th December. They will come out of isolation on the 18th. You can access details of how we organise learning during self isolation in the Learning section of this website

I know that this may cause you all some concern and this is completely understandable. However, I want to reassure you that all appropriate risk assessments and safety measures are in place throughout the school. These are being strictly followed to protect all pupils and staff and to limit the risk of any cross-contamination.

The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are:

·         fever (greater than 37.8°C);

·         new persistent/continuous cough; and/or

·         loss or change in sense of taste or smell.

If anyone in your household develops any of these symptoms, however mild, they need to stay at home, seek at test as soon as possible and follow the guidance at https://gov.wales/self-isolation-stay-home-guidance-households-possible-coronavirus. Further detail on how to apply for a test is provided at https://gov.wales/apply-coronavirus-covid-19-test or simply call the free phone number 119 between the hours of 7am to 11pm. Please make sure you keep us informed.

The process of testing and contact tracing is part of the ‘new normal’ where schools and settings are required to follow these guidelines carefully. The latest information on COVID-19 track trace system can be found on the Welsh Government’s website on https://gov.wales/education-settings-coronavirus-testing-and-contract-tracing-guidance

Self-isolation payments of £500 are available to parents and carers on low incomes who need to care for children (attending childcare or school up to Year 8, or those with complex additional needs up to the age of 25) who are self-isolating.  Further information on the criteria and application process for the Self-isolation support scheme is available. This letter may be required to evidence the need for your child to self-isolate.

Take care, everyone and thank you for your support, as always.

Head Teacher / Prifathro

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 12

7th December 2020

There was no update last Friday, instead we shared the news that we are rebuilding our Alumni Network, with the help of Careers Wales and support from the Valleys Task Force. This was something we set up a few years ago, but we had to step back for a while. Anyway, we are back on track with it now, and you can find out lots more on our dedicated web page. If you are a former pupils and would like to get involved, please do get in touch.

Last week we heard great news about a vaccine! This is no reason to lower our guard, however, and we must continue to observe the protocols we have in place in school and so must everyone in the wider community. I get the feeling there is still a way to go yet. Please ensure your child comes to school each day with a clean face covering unless, of course, you have informed the school he or she is exempt.

At the time of writing we have only had to ask one class and a small number of other contacts in Year Eight to self isolate, and they are now back. We recognise that whilst we have been very careful, we have also been very lucky. The important thing is we are all aware that our luck may continue, or alternatively things could change very quickly. I therefore think I should remind you of the procedures we have in place at RCCS. If your child is in school and is identified as a contact of a positive C-19 case (this is usually through the ‘bubble” which is the homeroom class in Y7-9, and the whole cohort in Y10 and 11, though it could be additional people depending on circumstances)  you will be contacted either by us or by Track and Trace and told your child has to stay at home and self-isolate from others in the home for 14 days. I need to add that this could happen after the end of term if we hear of a positive case in the first part of the holiday, and if the contact is on or after the 11th Decenber the period of isolation would  include Christmas Day. All communication is likely to be via text message.

It has been confirmed today that Caerphilly CBC has decided that schools will move to on-line learning for the last two days of term, so the final day in school will now be Wednesday 16th December. This will be a non-uniform/Christmas jumper day at RCCS. Please see this letter from the Chief Education Officer which provides further details. I fully support this decision. We will move to blended learning for the 17th and 18th and you can find details on the Learning section of our website.

Take care and stay safe.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 11

27th November 2020

Year Eleven autumn assessments begin next week and you can find all you need in the Qualifications section of this website. Good luck to everyone! Most of you have worked very hard this term, you are well prepared, and I am sure you will do well.

It's been a week of updates! On Monday we received notification of a positive C-19 test in the school, and we went straight to the operational procedures we had prepared. We sent a text to all parents and followed it up with another text or a phone call to all families involved, and with a written statement on this website. You can see my update below if you missed it at the time. We knew this would happen sooner or later, and it will no doubt happen again at some point. I am very grateful to everyone who managed this situation, staff and pupils in school, and parents too. Information for pupils’ blended learning while they are self isolating can be found in the relevant section of this website

Then I issued another update on Tuesday via text message: this was connected to the wearing of face coverings, which you can also see below. And then yet another one yesterday about families of service personnel; this can be found in the Parents section of the website. We really don’t want to keep pinging your phones with news, but we do want to keep you informed and I am really grateful to parents who have complimented the school on how we communicate. This was also shared at the Governors’ Meeting we had on Monday when we reported back on a number of things happening in school.

Also mentioned at that meeting was the quick survey we carried out on the possibility of looking more formally at changing the timings of the day. 62% of respondents wanted us to look into this, 21% had no firm view, and 17% wanted us to leave things as they were before the pandemic. In the New Year we will conduct a proper consultation exercise within the community.

UPDATE 24th November 2020

FACE COVERINGS

Dear Parent/Carer,

You will probably have seen on the news there has been a change in approach to the use of face coverings in school. Until now we have “strongly advised” the wearing of face coverings when social distancing is not possible. We have now received this update:

The Welsh Government has updated its operational guidance on the use of face coverings in schools and colleges.

The guidance now states that face coverings should be worn:

The move follows the publication of SAGE evidence and a recent TAG report

We understand that you will need sufficient time to communicate these changes to staff, parents and pupils; however the expectation is that these changes will be implemented as quickly as possible over the coming weeks.

As a result of this we are asking all staff and pupils to follow these guidelines. For most this should not be an issue, for some this may take some getting used to.

Everyone was issued with three face coverings at the start of the year. We will issue additional ones to those that need them. This will be managed during the homeroom lesson tomorrow (Wednesday).

If your child has a reason not to wear a face covering, such as being exempt for medical purposes, please let us know by emailing the school as soon as you can.

Please ensure your child comes to school wearing a clean face covering, and if travelling on a bus, wears it before boarding.

Thank you for your support,

Yours sincerely,

John Kendall

UPDATE 23rd November 2020

POSITIVE TEST

 Dear Parent/Carer,

As you know from a recent text message, we learnt today that a pupil has tested positive for coronavirus. All members of class 8S and close contacts of the pupil will need to self-isolate until Thursday 3rd December. All these parents and carers have now been informed by the school, and they will be contacted separately with details of the blended learning arrangements, which you can also access on the Learning section of this website

I know that this may cause you all some concern and this is completely understandable. However, I want to reassure you that all appropriate risk assessments and safety measures are in place throughout the school. These are being strictly followed to protect all pupils and staff and to limit the risk of any cross-contamination.

 Yours sincerely,

John Kendall

Head Teacher / Prifathro

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 10

20th November 2020

The fact you are reading this means you have found the new school website! It seemed sensible to combine the original website with this new one we set up for Covid-19, so hopefully you can find all you need here. Please let us know if you want to make any suggestions. Our aim is to keep it simple but practical.

Covid-19 has brought about many changes in schools, one major one has been a move to an earlier start and finish to the school day. This is one of many changes we may want to consider keeping when the virus is finally defeated, so we have asked everyone to answer a simple question, and depending on the response we may go to a proper, formal consultation through the Governing Body. You can access the survey here. Many of you have already done so- thank you very much.

We have decided to defer the staff training day scheduled for January 4th until later in the year to maximise learning time, and also to enable us to devote quality time to looking at our approach to the Y11 assessments when they are finalised. We now have two "PL' days still to schedule, and we will give you as much notice as we can for the rescheduled dates. The updated calendar can be found here.

I have been impressed by the attitude of most our Y9 to the assessments they have been doing this week, and we're looking forward to analysing the results and to rewarding those pupils who have done especially well or who have made the most progress.

We have a vacancy for a School Receptionist. You can find further details in the relevant section of this website.

I am increasingly worried by the very small number of people who park on the double yellow lines outside school at the start and end of the day and who refuse to respond to our requests to  move away. This illegal parking poses a serious risk to pedestrians- our children. We have invested considerable resources in supervising safe access on and off the site, and whilst we recognise this is not perfect and is a lengthier process than some would like, we are doing the best we can within the constraints imposed on us by the school site. Please drop off and collect your children at the Leisure Centre bottom car park. We don't want to wait until someone gets hurt for people to get the message.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 9

13th November 2020

Today we have a non-uniform day to mark Children in Need Day, and we would encourage all those who can to make a donation through the BBC as we are not collecting cash on this occasion. Sadly, we are also not able to hold the usual staff netball match or do any of the other activities we would normally do, but we felt is was important, this year of all years, to get involved in some way at least.

It will come as no suprise to you if you have read my previous posts that I welcomed the decision announced by the Minister on Tuesday that GCSE qualifications will be determined by assessments over time rather than by a final examination in the summer. She has listened to the views of a number of people in coming to this decision, not least those of the young people themselves, and I know their wellbeing has been an important factor for her. It is important to recognise that this is a perfectly sound way of awarding qualifications and is not some sort of soft option for the pupils. What this should do is to allow us to assess students fairly based on the content they have covered, and they will not have to face the prospect of going into an exam unsure whether they have been taught the content in the syllabus, or to be taking a complex exam which has been set with lots of either/or sections in an attempt to be fair to all. Some of us are old enough to remember when GCSEs replaced O Levels and CSEs; times have changed since then. For many students they no longer mark the end of education, but they are a stepping stone to the next level. I hope we take this opportunity to think carefully about how and why we assess students at 16 years old once the threat and disruption of this terrible virus has gone. All information and updates about exams and qualifications can be found on our dedicated web page here.

On Wednesday we marked Armistice Day across the school with two minutes of silent reflection at 11.00am. This was followed by a video assembly in which I explained how our school- or rather the schools in Risca at those times- coped during the two word wars with reference to the old school logbooks, and I made the comparison to the strange times we are currently in, and our battle against the coronavirus.

We all heard really good news this week in terms of a possible vaccine being made available, but we are still following the strict protocols you are all aware of. If anyone has symptoms, or is waiting for a test, they must remain at home, and anyone who is required to self isolate must do so. This applies to all of us. It can be very frustrating, but it is non negotiable. We have a dedicated email which we ask you to use for all C-19 related information: confidential@riscacom.net

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 8

6th November 2020

This week we have had only Y7 and Y8 in school. Attendance to class has been excellent, and we’ve had a good week, helped no doubt by some decent weather after what was a pretty wet half term.

This has coincided with our reintroduction of practical PE, which has been very timely! We have also reintroduced food provision in the canteen after trialling arrangements with Y10 and 11 before the break. Food will be available to all students as from next week using the prepaid ordering system as outlined in previous posts on this website.

Across Wales students in Y9 and above have been working at home, and will return to school on Monday. I have seen some excellent work across all year groups, and pupils deserve credit for engaging so well with the home learning arrangements

We have been extraordinarily lucky in being one of the few secondary schools in our area not to have had to tell a class or group to stay at home yet. I must emphasise this is purely down to luck. We are under no illusions  though, and every day I am expecting to have to take action. It will happen at some point, I am certain, but we are in a good position to be able to provide home learning and support when it does.

In terms of in-school practice this is a good time to remind everyone of our expectations, though nothing has changed. We have a staggered start to school which is designed to suit our families who have children in more than one year group, so it is not rigid; arrival time is between 8.25 and 8.40. Please do not be later than 8.40, however, as this is the start of our first lesson. Pupils must use their designated entrance and remain in the zone or homeroom allocated to them unless they are out for break in their specific yard. Pupils should wash or sanitise their hands regularly and always on entering or leaving a room. We strongly advise masks should be worn inside when social distancing is not possible. The school day ends between 2.10-2.15. The enhanced supervision of the school site will continue as before; I think we are all used to the hi vis and two-way radios now!

On Tuesday we will find out the arrangements for how our Y11 pupils will be awarded qualifications. I won’t make the mistake of second guessing the outcome but I am hopeful that the recommendations to which we have added our own contributions will be accepted.

Next week the theme in the school is remembrance and I have made a video presentation for our assembly. Sadly there will be no service at Moriah Church this year, but we will still ensure we remember the sacrifice of those service men and women who have died in the service of their country.

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.”

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 7

HALF TERM

23rd October 2020

We learned on Monday that in Wales we will be going into a nationwide lockdown situation today at 6pm, until Monday 9th November. You can find more information on the Welsh Government website. Firstly, I’d like to wish you all the best with managing this situation in whatever circumstances you find yourself. For some it will be straightforward, for others I know it may be very difficult. I hope you all keep safe and stay well.

After half term we will be open to Y7 and Y8 only. I am sorry we will not have other pupils in for this week. Please don't think we think less of you or that you are somehow less important. This is a decision that has been made for reasons beyond our control.

If you are in Y9-11 you can find all you need to know as a parent or pupil on our dedicated home learning page here. Good luck, and work hard!  It’s worth pointing out that many of you will find yourselves working from home when you are adults in employment, so it’s good to get into that habit now! I can confirm that Year Nine exams have been put back to the week beginning 16th November, and you'll find general updates about both public and internal assessments on our Exams and Qualifications page

If you are in Y7 or Y8 it is business as usual! You will have the same lessons in the same rooms with the same teachers, the same breaks, the same transport arrangements. What will be different is that we are going ahead with our plans to reintroduce practical PE and to provide food from the canteen, as I explained in my update last week. Y7 parents should have received a letter explaining how this online system works. The first orders will be taken for food at first break on Monday 2nd, and the food will be available during the second break that day. With regard to PE, please make sure you come in kit on the days you have it. For the week after half term it’s Year Seven C, A, and O on Tuesday and R, I, and S on Thursday, and for Year Eight it’s C, A and O on Tuesday and R, I and S on Friday. We are also hoping to schedule in a lesson of practical Science for Y7.

I’d like to finish today by thanking the whole school community for how they have coped with this first half of term. I could not have a better team of staff here, the pupils have been incredibly resilient, and parents and carers supportive and understanding. It’s a great example of how good people come together to support each other during challenging times.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 6

16th October 2020

 Canteen

We contacted you earlier in the week about the reopening of the canteen. We’re trialling the new arrangements with Year 10 and 11 next week with a view to rolling this to to everyone after half term- you can access more information here.

GCSEs and Internal Exams

We will find out next week about the arrangements for GCSE qualifications in Wales for next summer; we will make sure our students are well prepared for whatever assessments and tests are agreed. I shared my view in an open letter to the minister last Saturday. Meanwhile exams and tests will continue to play a part in our assessment of all our pupils and how and what we teach them. Mr. Coombes has written to parents of pupils in Y9 who have exams coming up in November and you can access that and a link to the timetable here.

Surveys

Following staff and parent surveys, we are currently running a survey with our pupils and we will share these findings with you after half term. These surveys are very useful and really quick to set up and to complete. They provide us with useful and up-to-date feedback and we try to learn as much as we can from them.

Starting Comp

Time to hear from some other people! Here’s a blog from Ruby, one of our Y7s, about how she has found her first few weeks at RCCS!

I was a bit nervous for my first day of comprehensive as I knew it was going to be very different.

When I arrived, we were introduced to our classmates and we were shown to our class, 7R. Our teacher explained the rules and that we would be staying in the same classroom so we wouldn’t mix with other year groups. This was okay for me because I was used to being in the same classroom for every lesson in my primary. I thought this was a good idea as it might be hard for the pupils to remember their timetable, especially the pupils that did not come to the transition day.

Although staying in the same room was a good idea there is a negative side: we are not yet allowed to go to the cookery room and we are not yet allowed to take part in sport activities, however we do go on wellbeing walks around the school, they are really fun!

Since being in this school, I have really enjoyed art, this is because my teacher has taught us a lot of different techniques to help us make our drawings look more realistic. I also enjoy maths however, I am not a fan of fractions. I enjoy English, especially when we are writing horror or gothic stories as I can use my imagination to come up with better characters.

I really enjoy being at Risca Comprehensive as it is very friendly and the teachers are really welcoming.

And now here's Finn's reflections on his start here at RCCS:-

Hi, my name is Finn and on my first day in school I was very nervous because I had never been in school as big as this.  I was nervous to see if I was going to be in any of my friend’s classes. I wasn’t sure how this school would be because of how different the school I used to be in was. I didn’t know if I would have to make new friends but luckily I ended up with some of my friends in my class. I have also made some new friends too. When I found out I was in my friends class it made me feel very relieved and more comfortable in finding my new class.

When I was going into my first lesson I felt very nervous but my form teacher had also made me feel less worried. My first lesson was a history lesson and that made me feel a lot more comfortable in the school because I found the history lesson very interesting. I think that my favourite lesson is geography. I find geography fun because we learn about all over the world and cool events that have happened.  We have to try and find out what might have happened or where it might have been. I think that I have settled into this school very well. I quite like English doing story writing and diary writing.

I don’t really see a difference in how the breaks are shorter because I have never known any different.  We don’t move between classes but this is fine because we didn’t move classes in primary.

Thank you both for sharing your thoughts with us!

Half term begins next Friday at 2.15, and we are currently expecting term to resume on Monday 2nd November. Should there be any changes to that arrangement we will let you know as soon as we can.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 5

9th October 2020

A fairly brief update from me today.

Last week I mentioned we were postponing the Y8 parent’s evening and that we had cancelled the Y7 tutor evening and would be making contact by telephone instead.

We have also decided to postpone the staff training day we had planned for the Friday before half term. This is to make sure our students get the maximum tuition possible at this time; we will now hold it later in the summer term. We have updated our calendar which you can access HERE.

We are constantly reviewing our operational practice and there may be some changes after half term. We are trialling the reintroduction of practical PE lessons the week after next with our Y9 classes: please read the letter from Mr Knott HERE. We are also hoping to re-open the canteen after half term, though it will be in a limited way with a different way of working than what we were used to before the pandemic. More information will be provided next Friday.

I have been surprised to have received holiday request forms from one or two families. We are not able to grant permission for holidays while the borough is in lockdown.

Scotland have decided they will not run their equivalent of GCSEs as examinations in 2021. We are waiting to hear what will happen here in Wales, but I have already spoken to Y11 and told them to expect this may well be the case here too. It would be a big mistake to see this as some sort of let off! Quite the contrary, it will be even more important now to ensure students are doing their very best throughout the year, working hard, revising for assessments and tests. I have been impressed with the attitude of this year group, and I am sure they will rise to the challenge.

Finally, the wider prefect team met with myself and Mr Canavan yesterday. It was a very productive meeting. Here’s a message from our newly appointed Head Prefect!

Hi my name is Bethan Davies and I have recently been appointed Head Prefect here at Risca. Grace and Isobel, the deputies, and I met last week and again on Thursday with the wider team of ten, and we have lots of exciting plans that we would love to share with you soon. Our biggest priority will be to give every student a voice! We're setiing up a Twitter account @RCCS_Prefects20, so do give us a follow!

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 4

2nd October 2020

Fire Practice

Schools are very different places at the moment, but we are all getting used to the situation and life goes on! Often we have to adapt and change. This week we had a fire practice- but rather than all of us going out we rang the fire bell and talked through the routes we would take and where and how we would muster. We also went through our safe mode procedures.

Punctuality

Being punctual to school remains an important requirement for all of us. There is still some lateness from a small number of pupils, and we will be addressing this closely over the next week or so.

Parents’ Evenings

We had a Y7 Tutor Evening booked in for October 21st. This cannot now take place, but we will endeavour to contact all parents by phone for a check-in. We will not be holding the Y8 Parents’ Evening on the 9th November, and this is likely to be deferred to the summer term. We will be taking a decision on the Y11 Parents’ Evening scheduled for 1st December nearer the time

Prefects

Last week Mrs Madden and I interviewed Y11 candidates for the role of prefects and we have appointed Bethan Davies as the Head Prefect. Congratulations to her, She will be supported by two deputies, Grace East and Isobel Mears, and a wider team of seven: Will Robey, Derya Gok, Nazifa Torofdar, Cole Windsor, Chloe Kenvin, Havanna Cridge and Shannon Jones. They all impressed us when interviewed. Their jobs will be slightly different due to the restrictions in school at the moment, but they have a key leadership role in the school and I am looking forward to working with them.

Update from Caerphilly

Please see this letter from the Chief Education Officer

PDG Access Grant

If you have a child in Y7 or 10 and are eligible for free school meals because of the benefits or support payments that you currently receive, you should submit an application for the PDG Access Grant. Funding of £125 is available for eligible pupils in Year 10 and £200 for eligible pupils in Year 7. Full details of this funding are available on the Council website here, together with details of how to apply. Please note if you haven’t already submitted an application for free school meals this would need to be done first and eligibility confirmed.

Risca C-19 Volunteers

This local group is doing some superb work supporting the local community. If you are finding it difficult to make ends meet, please check out here how they may be able to help you.

Attendance Data

Finally, I have been asked to let you know that Welsh Government are implementing a new process for data collection on attendance. The data will be collected through the Welsh Government’s School Data Provisioning Service, which is currently used by Hwb. The following data will now be collected for the purpose of this project: UPN; Forename; Middle name(s); Surname; Gender; DOB; Home postcode; Ethnic background; Eligibility for free school meals; Additional learning needs; English as an additional language; and Attendance code for each half day session. This privacy notice provides further information on how the data will be used in the new process.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 3

25th September 2020

Hello everyone,

At the time of writing we have not yet had to ask a whole group to remain at home. This week's message comes from Assistant Headteacher, Mrs K Madden, and explains how we will arrange things should this be the case, and how we currently organise work for any individuals unable to be in school.

It was wonderful to welcome our pupils back;  I know that their teachers have been so impressed with the positive attitude to learning the majority have shown. We are still fully committed to ensuring that our pupils feel ‘re-connected, motivated and interested’ as we embark on this unique autumn term together. I want to share with you the planning that has been put in place if for example a child needs to self-isolate or if we need to ask a particular class or year group to self-isolate. Please be reassured that the system we have in place will ensure that any disruption to learning will be kept to a minimum and that all pupils will be supported if a self-isolation scenario arises.

If an individual child in KS3 needs to self - isolate they will be provided with a ‘Skills Package’ to work on. This programme of work will consolidate and help develop their skills in literacy, numeracy and ICT. They will be given a class code to use via google classroom (reminder video HERE) and if anyone needs paper copies their Wellbeing Leaders (year heads) will be able to assist with this. If an individual child in KS4 needs to self-isolate they will receive work directly from their subject teacher via google classroom or they will be provided with a textbook or revision guide.

If a situation occurs where a whole class or year group is asked to self-isolate we will move towards our blended learning approach. In this case pupils should stick to their normal timetable and access their lessons via the class charts app. Mrs Bawler has put a ‘how to’ video together to explain this process and you can access that HERE. Teachers will be submitting a variety of learning activities including ‘Live Lessons’ which pupils will be able to access in real time as well.

It has been a privilege to witness the resilience and adaptability of both pupils and staff around the school. I have had the pleasure of visiting many classrooms, albeit from a distance, where it was evident that there was a high level of learning and engagement taking place. My highlights so far have been ‘Science in a box’ and the uplifting music lessons that have taken place in all the ‘bubbles’ around the school. Even though the situation is ever-changing I know that RCCS will rise to the challenge; well done and thank you everybody!

Mrs K Madden, Assistant Headteacher.

Thank you Mrs Madden, and thank you Miss Bawler for the video guides.

CCBC have produced this really useful flowchart for parents, to help you decide how to manage your child's attendance/absence from school at this difficult time. I hope it helps.

Finally from me, we are not able to deliver normal assemblies at the current time, but I have recorded this message for our pupils to thank them, and to thank the staff, for how they have managed through these first four weeks.

Mr J Kendall, Head Teacher.

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 2

18th September 2020

Hello everyone.

Following last week's message and Tuesday's update we have had a positive case of C-19 identified within our community. Due to the fact that the family had been self isolating for some time and the pupil had not had symptoms the previous week in school we followed the advice that it was not necessary for other students to self-isolate on this occasion. We informed our community as soon as we could via text message yesterday. I would like to thank everyone for being so understanding and supportive.

Thanks to everyone, too, who completed the survey last week. Although 14% were unsure whether they were happy or not with the return to school arrangements, 82% said they were and only 4% said they were unhappy. We contacted those who wanted more information. I really do understand why some people are anxious and I have no problem with people sharing their concerns. Everyone wants the very best for their child and everyone wants their child to be safe.

It is therefore a little disappointing that some people still persist in sharing rumours and hearsay in the community. As a school we will only act on factual, verified information, and the action we take is always based on advice from the appropriate authorities, it is never a unilateral decision. Indeed, it would be foolish of us in the extreme to do otherwise. Unfortunately these rumours increase anxiety in others which is not helpful at such a difficult time. I would urge you to heed only information that comes from Welsh Government, the local authority, or the school itself.

We have made a few minor changes to our operational practice. Most will not directly affect parents but we are letting Y10 and 11 leave the site five minutes early to reduce congestion. In terms of arrival in the morning this is spread over a fifteen minute period. Pupils will be admitted through the appropriate entrance from just after 8.25. Please do ensure they are here to start by 8.40 at the latest; one or two are coming in late which disrupts the beginning of the lesson.

Some news for a change not directly linked to the strange circumstances we find ourselves in! I am looking to appoint four students in Y11 as prefects. These would be senior students who would have a specific role advising me on the concerns of the student body and making suggestions of how we can make our school even better. I need candidates to email me by noon on Monday, and I am looking forward to reading the applications.

And finally some wonderful news! Congratulations to Mrs Perry, our Lead Teacher of PE ,on the arrival of Theo Andrew, who was born on Wednesday. Mum and baby are doing well! Our best wishes to the whole family.

UPDATE FROM THE HEADTEACHER

15th September 2020

Hello everyone.

I wanted to let you know what would happen in the event of a child testing positive at our school.

The identity of the child will remain confidential.

All parents/carers will receive a message saying a case has been identified in the school. It is important we are transparent about this. This will also be posted on our Twitter and Facebook feeds.

All pupils who need to self isolate as a result of this will be informed by text message to parents/carers. Please be aware this message could come late in the evening or early morning. You may also receive separate notification from the track and trace team in terms of contact outside school.

This will be followed up with information about work to be completed at home for those required to self isolate.

We now have a dedicated mailbox for parents/carers to pass on information related to Covid-19 such as test results or if a family is self-isolating etc. It is confidential@riscacom.net and it will be monitored on weekdays between 8am and 8pm and checked each Sunday before 7pm.

Please send any general enquires or messages to the normal mailbox, risca@caerphilly.gov.uk

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEADTEACHER No 1

11th September 2020

Hello everyone,

Just a short message from me to end the week. This has been a challenging week for all of us I am sure, especially with the borough going into a local lockdown (see below), but I wanted to thank everyone for their understanding. Following a staggered start, we had all our pupils back on Wednesday and the systems we have set up have worked well. In cases where some amendments are needed, we are looking to tweak things, but on the whole our risk assessment and planning has been effective.

When things have not gone so well we have had to take steps, as I made clear we would in my earlier guidance. Breach of the COVID-19 protocols we have set up to protect us all must be followed and any infringement by any member of the community cannot be, and has not been, tolerated.

At the time of writing we have not had a confirmed case of COVID-19 in our community, and have not had to ask for any groups of pupils to remain at home. I must be honest and say I think we have been lucky, and I am not too sure how long this will remain the case. If there is a positive case identified I can assure you we will take the necessary steps as outlined in the official guidance. Safety will always come first.

I would be grateful if you would complete this very brief survey for us, so we can get a sense of how you feel about this week’s return to school.

Thank you.

John Kendall

An update from our head teacher.

July 17th 2020

A lot can happen in a week!  I learnt on Wednesday that we have been allocated two days at the start of the year for planning and preparation, therefore in common with most schools we will be holding these on 1st and 2nd of September to ensure everything is safe and ready for our pupils. Thursday 3rd will be a staff training day, and on Friday 4th we will have just Y7 in school.

We’re planning for  the second week to have Y7 and Y11 in on Monday, with Y10 joining them on Tuesday and the whole school back in on Wednesday 9th. The overview calendar has been updated accordingly- you can access it here.

As I say, a lot can happen in a week and an awful lot can happen over six weeks. No one can foresee how things will look on September 1st. It may be the country is running almost as it was before the C-19 crisis started, or we could be in another lockdown situation. Our job is to be able to react to either of these situations and anything in between. We have a number of plans in place, but rather than complicate things we have decided to hold back with precise details until towards the end of August. What I will say is that the safety and wellbeing of the school community comes first. We have staffing and a timetable in place ready, which includes all subjects, including options in Y10 and Y11. What we do not yet know is the logistics, so we have a “normal” scenario as well as one which drastically reduces movement of pupils around the school and keeps our year groups in discrete ‘bubbles’ for lessons and breaks.

As you know we are not hosting a normal results day this year, and GCSE exam grades will be emailed on the morning of Thursday, August 20th. Good luck to everybody, and don’t forget you can ring or email us if you need to talk.

I hope you all get some rest and relaxation over the summer. I know some in our community have had to cope with immense pressure during this time; I can assure you we will do all we can as a school to support our pupils.

I have been a teacher for 34 years and the headteacher of our school for eleven years, and I have never known a more difficult time, nor one in which I have felt better supported by my colleagues, our pupils, governors and the wider school community.

Whatever September and the new academic year brings, we will be ready for it.

Head Teacher     Mr J Kendall      jkendall@riscacom.net

An update from our head teacher.

Friday 10th July 2020

The Welsh Government confirmed yesterday that term will begin for schools in Wales on Tuesday 1st September, and have made it clear that a gradual or staggered start date for pupils may be appropriate in the first couple of weeks. Further guidance will be made available to us on Monday. I can confirm that Tuesday 1st September will be a staff training day at RCCS, as is usually the case with the first day of the school year, and it is highly likely we will start on Wednesday 2nd September with Y7 only. We will provide further information in my final message of the term next week.

We have now seen all the pupils who made the decision to return to school, and I want to thank everyone who made this run so smoothly, the parents, staff, and above all the pupils themselves who must have found it all very strange. They handled the situation really well. Next week we will be holding the second sessions for everyone, as indicated on the website in the “Coming Back” section. You come in at the same time, use the same drop off and entrance as you did for your first visit. We can’t wait to see you again!

A quick staffing update now, and we are saying goodbye to three teachers this year. Mrs Bird has been covering a maternity leave in English and History, and we are indebted to her for her hard work. She has been such a dedicated member of our team at this difficult time and we are sorry to lose her. Good luck at your new school! Miss Green joined RCCS as a drama teacher in 2002 and has inspired a love of the theatre in a generation of young people. Her productions for the Shakespeare Festival were constantly brilliant and will remain in the memories of those who took part for ever. She also made a huge contribution introducing the skills qualifications to the curriculum. We wish her all the best in her new ventures. Mr  Lougher joined us in 1995. His commitment to the school has been outstanding, and he made a number of innovations within the Maths department not least in the field of IT and right up until this term he was trialling new methods during the lockdown. We wish him a long and happy retirement, and thank him for his service.

Next term we welcome the following new teachers to Team Risca:

            Megan Edmunds (PE- maternity cover)

Paul Alley (Maths)

Claire Tucker (Expressive Arts- Drama)

Kelly Lloyd- Hughes (Maths)

Rhodri Jenkins (Maths)

Megan Howells (Geography)

We are looking forward to working with them!

I’ll be back next week with a final update for the term and with confirmation of arrangements for the start of September. See you then.

An update from our head teacher.

3rd July 2020

Hello everyone

It was great to welcome many of our students in Y10 and Y9 back into school this week! It felt a lot like a September- lots of people had grown (and certainly their hair had in some cases) and there was a really positive atmosphere. In many ways it was very different though, as we have adopted a very cautious approach. Senior staff were very visible out and about in their hi viz and the whole school was fully linked up by two way radio to ensure we could monitor everything really closely. Talking to pupils as they left, I know nearly everyone had a positive experience. I need to say again that this is not a substitute for the learning taking place at home, but it certainly enhanced that, and the human contact was important for all of us.

Next week it’s the turn of Y8 and Y7- everyone has been contacted and you should know your time, drop-off point, and entrance.

For the final week we are planning on having two half year groups in at a time- in separate rooms of course, using the same room as you had your first sessions in. We really want to see everyone in again! Please come at the same time, using the same drop off etc as before. There is an explanation on the “Coming Back” section of the school website which explains what day you need to be in.

As far as September is concerned we are planning for a full return to school as normal. Important point here- we are planning for this but not necessarily expecting it. So we have our timetable ready, our staffing in place, form groups, rooms, rotas, and all the usual stuff that goes with a September return. It would be foolish not to do this. But how school will actually look in  September remains to be seen. We are expecting the first day of term to be staff training day, as usual, and we are hoping to have the second day for Y7 only. But please note these are plans that remain to be confirmed. Uniform has caused some anxiety, especially for new parents. I just want to be sensible about this. So we are saying don’t buy uniform or PE kit  yet, just in case we are in a situation where it is not required; I would hate for people to be out of pocket. But once we have a clearer idea of plans, we will let you know.

There is an important update for Y11 on the “Exams and Qualifications" section of the website- please make sure you have a look.

Finally, we are having our first full Governors’ meeting next week since lockdown. It will be on-line, of course. I am looking forward to updating the team.

Take care everyone and stay safe.

An update from our head teacher.

Hi everyone,

So the phone calls have all been made, and we have spoken with nearly all our families to discuss your return to school. If you have any concerns, please email return@riscacom.net.

I want to thank our team here at RCCS for helping complete this mammoth task, and to parents for their understanding. More than three quarters of you will be coming into school at some point over the next fortnight. What do you need to do? Well, you need to know which car park is your drop-off zone if coming by car, and the entrance point where you will be met- that’s just pupils please, no adults- and of course your start time. There’s a map of the entrances on the website. You need to wear comfortable clothes and bring some food and drink and a pencil case. That, and an enthusiastic attitude, and a clear focus on safety, especially hand hygiene and physical distancing. We really can’t wait to see you!

If you’re not in, or on the days you’re not in, you need to keep up with the home learning.

We’ve not finalised our approach for week three yet, as we want to see how this first week goes, but by this time next week I hope to be able to give you more information. As you know, the term will now end officially on 17th July.

And what about September? Well, I summed up my feelings in this Tweet yesterday. It’s unsettling not to be sure of what will happen, but that is the reality. We’ll make sure our final message of the term on the 17th leaves you with as much information as we have at the time. The secret is communication and our website will remain active over the summer. We’ll email and text as usual when we have more details. It’s especially tough for our new Y7 and we are meeting you at one to one meetings on the 10th and 13th July.

I’ll be back next week with another update. Meanwhile, stay safe and take care.

An update from our head teacher.

19th June 2020

Hi everyone.

Just a quick update from me this week. Firstly a message to Y6 parents and children. We’re arranging one to one meetings on Friday 10th and Monday 13th July and you’ll be contacted soon about these. Any issues, please email transition@riscacom.net.

Next, Y11. It was nice to join an online meeting with you on Wednesday. Crosskeys College are working very closely with us to sort things ready for next year, and I am grateful to them for all they’re doing to support you. We’ll provide information about how you’ll get your results just as soon as we have it. Any questions, please feel free to email Mrs Coles or Mr Coombes.

For everyone else, as you know, you’re all being given an option to come into school for a day and you’ll have a phone call about that soon if you’ve not already had one. We are really looking forward to seeing you again! There’s a dedicated email address for any issues connected with this, it’s return@riscacom.net If you have not been contacted by the end of Tuesday please get back to us.

We’re also working on a brief report for all our students, and that will be with you by the end of the school year.

Next week is the last week of the Hub. There are so many people to thank in connection with this, and I made a separate video with Mrs Armishaw, my co-leader, to pass on our gratitude. It’s been an amazing team effort and we’ll miss it!

Lastly, I must say yet again that the focus remains on home learning. We know it has not been perfect, but engagement levels have been pleasing, and many of you have really taken to this and I’ve seen some awesome examples of work that’s been completed. Keep going!

Just what lies ahead remains uncertain but I am committed to keeping you informed at all times. Your support as a community has been fantastic, thank you all! We’ll be back next Friday, if not before- see you then!

ADDITIONAL LINK: Letter from Caerphilly CBC to all parents and carers.

JUNE 17th 2020

We will shortly be contacting you by phone with individual information about your child/children's return to school. In the meantime please re-read the message or re-watch the video from the head issued last Friday which you can see below this update We can also now confirm the days organised for each year group for the first fortnight are as follows. Your child will be invited to attend just one of these days.

Tue 30th and Wed 1st: Y10

Thu 2nd and Fri 3rd: Y9

Mon 6th and Tue 7th: Y8

Wed 8th and Thu 9th: Y7

Fri 10th and Mon 13th: Y6 (one to one meetings)

Please note when we contact you we are happy to answer any questions but we will not be able to offer you an alternative time or day to the one you will be given. Thanks for your understanding. When we ring you will be told your start and end time, which car park you should use (if needed) and which entrance you should come in by; we have drawn up a plan to help you with that, which you can access here.

If you have not been contacted by 3pm on Tuesday, 23rd June, please email return@riscacom.net and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Thank you.

Here are some FAQs we've been hearing:-

That date/time is not convenient. Can it be changed?

We are sorry, but we cannot change any of the planned arrangements. This would have an impact on other groups, which have been finalised.

Am I able to change my mind in the future?

Yes, we have given all children a place in a group regardless of whether you currently intend for them to return. This place will remain available until the summer break. However, we will require notice 24hrs prior to attending their designated session if you had previously indicated that they would not be attending.

Will the school buses be running?

We are not sure of this at the present time, but will let you know as and when we have an update from the Local Authority. If possible our advice would be to make your own arrangements. It is crucial that the correct times are adhered to and that cars drop off at the designated car parking area.

What happens if my child is late?

Due to the staggered starts for each group. We will not be able to accommodate pupils who arrive at incorrect times.

Which other children will be in my child’s group?

Due to the restrictions of General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) we are unable to provide details of any children other than your own.

Will I be able to enter the school building to escort my child to their room?

No. Children should be dropped off at the allocated car parking area. There will be staff on hand to ensure that all pupils are welcomed and are guided to the correct entrance and classroom.

Can my child bring their own device?

Not at the moment. For the remainder of the school year all pupils attending the sessions will be provided with a sanitised Chromebook. We will be reviewing this prior to the next academic year.

What will happen following the first two weeks?

We’re sorry, but we are not in a position to be able to answer that at the moment, as we do not have enough information. We will need to see how the situation develops and will reassess at the end of the first week. We will get information out to parents as soon as we are able.

What about lunches for eFSM children?

We understand that the local authority will be providing suitable ingredients for packed lunches and will be delivering these to the home.

Can my child wear a face covering?

While the current guidance does not require the wearing of face coverings, we are more than happy for children, or staff, to wear face coverings should they feel more comfortable in doing so.

What happens if children fail to adhere to the rules?

Due to the seriousness of the situation, we will not be able to accommodate pupils who do not adhere to the guidance and rules that we set out.

Video Message Seven, June 12th 2020

Head Teacher     Mr J Kendall      jkendall@riscacom.net

In this week's video, the head teacher talks through the plans for the initial return to school. Alternatively, you can read the message below the video.

Any concerns can be addressed when you are contacted or, if urgent, you can email your child's Wellbeing Leader via the contact page. Please note we cannot respond to questions through social media.

I’d like to share with you where we are with our planning for a gradual reopening of school from 29th June. Your input through the survey and your comments have been invaluable in helping formulate these plans.

We are going to take a very cautious approach initially, as you have quite correctly requested. We are planning to offer each pupil who wishes to attend one full day during the first fortnight. This will be at a designated time with a staggered start, using a specific entrance, and with a group of pupils from the same year group no bigger than a maximum of twelve. Handwashing will be required on entry to the building and during the day. Physical distancing will be enforced at all times to conform to the current 2m rule. The group will remain in one large room throughout the day, though they will be allowed outside for break(s) organised by and escorted by their teacher. Hand sanitiser will be provided and trips to the toilet will respect privacy but will be escorted in just the same way as we do during exams. Pupils should bring in their own food  (which they will not be allowed to share); there will be no food available on site. They should also bring in pens and pencils. They will have access to a clean, sanitised chromebook for the day. Pupils will not be required to wear uniform. Staff will also be in informal clothes.

Each group will have four one hour  sessions, and they will have two teachers during the course of the day. The content of the sessions will include a check on personal wellbeing and a discussion about the home learning experience. There will be an opportunity to raise questions with the teachers about the work they have been doing. Should these be outside their own field of expertise, teachers will arrange for another member of staff to provide the information later via email if possible. There will be an opportunity for interaction between students, although only the students within their group at this stage, and teachers will engage in activities which will be interesting and where possible will not be IT based, as this has been the format of most learning outside school.

You will be contacted with the specific arrangements for your child(ren) over the next week or so, when any transport arrangements will also be discussed. Please note we will try to ensure groups are allocated to allow pupils to be with the most appropriate peers, but we cannot ‘mix and match’ as only this quite rigid approach will allow us to operate ‘track and trace’ procedures should anyone (staff or pupils) become symptomatic.

Some parents have specifically requested one to one support and we will do our best to accommodate this; this will be mentioned when we contact you, if relevant. Some parents have been using the Hub as a childcare facility and we will continue to honour that commitment. If you are in this category you must email hub@riscacom.net with your requirements for the month of July as soon as you can, writing “Childcare July” in the subject box and by 3pm on Monday 15th June at the very latest.

We will provide further information about the remainder of the term as soon as we can. Things can change quickly and we want and need to be flexible. We expect the minimum provision offer to be a repeat of the above arrangements,

Please note anybody showing symptoms of C-19 should not attend school, and anyone who develops these during the day will be isolated until they can be collected. Anyone who fails to conform to the physical distancing rules will be required to leave the site immediately. No-one should be on the site at a time which has not been agreed upon, and any infringement of this would be regarded as a very serious matter. Parents should only come on site to drop off and collect pupils as indicated, and should continue to contact us by email with any issues.

The first session will be on Tuesday 30th June as the school will be closed on Monday 29th for a deep clean following the decommissioning of the Childcare Hub.

The major part of learning, as I have said in previous posts, will still be delivered online. These catch up sessions will not replace that, but they will enhance it. There are six weeks of term still to go and plenty of learning still to  do!

We are looking forward to seeing our pupils again, in a safe, secure learning environment. Thank you for your support at this difficult time, I have been very encouraged by your messages and feedback. Our experience of running the hub has been very useful in formulating our plans

Video Message Five, May 15th 2020

Head Teacher     Mr J Kendall      jkendall@riscacom.net

15th May

Hello. Today’s message is mainly for our parents and carers though as soon as they hear that, I guess the pupils themselves might be interested in hearing it, too!

How are you? How’s it going? It’s not easy, is it? I know some of you are working from home and others are key workers and going out to work. I know some of you work in the NHS or in care. To you, on behalf of all of us at RCCS, I want to say thank you. When we clap on a Thursday night I’m thinking especially of you.

I imagine the big question you would ask me if we met would be about school reopening- when and how. The answer is that I know no more than you do. But I am certain of one thing: we will not return in any way, shape or form until it is safe to do so. I’m also pretty sure that we won’t be going back for a while yet and when we do it will be with very different arrangements. And that means that children will need to access their education from home for some time, and that includes after the school opens its doors to pupils again as it seems very unlikely we will be able to operate as we did before with the numbers we have. Attending school may need to be on a part time basis, At least initially.

So it is very clear to me that we need to get home learning as right as we can, and for that we need feedback from you. I’m asking you to complete a survey for us and  to provide any comments you feel would be useful. The fact you are reading this message suggest you are already engaging with the school, so I would ask you please to help me by trying to get your friends who are also parents at the school to get involved as well. I’d like to know how well you feel we are supporting you, what we could do or try to do to make things better, and I’d also like to know how you feel your child is doing. The link to the survey is at the top of this page, at the end of this message, and it will also be texted to you.

Of course we have had feedback already from staff and students, and many of you have been in touch, sometimes with a query but also to show your support for the school and the work we are doing as a Childcare Hub at the moment, which is appreciated.

What we know already is that this is really very difficult! Some of you have said you are overwhelmed with the work that’s been set, some contact us wanting more. Some of you say you are struggling to give the necessary time to home learning because of work commitments, some of you- and this includes me- struggle with dodgy internet, and some lack any decent IT resources. Some of you say you are enjoying it! In terms of engagement, there is also a huge variance. Some children would appear to have done very little at all, whilst others have really got the bit between their teeth and I have seen some amazing work.

I have always said what I want for your children is what I want for my own. One is at university and they are still taking exams (on line) so he is still studying hard. The other is in Y11 and I have encouraged him to start thinking about the courses he’ll be doing in the 6th Form, do a bit of research on line to keep up the learning habit. But there is no set work for Y11 at his school, nor is there at ours.

What would I be telling them if they were in Y7, 8, 9 or 10? I’d be explaining that the current situation is going to be going on for some time, and if they’re not making an effort to engage with work they are going to miss out later. I think it’s making the effort and trying to do a little every day that’s important, rather than becoming anxious about making a huge amount of progress. This will be tricky for many- though not all. I’d also be telling them to look after themselves properly, to exercise and eat sensibly. And I’d be ensuring they followed the Government guidelines, too, of course, on staying home.

You cannot be expected to teach your children, but of course you should encourage them, and perhaps now is the time to be a little more assertive- we’re in a long game. Fit work in at times that suit the family. Motivate the children with rewards. Remember too some of the other things they are learning- things we are all learning, in fact: patience; self-discipline; tolerance; appreciation.Value those.

When we set up the new website we felt communication was the key, so you have links to the email addresses of all relevant staff, and you should feel free to contact us if there are issues. I am lucky to lead a school with tremendous staff who are doing a great job both in our ‘virtual’ school and in the Hub.

Please click here to complete the survey.

Thanks for reading this, take care and stay safe.

7th May 2020

Bore da everybody! Following Mr Kendall's vlog and then Mr Oliver's last week, it's my turn this week to give you  an update on our virtual teaching and learning.

I want to start by thanking your teachers for the high-quality learning experiences they are providing for you during this pandemic. I've been so impressed with the wide range of tasks set, from GCSE style questions to how creative you can be with a toilet roll holder! I particularly loved the Minion ones. Work is being set regularly, mainly on Google classroom and we've made the most of the fantastic resources available on Hwb and BBC Bitesize both can be accessed through our virtual School website. This site will also enable us to keep you up to date with the most recent developments in teaching and learning.

Next I want to thank your parents and carers for stepping up to the challenge and encouraging you to continue with your learning as much as possible. We know it is not easy. Please be reassured that we appreciate all of your efforts and remember we are still here to help you too.

Last but not least I want to thank you - our pupils - for showing resilience by adapting and trying your best to continue to learn during the coronavirus crisis. We hope you are finding the work accessible, motivating and worthwhile. I know your teachers have been very pleased with some of the submissions they have received. For example the Year 7 ICT work on ‘Technology Ethics and Security’, Flipgrid clips that have been coming in for Welsh and I also got to view some hilarious tongue twisters from Drama. If you haven't engaged with the work yet I would urge you to do so. Don't worry about trying to complete it all, some is better than none and remember all of the life skills you can learn from home too. Try to set yourself a routine and commit to completing some school work every day. This way you will be developing good self-management skills and keeping up with your studies. Remember to be ‘Ready, Respectful and  Safe’ these simple rules still apply at home.

Tonight at 8 p.m. I will go out and clap for our carers, the nation has been doing this weekly to show their gratitude. However, tonight I will also be clapping  for our school community who are supporting each other, albeit from a distance, as we continue to stay home, stay safe and stay learning. Keep up the good work everyone!

Diolch yn fawr.

Video Message Three, May 1st 2020

Senior Assistant Headteacher     Mr J Oliver      joliver@riscacom.net

1st May 2020

Hello and welcome. Mr Kendall has asked me to do this week’s blog. My name is Mr Oliver, and for those of you who don’t know me, I am the senior assistant headteacher at Risca Community Comprehensive School and I am also the school’s lead on pupil wellbeing.

This is a difficult time for all of us and I want to assure the school community that we are doing all we can to support our pupils while we are unable to attend school in person.

We have put together the website for our new virtual school to help our pupils, and the wider community, by providing information on wellbeing, accessing and completing school work at home, the current situation with exams and qualifications, and transition arrangements; both from primary school to us and from us into college. As well as a range of other information, such as contact details for key members of the team.

We have an extensive team of staff currently working to support the wellbeing of our pupils and we have been contacting many of these by phone and by email to check on how they are doing and to see if there is anything that we can do to help. I know that the team has really enjoyed making contact and I have received many positive messages telling me how well our pupils are doing. I am really proud of the team effort that is being made in this area and am equally proud of how our pupils are responding to these unprecedented times.

Last week we sent out a wellbeing survey for our pupils to complete and have had responses from around a third of the school population. The survey has two aims; firstly, we want to collect as much information as we can, so that we can build a picture of our pupils’ experiences and respond where necessary. The second aim of the survey is to provide information that pupils may need and it does this by signposting pupils to relevant information based on their own individual answers. We are pleased with the number of pupils who have responded, but we would very much like to hear from everyone, so please take the time to complete it if you can. It only takes around two minutes and there is a link to the survey here.

While we remain in lockdown, I would strongly suggest that our pupils try to have a routine at home. There are lots of things that we can do to support our wellbeing and we should plan these to provide some structure to our days

Setting aside time each day for regular exercise really helps to maintain your mental, as well as physical, wellbeing. Current guidelines allow us to go outside for exercise once a day, as long as this is alone or with members of your household. Going for a walk, a bike ride or a run has many benefits and I’d really encourage you to do one of these each day.

Eating well and staying hydrated also helps to maintain your physical and mental health. It is very easy to fall into bad habits while stuck in the home, so thinking about and planning mealtimes can be a good way to avoid this. I know that Mrs Summers has added a recipe to the ‘Life in Lockdown’ page of the virtual school website, so why not give it a go.

It is also really important to keep your brain active while not in school. The teachers have set up Google Classrooms with plenty of work for you to get on with. We are recommending spending around three hours per day on school work and this is really important, not only for your mental health, but also to ensure that you don’t fall behind and continue to make progress with your learning. Mrs Madden, our lead on teaching and learning has provided lots of information, which again you can find on the website.

Be sure to take a look at the wellbeing page of the virtual school website. As I mentioned before it contains lots of useful information including the contact details of the wellbeing team, including our ALNCo, attendance officer and year heads, as well as a range of services that provide support. For the parents there is information on how to access free school meals. Both for those who usually receive them in school and for those whose situations may have changed, and may now qualify.

If you are a pupil, please make sure that you complete the survey and if you are a parent or carer, please pass this message on to your child.

Before I end I want to stress that the key message is that we are here to help. Please get in touch if you feel that you need to.

Stay safe everyone and I look forward to welcoming our pupils back to school as soon as it is safe to do so.

Shwmae!

We are now one week in to our virtual school! On Monday we launched this new website and we have had some great feedback. We made it using the sites app in the google suite and it was quite fun to do- maybe you could have a go, too, at making a site. I'd be interested to see what you could come up with on a theme of your choice and I'd especially like to see a site with information about staying safe during this current crisis.

On this website we have tried to provide the information you need in order for you to understand the approach we are taking and the expectations we have for your distance learning. Of course we may need to adapt things as we go along, but the message for the moment is.. so far so good. Lots of people have got stuck in to the work, and I've been really pleased that some teachers have already been sharing some of your work with me, and I look forward to seeing some more.

For the first part of the week I was at the school working in the Childcare Hub. It has been really good to meet new people from lots of different schools, and get to know some of the children too. The work people are doing there is amazing, and most importantly what we do is to allow essential workers to leave their children safely with us so they can get to work.

To end the week I've been working at home and had lots of meetings with colleagues on line which is a new experience but one I have enjoyed. We are all learning different ways of working, whether we are teachers or students.

Of course the thing most of us miss is the personal contact, particularly at a time when we need to be looking out for each other's wellbeing and getting feedback on how things are going. At the start of the week I put a short survey out to staff and I can report we are all ok!  We want to know how you are, too! Mr Oliver has put together a survey and I urge you to complete it please. It's especially set up so as to provide advice and guidance if there are any problems. You can access the survey here: https://forms.gle/L5XF4fnYYhfMa3Jb6 . Please note you will need to be logged in  your riscacom.net account to complete this. Thank you.

Meanwhile, as always, take care and stay safe everyone.

Bore da pawb!

I hope you and your family are well.

The summer term is now underway, but as I told you in my message on Friday, the school is still not open and I am not sure when it will be. We've set up this special website to help everyone through this unprecedented time, with a clear focus on your wellbeing and support for your learning

We started getting work ready for you four weeks ago both on line and in work packs, and and I know some of you have already made a start on this, which is great. Mrs Madden has provided guidance and expectations about this now the new term is underway, which you can find here and your class teachers will be looking at the work you submit. It is important you do what we ask of you because your learning matters.

Our Wellbeing Leaders- your Heads of Year- are working with your form teachers and others to make sure we look after this aspect as well. Mr Oliver is leading for us on this and you can find more information from him here .You’ll be able to share any worries you have, and get any help you need.

I know Y11 are anxious about GCSE exams and qualifications, and Y10 also have concerns. Mr Coombes is managing this for us. You’ll get regular updates here as we all find out more. Mrs Coles is working closely with Crosskeys College, other Sixth Forms, and Careers Wales to make sure you can start the next term where you need to be and doing the course(s) right for you. Mrs Coles is also working closely with Primary schools so our new pupils will be able to start with us well-prepared in September. More about that here.

I hope this website proves helpful to everyone. Take care and stay safe!

WEEKLY MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD No 18

10th February 2023

I can confirm that the teacher strike which had been scheduled to take place across Wales on Tuesday next week has been called off. School will now be open to all pupils as usual on that day.

Half term begins for pupils at the end of the day on Thursday 16th February, as Friday is a designated staff training day.  This marks the halfway point in the school year and the time has flown by. For me this is a reminder of my rapidly approaching retirement! For Y11 and their teachers it's a reminder of how near the exams are! I have been made aware of some useful wellbeing workshops being run over the week for young people and families. These are being held online and participation is free- you can find out more here.

On Monday morning most of our Y11 students visited Crosskeys College to have a good look around and explore the various options open to them. We have a very good working relationship with the college which is effectively our sixth form provision. They are able to provide a huge range of courses, which we would never be able to offer by ourselves.

There will be no update next Friday due to the half term break. Term will resume on Monday 27th February which will be a timetable week two. Can I remind you of two parents' evenings coming up next month? Y10 is on the 9th March and Y7 is on the 14th. Both are face to face meetings here at the school and you will receive notification and booking information in due course. One other key date is for Y11. This is the photo day which is on Friday 3rd March, so make sure you are looking good!  This is the first time in three years we have been able to do the traditional group photo. I am really pleased we can do this again, not least as for me it will the last one I will be in as head of our school.
